The following year he accompanied his son William J. to what is now Van Buren Co., IA. - 1890 Biographical Album of Jefferson and Van Buren Co's. IA. 1832 Register of Pioneer Settlers, Van Buren Co. lists settlement in Van Buren Co. as 1837.

He also worked on Canal in Miami River at Dayton, Ohio, but was a cooper by trade. He was a German. According to Van Cleff book, his father Benjamin settled in Stampers Creek Twp., Orange Co., IN in 1813. Father had previously been listed in Shelby Co. KY 1810 census. John had 3 sons and 7 daughters by marriage to Sarah Dunn per p. 103 of Van Cleef book. Moved to Iowa near Bonaparte in 1866 per Van Cleef typed notes. Clara was the only child married at the time and followed shortly. Had two daughters who married Hutchinsons.
Van Cleef book states birthdate as Dec. 1810 but also states age as 38 in 1850 Orange Co. IN Census. 1860 Pulaski Co. IN Census shows age as 48. 1870 Van Buren Co. IA census shows age as 58 so 1810 is not likely correct.
Page 596 of "Counties of White and Pulaski Counties" (published in 1883) the following: Van Buren Township: Churches.-The Presbyterian Church in the northeast corner was built about 1852, but several years before a class had been formed a few of the members living in southern Harrison Township. Among those prominently connected with the class were John Humes and family, James Vanmeter and family, Ephraim Smith and family, John Van Cleve and family, John Wirley and family, James Humes and family, Fred Huffman and family, Jacob Graffis, Mrs. Sarah Barnet and others. The building is a frame structure, about 30 x 40 feet and cost $800. Rev. Bell was one of the first ministers. The class did good work until the last war, when trouble arose over political affairs, and the members disbanded and the church stood silent and deserted until purchased at auction by Mr. Enyart. It is now used to hold funerals in, and is convenient as it stands by a cemetery where sleep the departed of the neighborhood. A Sunday school was conducted a number of years at the head of which were James Vanmeter and Daniel Smith. Revs. Robert Irvin and David Williamson served the class for a few years each.
