"Hopkins, Lambert. He was born in April 1736; died 9  August 1818; and may
have been the son of William and Rebecca Harwood Hopkins of Talbot, members
of Thirdhaven Meeting. William Hopkins died in 1758/9 leaving his widow
"burdened with children" and Friends settled the orphansin orhter homes
(Minutes Thirdhaven Meeting). Unfortunately the siblings have never been
identified.

Lambert, having a birthright among Friends, became acquainted early in life
with Joseph Nichols, founder of the Nicholites, a religious sect with
several
meeting houses in Caroline County and Kent County, Delaware. In 1761 he was
disowned by the Meeting for marrying outside of the order.  His wife was
Mary
Johnson, daughter of James and  Ann Richards Johnson; granddaughter of Col.
James and Margaret  Skinner Johnson. Mary Hopkins was deceased by 1769;
Lambert, a shoemaker, purchased of Solomon Jones, a TAVERNKEEPER, 2 3/4
acres
ofland near Talbot Courthouse called "Solomon's Beginning (19:417)." On 10
March 1769 Lambert Hopkins and Elizabeth his wife, sold 1/4 acre of
"Solomon's
Beginning" to Solomon Hopkins, Joyner, and 2 1/2 acres to REv. John Barclay
(19:19, 30).  Then Lambert and Elizabeth dropped from sight only to
reappear
on the 1783 Assessment List of  Bay and Mill Hundred with a family of seven
and no land.

18 January 1785 Thomas Wickersham sold Lambert Hopkins one-quarter of an
acre
of land adjoining the lot of Uriah Yarnall-part of "Londonderry (22:113).  5
October 1785 Lambert purchased of Richard Bruff and Deborah his wife, a lot
adjoining the courthouse land (23:75). A license had been issued to him on 6
June to keep a TAVERN in his house near the courthouse; and renewed a year
later.  The records for the years following do not disclose how long he
remained in business.

Lambert Hopkins died in 1818, his will (JP 7:428) devised a leasehold lot
at
Easton Point (or Cow Landing) to his son John and a farm purchased of James
Seth near the Miles River Ferry to his son Lambert (Jr.).  Both sons
directed
to relinquish within one month all claim to their father's  personal estate.
In consideration of his wife Elizabeth's future maintenance, he gave her the
Bruff lot for life or widowhood, the rents from the shop tenanted by Henry
Willis; two cows and a calf and all of the poultry on the dwelling
plantation;
five hogs in the sty; all of the household and kitchen furniture and the
carriage.  After her death the Bruff property was to be divided among her
six
children.

Lambert Hopkins, Jr. married (1) Nancy Murphy, daughter of William Muphy, a
Talbot farmer, 5 November 1808; (2) her sister Sarah, 3 June 1816. One of
their daughters, Anne Hopkins, married James Kinnamon and from this union
descends a family well represented in this county today.

John Hopkins (of Lambert) was married by 1818 to a lady named "Ann," who may
have been a "Pastorfield," "Sears," or both!

Robert Harwood Hopkins (of Lambert) married Susannah Rumball, 31 March 1796.

Solomon Hopkins (of Lambert) married Matilda Emerson (John Meconikin's Will,
Queen Anne County 1799).

Mary Hopkins (of Lambert) married (1) William Dobson; (2) Peter Barwick, 3
May
1813.

Sarah Hopkins (of Lambert) married (1) Bryan Hooper, 9 June 1805; (2) by
1819,
to (?) Thompson.

Elizabeth Hopkins (of Lambert) married John Vickers, Jr., 15 August 1815;
she
was widowed in 1817.  5 July 1821, james McDonough and Elizabeth his wife,
sold her share of the Wichersham lot to Joseph Huzza, who had purchased the
rights of the other hiers.

Nancy Hopkins (of Lambert) married William Barrott, a Queen Anne County
farmer."
