Can You Identify
This Keokuk Site and These Men?

This scene is thought to be a Restaurant somewhere in the Keokuk, IA area prior to 1905. Some of the canned goods on the shelf carry a label called "Gate City". The man standing to the left is my grandfather, Newton V. Lowe. Can anyone identify the other two individuals, the place and time?

Update: A granddaughter of one of the owners of this restaurant has identified this as the Stanton Bros. Restaurant which was located at 28 S. Water St., Keokuk. From city directory info, it appears to have operated in this location from about 1900-1908. Her grandfather, James D. Stanton is the gentleman with the mustache on the right. The location may have been the site of the Power View Hotel.

Granddad also was a cook on the railroad for a time. A railroad related photo can be found here.

My grandfather was also thought to have been a semi-pro baseball player. It is well known the Keokuk has historically been a "baseball town". Click here for a photo of my grandfather years later as part of a baseball team in Farmington, IA.
