I recently went to the Little Rock National Cemetery in Little Rock Arkansas and took pictures of the tombstones of the men of the 27th that were buried there.  The tombstone for Warren Baird has the unit as the 29th Iowa.  I decided to do some research to be sure I had the correct Warren Baird.  The research that I did indicates to me that this is the correct Warren Baird, so the tombstone has to be incorrect.  I could not find a Warren Baird with the 29th Iowa.

  1. The Roster for the 27th Iowa states that he died November 13, 1863.

  2. Notes from Ancestry.com regarding his burial information:

Rank:

Private

Unit:

IA 27 Inf A

Birth Information:

OH

Death Information:

18 Jul 1864 Little Rock AR

Cemetery:

Little Rock National

Cemetery Location:

Little Rock Pulaski AR

Comments:

enl 14 Aug 1862 age 34; died in Little Rock AR; cem record indicates d 18 Jul 1864; Roster & Record indicates died 13 Nov 1863; it is possible that the date from the cemetery is a burial date

  1. The Roll of Honor says that he died November 13, 1863 and that he is buried at the Little Rock National Cemetery.

  2. The Index of the Little Rock National Cemetery only lists one Warren Baird (who died November 13, 1863.)

  3. I then found his pension records which show that his wife (widow) was Martha:

  1. Next I found a family tree showing Warren Baird, son of Josiah Baird and Sarah Ryland was born in 1828 in Ohio.  (The roster states that he was born in Ohio)  He had siblings:  Alfred, Christina, Abigail and Alexander.  He is listed on the 1850 Census of Orange, Ashland County, Ohio as being age 22, and a school teacher.

  1. The family tree states that he married Martha Scoby January 13, 1853 in Ashland Co., Ohio.

Children of Warren Baird and Martha Scoby:

  1. Justin Baird, born about 1856 in Iowa

  2. Edson E. Baird, born July 25, 1857 in Allamakee County, Iowa.

Notes: from a query by Bob Banks on Genforum (Bob Banks had previously submitted a picture of Warren Baird to the 27th Iowa Website, so I am certain this is the same family).

Edson Baird was born July 25, 1857 in Allamakee County, Iowa, the second child of Warren Baird and Martha Scoby. He had an older brother Justin and younger sisters Sarah Jane and Margaret Chastina.  Sarah Jane died as a teenager.  Margaret Chastina married William Abel Banks in Missouri in 1884.

Edson's wife was named Mary.  Edson & Mary Baird bought a farm in Barry County, Missouri, in March 1883 and sold it in November 1898. Thereafter they moved to California, where they apparently lived in the Fresno area.

Edson & Mary had at least one son Bert, who lived in the Sanger area and whose wife was Emma. Their oldest son was Wayne, who may have been a lawyer in the Long Beach area after WW II.

  1. Sarah Jane, born about 1859 in Allamakee County, Iowa

  2. Margaret Chastina born October 28, 1862 in Allamakee County, Iowa.
