Cemetery Records of the
27th Iowa Infantry

This page has been compiled from many different sources. I
have searched cemetery listings and other sources online, and
information submitted by descendants (including biographies
and obituaries). I have taken a few of the tombstone photos
myself, but most have either been submitted or found online.
Many tombstone photos have been submitted by Steve Hanken, who is
working on a project of photographing and uploading Civil War
tombstone photos. Steve, thank you, so much, for your interest
in the 27th.
I would also like to thank Carole
and Chet McCaig, Find A Grave volunteers, who photographed all the
tombstones of the 27th Iowa in Memphis National Cemetery.
Thanks so much, Carole and Chet.
NOTE:
If I have a photo of the tombstone there is a tombstone Icon .
Click on the Icon to see the photo. The soldier's
name is linked to the Roster.
I obtained a lot of cemetery
locations from
Sons of Union
Veterans of the Civil War. Quite a few records from their
website only listed the cemetery and maybe the year of death.
After I got the cemetery location, I researched the soldier to
determine dates of birth and death, widow, tombstone photos, etc.
At first I was annotating that I got the other information
elsewhere, but I stopped doing that. Just be aware that the
information that I have posted here, may not necessarily match
the Sons of Union Veterans website (particularly with regard to date
of birth and death). Any notes that are added to a record are
done by me (Elaine Johnson - ejj) If I found discrepancies
between what I found on the Sons of Union Veterans website and other
sources, I noted it.
Please also note: If a
tombstone
picture was submitted to me, I may have a higher quality
picture. I normally crop and resize the photo for the website.
If you are interested in a particular cemetery photo, let me know
and I'll check to see what I have. (The email link is in the left
column).
I have tried to be very careful in compiling this page, but
unfortunately, I cannot verify every date. I have had to rely on the
information I have found. The information in ( ) is not
necessarily what is on the tombstone. It could be information
that has been compiled from other sources. Some of the dates (year of birth)
were computed using the age of the solider when he enlisted.
I have tried to note discrepancies that I found. I found
several references to soldiers that I do not find in the Rosters.
I have included them here and on the alphabetical roster, but not on
the actual rosters.
I am always interested in trying to obtain more tombstone photos.

I found this link
(
Iowa Civil War Monuments ) which has
photographs of Civil War Monuments in Iowa. I thought I would
link to it here.
Corrections and/or additions are
welcome.

date that I found on Find a Grave.- but I could also be
misinterpreting the 1914 date on the index. |

*Osage City Cemetery Records say Rice.
However, I (ejj) also found this information: "In the
Bice family history (book) it says that Leander was a a native of
New York. It also says that he and Sarah moved to Mitchell Co,
Iowa and appear to be on the Federal Census in 1880, 1900, and 1910.
In 1910 Leander is not listed so it is believed that he died between
1900-1910.
There's limited information on this family but it is said that the
only two children (George W. and Joseph F.) never married." |
