Was said to have come to Iowa as a semi-pro barn-storming baseball player. Marriage article. in Boss Entler scrapbook confirms he came to Bonaparte (likely in early 1905) to play baseball for the Bonaparte Indians. Was a cook at times and painter/wallpaper hanger. Thought to have been a paid mercenary in Boer War in Africa but listed as in Spanish American War per 1925 Census.
Frequently reported that he was "from Lafayette, IN". The Marriage License application of Newton Lowe and Carrie Rockefellow states that Newton's parents were J.A. Lowe and Sarah Johnson and that his place of birth was Buffalo, N.Y.

Early in 1898 he went to Nebraska to work on the ranch of his Uncle (Mike Simmons and Leslie's sister Della) near Wilsonville. ( Apr-1902 Bonaparte Bee newpaper listed Leslie Johnson as having played 3rd base for the Bonaparte Indians in 1901.) The next 20 years he spent in Nebraska mostly near Callaway. In 1902 he married Mae Lindsay of that place. In 1916 the family moved from Lodi, NB to Iowa.-Leslie B Johnson Obit.
