Information researched by Elaine Johnson using information found on the internet at Ancestry.com and other sources. All sources should be checked as I have no personal knowledge of this soldier. All information was gathered from the internet and may contain errors.

Note: I only found one scrap of evidence that this is the same Newell Helms that served in Company G of the 27th Iowa, and that was information about his burial that said he was in Company G, 27th Iowa.

However, I am certain that this is correct information. There was only one Newell Helms listed in the Iowa census. He was the right age, born in New York and from Nashua, Chickasaw County, Iowa.

His mother Phoebe Wait was a sister to Polly Wait. Polly Wait was married to John Scott Hall and was the mother of three other men that served in Company G: Dyer Hall, Enoch Hall and Giles Hall. Newell Helms would be their first cousin.
