[my direct line in blue] Stephen Hopkins, a non-Separatist and businessman from Gloucestershire, arrived with his family on the Mayflower. He is the only one among the Plymouth settlers who had been to America before (in Virginia, 1609). He is now a New England resident with his wife Elizabeth and their family. Their son, Oceanus, was born on the Mayflower during the crossing from England, but died within the first few years after their arrival.
Stephen Hopkins is most likely the Stephen, son of Stephen and Agnes Hopkins who was born in Wortley, Gloucestershire October 29, 1581. He married twice, first to a woman who may have been named Constance, and second in London to Elizabeth Fisher, February 19, 1617/8. Besides the three children who accompanied him on the passage, and the son born at sea, he had five additional children. He was one of the few Mayflower passengers to remain in the town of Plymouth, serving as Assistant Governor and dying there in 1644. Elizabeth (Fisher) Hopkins married Stephen Hopkins as his second wife February 19, 1617/8. Elizabeth gave birth to Oceanus during the voyage of the Mayflower. She likely died before June 6, 1644, as she is not mentioned in her husband's will written on that date. She gave birth during the Mayflower voyage to a son, Oceanus. He died young, sometime before 1627.
