I found this note with a newspaper photo of his tombstone:  Civil War Veterans have their own little area in Brainard's Evergreen Cemetery.  Originally buried in the Old Crow Wing Cemetery, the bodies were exhumed in 1925 and moved to Evergreen by order of the War Department (Daily Dispatch Color Photo by Steve Kohls).

On Find A Grave, there is a Samuel G. Allen born June 14, 1840, died Aug. 11, 1864 that is buried in Stillwater Cemetery, Orchard, Mitchell County, Iowa. A note said he died during the Civil War.  I have requested a photo of his tombstone to see if it is the right one. (Note WPA Records and an online listing for Stillwater Cemetery list a Samuel S. Allen (1840 - Aug. 11, 1863, buried in Stillwater Cemetery, East Lincoln Township, Mitchell County.   I highly suspect that it is him.  His father, David Godfrey Allen (born 1801, died Aug. 14, 1875), is buried in the same cemetery.).  UPDATE: 5/17/2012:  The photo has been posted.  It clearly says Samuel S. Allen (Not G) and the date of death on the tombstone is Aug. 11, 1863, age 23 y, 1 mo. 28 d.  Unfortunately, it does not mention the 27th Iowa.  So while I am not 100% sure this is the right Samuel S. Allen, I am still pretty sure.  I am going to list it here.  Maybe I will be able to confirm 100% at some point.  I have requested a correction to his Find a Grave memorial. (middle initial and year of death).

(Note: this soldier was identified in the cemetery listing as being in  IA 27.  I do not find him on the roster - ejj.  However, there are several other men from Company B that are buried in the same cemetery.  (Andrew W. Hector/Hactor, Olaf G. Anderson and John A. Peterson).  None of them have the same date of birth and death, but all are Norwegian.  The biography of Olaf G. Anderson said he was the brother of Andrew Anderson.  I did find an Andrew Anderson that was in the 12th Iowa, but could not find an Andrew Anderson in the 27th Iowa. (Olaf G. Anderson did transfer to the 12th Iowa at the end of the war--maybe there was some discussion about the brothers serving in the same Regiment and someone assumed it was the 27th.).  I also found him on the 1895 Iowa State Census, age 68, in Allamakee County.  Normally the 1895 census shows Civil War service and which unit the soldier was in.  Andrew's information on this section was blank.

(* Note, there is a discrepancy in his date of death.  Family tree records and the WPA records show a year of death of 1939.  However, the Pension record index clearly shows that Juliette Stone Bender filed for a widow's pension on Sept. 23, 1929 -  I checked the 1930 Census Records: In Fayette County Juliette Bender, age 79, was listed as a widow).  UPDATE:  the photo of his tombstone has recently been added to Find a Grave.  The dates on the tombstone are: 1837 - 1929.

Note: his brother John Diederic Benjegerdes (born Aug. 30, 1839 - died Jan 9, 1917  Tjey are both apparently buried in Oakwood Cemetery in Cerro Gordo County, Iowa.  One of the the tombstone photos for John Frederick Benjegerdes on Find A Grave has the dates for his brother.  There is no way that is the tombstone for John Frederick.  I am assuming that the large tombstone is a family tombstone, so I have used that photo.  I have requested that the photos be updated

I requested a photo through Find a Grave.  This is the response I got:

"I searched the entire cemetery and could not find the grave.  Neither my friend or I could find Mr. Brownson in independent searches; we both found Martha -- no Mark."

I first found a reference to this cemetery:  Elmwood Cemetery, Carroll, Wayne County, Nebraska.  Lot S  (GAR Post 234 - Dept. of Nebraska) on the Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War Website.   But when I requested a photo through Find a Grave, I got a response that said "There are no "Bucks" buried in Elmwood Cemetery"  I went back to the Union Sons website and noted that it had marked "no stone or marker found"  So I did some additional research and I  found his obituary that said "His remains were taken to West Side, IA and buried beside those of his wife who died in 1889".  I then found a cemetery listing for Westside Cemetery which listed both William and Matilda Buck.  I have requested a photo.

I requested a photo through Find a Grave.  I got this response:  "Tried to get a photo of Thomas Bunce at Otterville Cemetery but couldn't find his tombstone. I think he is buried at one of the older worn away tombstones. I will try to find a plot book to see where he is buried."

Note: Roster says William C. Burnham.  Everything else I found said William H. Burnham.

(Oct. 2, 1802 - June 25, 1864 OR July 4, 1864) (note the discrepancy in the date of death.  The June 25, 1864 matches the Roll of Honor information.  Also see Jacob Neilson with almost identical dates.  It makes me wonder whether there was some connection between these two men's date of death - ejj) 

I requested a photo through Find a Grave.  This was the response: 

"All headstone have been photographed. The cemetery is large, full of brush and trees. No other headstone could be found. There is a possibility that a few in very thick brush could have been missed. This cemetery is no longer used or kept up".

Note: all online family trees list him as being buried in the above cemetery.  I was contacted by Joni Hindman, a descendant through his daughter Catherine.  She said she has a letter in her possession written by 27th Iowa Chaplin D. N. Bordwell that says "he was buried "just beside the rail road about three quarters of a mile north of the Tallahatchie river...."  I can see several possibilities: (1) The one in Linn County is a memorial.  (2) He was moved after the war was over (3), the one in Linn County is mistake because that is where his wife was buried.  There may be another explanation, but those are the ones that come to my mind."

This is also on Find A grave.  The source is Iowa Civil War Soldier Burial Records.  However, I am fairly sure this is an error.  There is no Lynet Green in Company A.  There is a Lucius L. Green.  He filed for a pension on April 21, 1880 and per the US Civil War Soldiers Records died Feb.. 10, 1905.  There is a death record for Lucius L. Green with that date in St. Croix County, Wisconsin.  I have not been able to determine where he is buried.  I have listed this here just in case.  The tombstone photo was no help.  I did question the Find a Grave volunteer that took the photo.  She said the tombstone says: Lyman Green, born Mar. 6, 1823, died May 12, 1899"

Note: The roster says he was buried at Corinth National Cemetery.  But both  Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War and  Clayton County Cemetery Records say he is buried at Monona City Cemetery, Clayton County, Iowa.  I have photos from both cemeteries.  The first  photo is at Corinth National Cemetery and was found on Find a Grave. .  Sharyl Ferrall photographed the tombstone at Monona City Cemetery.  Either one of them is a memorial stone, or he was moved at some point.

I found a source that said he was buried in St. Paul's Lutheran Church Cemetery.  However Per Sharyl Ferrall  the cemetery  it is located behind the Lutheran church, but the cemetery predates the church, and is not affiliated with the church.

Cemetery office has no record of this person. 

They also reported, specifically:  I have Riverside Cemetery Listing for Charles City and they do not have an Alexander Jones as buried here.  But the Riverside Cemetery in Rockford has a listing for A. J. Jones, born 1813 and died 1900.

Are you sure he is buried here? The local library has a paper that documents all the Civil War burials in Floyd county by cemetery as of 1963. I checked in it and found 16 burials listed for Co. G, 27th IA Infantry but there was no Alexander Jones listed. I have also walked the area he is listed as being buried in but as yet have found no stone. It may be possible that his grave is unmarked.

The dates for the other A. J. Jones do not match the information I found for him.  I have sent a message to the person that created the memorial to see if he knows what source he used for the memorial.

NOTE: Iowa Civil War Soldier Burial Records has him listed as buried in Plainfield, Bremer County, Iowa.  WPA Records show him buried in Willow Lawn Cemetery, Polk Twp., Bremer County, Iowa with notes:  "Civil War Vet C. E 27th IA Inf."  But there is a note attached to the record from Mike Peterson that states: Freedom Jones who was a Civil War Vet in Co. E 27th IA Inf; b. in Chautauqua Co, NY 7 Apr 1822 and died in Guthrie, Logan County, OK on 20 Feb 1899 is buried in Summit View Cemetery, Guthrie - not here. I have pictures of headstones. Don't know why he is listed here although he lived here at one time. Another Freedom buried Giard Cemetery, Farmersburg, Clayton Co but unlikely both in same CW Co

Note there is another James McClintock listed as being buried at Rossville Cemetery with a date of death of July 25, 1865.  He is identified as being with the 27th.  However, pension and census records prove that the James McClintock that died in 1925, is the one that served with the 27th.

There is a conflict with his date of birth.  His Obituary says Nov 3.  Cemetery records say Nov. 31.

His name is spelled "Merriam" on his tombstone.

Minger, Rudolph  - Co. D - Guttenberg City Cemetery, Lot 348, Guttenberg, Clayton County, Iowa.

Catherine G. Mitchell (died Apr. 19, 1891) is buried in the same cemetery.  Is this his wife?  She is buried in Range 3, Section 9, Row 3, Space 6.  Possibly he is buried near her?

His name is spelled Moench on Find a Grave. (Monch on the tombstone but his memorial is connected to others with the spelling "Moench".

The only one I could find that served in the Civil War was a Nicholas Munshower that served with Co E, 3rd Regiment California.  There was a single man named Nicholas Monshower on the 1880 Census in Jefferson Allamakee County, Iowa.  He was born about 1820 in Pennsylvania.  It is probably him, but I can find no connection to the 27th Iowa.  I have requested a photo of his tombstone to see if it shows anything.

Note:  I also found information indicating that he was buried at Oran Cemetery,  Oran, Fayette County, Iowa, Lot 41. Additional notes said that on the same lot was son Walter S. Jr. Died Jan 12, 1888 at Hanover SD, perished in a storm.  I found tombstone photos for both locations.  Possibly one of the sites is a memorial site.

Note:  The WPA  1930's Grave Registration says: Paxon, Sam L. E. and says GAR member Post Lamont.   The notation of being a GAR member is a little suspect to me.  I'm not sure the GAR existed in 1862.  Maybe the GAR was responsible for getting the headstone.

Note:  I found 3 different dates of death.  The Pension Index Record says August 24, 1920.    Online Family Trees say July 26, 1920.  Buchanan County Burial Records and Find a Grave say June 26, 1920 (BUT the tombstone shows July 26, 1920)  I am using the July 26 date because of the tombstone..

Potter, 29th Iowa).

Woodmansee Notes:  The Armed Forces Grave Registration records for him show that he is buried in Corinth National Cemetery, Corinth, Alcorn Co., Mississippi.  The text states "enl 11 Aug 1862 age 19 res Lansing [Iowa] died disease and originally buried at Jackson TN; memorial marker for this soldier at Oakland Cem in Allamakee Co IA."

Reed, Perry  - Co. B - Cave Hill National Cemetery, Louisville, Ky.  Section C., range 2, grave 97.

Note his name is spelled Rinehart on the tombstone (and Find a Grave).

Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War  has date of death: Jan 14, 1883.  However his widow filed for a pension on July 17, 1882, so the 1882 date of death is probably correct.

I requested a photo from Find a Grave.  I got the following response:

Cemetery office has no record of this person.  I spoke with the office of the National Cemetery and they confirmed that John Robbins, d. 1864, is NOT at the Rock Island National Cemetery or the Confederate Cemetery.

Since the information came from  the roster, I will leave this here -- but there is the possibility he is not buried in this cemetery.  For some reason I have not noticed this before --  But the roster also says he died at Davenport, Iowa.  WHY would he have been buried at Rock Island Cemetery??

(Note date of birth was based on pension statement that he was 73 years, 8 months and 18 days at date of death).

Find a Grave Volunteers have been denied permission to photograph tombstones in this cemetery.  Only Direct Descendents can obtain photographs of graves there.

Note on Find A Grave, the name is spelled Schamacher.  The grave number does not match, but the date of death does.  Per Karen, the Find a Grave volunteer, the grave site location mentioned on the roster does not exist.  He buried in Plot 34 0 3368.   I am pretty sure this is the same person.  His mother Mary Schumaker filed for a pension.

There is a discrepancy in the date of death.  Tombstone shows the date above.  Headstones Provided for Deceased Union Civil War Veterans says: John R. Smith, Private, Co. F, 27th Reg. Iowa Infantry.  Date of Death Nov. 14, 1894, Cemetery: Osborne Cemetery, Osborne, Osborne County, Kansas.

The Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War has both cemeteries listed  (NOTE:  The photo is from the cemetery in LaCrosse, WI.  The second one could be an error OR a clue, so I will include it.)

Find a Grave has an Emil Stenger listed with the DOB 1816 and DOD Jan. 1, 1866.  Per the Roster, Emil Stangier of Company B, should have been born about 1828.  So I am not sure this is him, in spite of what the Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War has.

His widow Fredericka Stangier filed for a pension on July 19, 1886 in Illinois.  So even though the age appears to be off to me, I suppose this could be him.  I have listed it just in case.

I requested a photo through Find a Grave.  This was the response:  "I searched the entire cemetery and could not find the grave.  Historian gave me plot as 50-1.  However, there are no diagrams noting where this is in the cemetery.  Found Maytha Stewart, and focused near there, without luck.  High temps kept me to only 30 minute search.

He does not have a stone, but the director of Lockeford Historical Society/Harmony Grove Cemetery is working on getting him a VA stone.

Note: Find a Grave has a tombstone photo for him that says "Unknown U.S. Soldier".  I don't know if that his actual tombstone, or just a marker.

I, 27th Iowa. --I am not concerned about the name difference because family and census records show his name as Alfred Alpheus Tannehill)

It appears that they have his date of death wrong in the Jefferson Barracks Cemetery Records.

The reported date of death is probably incorrect.  See notes with the photo regarding his date of death.

NOTE: Everything that I had previously found said he died Dec. 5, 1882 and was buried in Oak Grove Cemetery, Mitchell County, Iowa.   Find a Grave, Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War and the Mitchell County USGENWEB Cemetery listing for Oak Grove Cemetery all show this information.  However, I believe that is an error.  They are showing the identical birth and death dates for both him and his first wife Almira Tucker (born May 6, 1830 and died Dec. 5, 1882).  I believe the dates are for his wife only.

By researching the Pension Index Records, 1890 Veterans Census, and Death Records and Cemetery Records for Hubbard County, Minnesota, I believe that I have determined that the information listed above for Hubbard County, Minnesota is correct.

Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War has the cemetery as Farmersburg Cemetery, Farmersburg, Clayton County, Iowa

(NOTE:  The Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War have a date of death of Nov. 13, 1897.  The Hall County, Nebraska website has a date of Jan 1, 1897.  His Widow Scharlotte (Charlotte) filed for a pension on December 16, 1897, so either of the dates could be correct.  I have no way of determining which one is right.

(NOTE:  His tombstone shows Vietor).

(Note: he is not buried at the Rowley Cemetery. There is, however, a stone with his name on it and a GAR marker beside it. He died of illness and was buried in a mass grave.)

Note: this source says he is buried in Prairie du Chien, WI.  Prairie Du Chien Cemetery is AKA Evergreen Cemetery.  It makes sense to me that he would be buried in Allamakee County.  His family was  there. 

Note:  Find a Grave has him identified as Isaac Williams, as does a memorial stone for Civil War Vets.  However their cemetery records say:  Isaiah Williams Lot 47, space 3, South Division,  death date recorded only as 1900.  Pamela, space 2, death date, 3/11/1890.   A note in the record states - marker- I.W.  (Update, I requested a correction.  It has been updated to Isaiah "Isaac" Williams.)

Note: the Union County USGENWEB site has a listing of veterans buried in Union County.  The list shows  T. E. Young, Co. G. 27th Iowa Inf. buried in Corning Cemetery, Union County, Iowa.  Find a Grave has the cemetery listed as "Walnut Grove, Corning, Adams County, Iowa"  Union and Adams county are neighbors, so more than likely it is the same cemetery.
