Lineage
WALTER LIPPINCOTT, Publisher, received his early education at the Thomas Baldwin Academy,
Philadelphia; entered
the University of Pennsylvania, class of 1868; left in Sophomore year to travel in Europe
a year. On his return in the fall of
1866 entered his father's publishing and bookselling house, J. B. Lippincott &
Company, of Philadelphia; became parter in
1868 when only twenty years of age; was very active in the business, so much so that his
health broke down in 1881 and he
withdrew from active work. When the partnership was changed to an incorporated company in
1885, he became a Director
and continues that relation. Is Deputy Governor of the Penn's branch of the Society of
Mayflower Descendants, and is Vice
Commodore of Corinthian Yacht Club of Philadelphia; has declined a number of offers of
directorships, etc., on account of
his health.

RICHARD LIPPINCOTT, of Shrewsbury, New Jersey; d. 25th November, 1683; came to America from
Stonehouse,
Devonshire, England, 1639, and settled at Boston, where he was made Freeman 13th May,
1640; resided at Dorchester,
1641-1644; he remained there but a few years and removed to Boston in 1644. Owing [p.366]
to disagreements with
members of the church at Boston, involving conscientious scruples he separated from its
communion 6th July, 1651, and
returned in 1652 to Plymouth, England, where more liberty of conscience was encouraged by
CROMWELL. Resided at
Stonehouse for some years. He suffered imprisonment with other Quakers 1655 and 1660, and
in 1663 left England with
his young wife, Abigail, and came to Rhode Island. About 1665 he removed to Shrewsbury,
New Jersey, being a member
of the first English Colony there, the largest landed proprietor; also purchased 1000
acres in Fenwicke Colony, in Salem
County, New Jersey; was Deputy for the patentees, 1669; Overseer of the town, 1669-1670;
established the first Friends
Meeting in New Jersey; was one of the Patentees named in the Charter of Shrewsbury 30th
May, 1669. His wife Abigail, d.
20th August, 1697, having previous to her death liberated all her slaves.

JOSHUA BALLINGER LIPPINCOTT, Publisher, of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania; b.
18th March, 1813, in Juliustown, New Jersey; d. 5th January, 1886. In 1824 went to
Philadelphia and was employed in Clark's Book Store; was made manager [p.368] of the
business by the assignees when 18 years of age, and in 1836 bought out the business, which
became the foundation of the publishing house of J. B.
Lippincott & Company, one of the principal houses of the
kind in the United States. He was very successful and in 1849 bought out Grigg, Elliot
& Company's stock, then the largest book jobbing house in the United States, forming
the firm of Lippincott, Grambo & Company, which was dissolved in 1855, and the name of
J. B. Lippincott & Company resumed. Under his able management the success of the house
continued, passing through the financial crisis of 1857 and 1861 unscathed. In 1868,
Lippincott's Magazine
was established and has been published uninterruptedly ever since. Among the great works
published by this house are Lippincott's Gazetteer of the World, Lippincott's Biographical Dictionary,
Allibone's Dictionary of Authors, the American edition of Chambers
Encyclopaedia, United States Dispensatory, Prescott's Complete
Works, Worcester's Dictionaries, and many important works in every
branch of literature. He was a Director at the time of his death in Philadelphia and
Reading Railroad, Farmer's and Mechanics Bank, Philadelphia Savings Fund, Pennsylvania
Company for Insurance on Lives and
Granting Annuities, and Trustee of the University of Pennsylvania; was a member of the
Philadelphia, Union League, and Rittenhouse Clubs; m. 16th October, 1845,
