General Land Index, Talbot County, MD, 1662-1799

Abstracts of deeds involving individuals surnamed HOPKINS

by Harold C. Hopkins, 12 July 1994 hhopkins@jps.net

The following index list of Hopkins individuals who were principals in early land transactions in Talbot County, MD, has been abstracted from the above-titled book in our study to try to determine the origins of our ancestors who were in Orange County, NC, when that county was formed in 1752, and later in other counties and states. Some events and relationships shown in my earlier abstract of Hopkins wills and certain other probate matters for all the counties in Maryland during a similar period (1663-1778) can be corelated to some of the names in the enclosed list. I and others believe that the striking duplication of so many given names of the Talbot County MD and Orange/Randolph County NC families suggests that they are closely related. This and other studies of Maryland before 1800 are intended to elicit and examine any evidence that may clearly document and establish such a linkage.

The deeds corresponding to the indexed names and events are on file in the original Deed Books at the Talbot Courthouse in Easton, MD. They can be studied in the file room, but copying must be done by the County Clerk of the court at $0.50 per page. I havenÆt yet looked at these deeds but assume theyÆll run two to three pages each. Because this list includes about 200 transactions (there are some duplications) I would guess that getting copies of all would cost $200 or more. As to determining relationships among the principals and furthering our objectives, some deeds obviously would be more important to us than others, but itÆs difficult to tell which ones without examining all.

I can spend a limited amount of time looking at some of these deeds, but a complete and comprehensive study would take considerable time. and IÆd be afraid that doing it on the hoof or hurrying it in any way would result in overlooking something that might be important. I hope to return to Easton, the Talbot County seat, and look at some of them, but the round trip drive of 180 miles from my home in Gaithersburg, MD, takes about 1 1/2 hours each way, and this cuts into the total hours I can spend in the file room. I hope the Deed Book room is not like the Index room, where I had to stand for the entire time I was working because there were no chairs in the room. I also hope to look at other records in Talbot and other Maryland counties whenever I have the opportunity. Some of these are available in Annapolis, which is about an hourÆs drive one-way from where I live..

In the enclosed list, the column at left refers to the page number of the index book. The entries separating the names are ôtoö or ôfrom.ö The two numbers in the right columns refer to the Deed Book number and page number. If any of you wish, you may be able to order copies of the documents from the County Court Clerk, but I havenÆt asked them the additional charges for handling correspondence, xeroxing, and mailing.

The phrase ôet virö presumably means ôand husband.ö My own abbreviations in the 3rd column from right: POA means power of attorney, COV means certificate of valuation, rcpt means receipt, BOS means bill of sale, agrmt means agreement, BL means boundary line, BA means boundary agreement, WTB means witness to boundary, mtge means mortgage, estray presumably refers to a lost animal, AOL means assignment of lease, depos means deposition, apprs means apraisement, and prtn is my abbreviation for partrition, which the scribe probably meant as partition, as in dividing up land.

"Hopkins, Lambert. He was born in April 1736; died 9  August 1818; and may
have been the son of William and Rebecca Harwood Hopkins of Talbot, members
of Thirdhaven Meeting. William Hopkins died in 1758/9 leaving his widow
"burdened with children" and Friends settled the orphansin orhter homes
(Minutes Thirdhaven Meeting). Unfortunately the siblings have never been
identified.

Lambert, having a birthright among Friends, became acquainted early in life
with Joseph Nichols, founder of the Nicholites, a religious sect with
several
meeting houses in Caroline County and Kent County, Delaware. In 1761 he was
disowned by the Meeting for marrying outside of the order.  His wife was
Mary
Johnson, daughter of James and  Ann Richards Johnson; granddaughter of Col.
James and Margaret  Skinner Johnson. Mary Hopkins was deceased by 1769;
Lambert, a shoemaker, purchased of Solomon Jones, a TAVERNKEEPER, 2 3/4
acres
ofland near Talbot Courthouse called "Solomon's Beginning (19:417)." On 10
March 1769 Lambert Hopkins and Elizabeth his wife, sold 1/4 acre of
"Solomon's
Beginning" to Solomon Hopkins, Joyner, and 2 1/2 acres to REv. John Barclay
(19:19, 30).  Then Lambert and Elizabeth dropped from sight only to
reappear
on the 1783 Assessment List of  Bay and Mill Hundred with a family of seven
and no land.

18 January 1785 Thomas Wickersham sold Lambert Hopkins one-quarter of an
acre
of land adjoining the lot of Uriah Yarnall-part of "Londonderry (22:113).  5
October 1785 Lambert purchased of Richard Bruff and Deborah his wife, a lot
adjoining the courthouse land (23:75). A license had been issued to him on 6
June to keep a TAVERN in his house near the courthouse; and renewed a year
later.  The records for the years following do not disclose how long he
remained in business.

Lambert Hopkins died in 1818, his will (JP 7:428) devised a leasehold lot
at
Easton Point (or Cow Landing) to his son John and a farm purchased of James
Seth near the Miles River Ferry to his son Lambert (Jr.).  Both sons
directed
to relinquish within one month all claim to their father's  personal estate.
In consideration of his wife Elizabeth's future maintenance, he gave her the
Bruff lot for life or widowhood, the rents from the shop tenanted by Henry
Willis; two cows and a calf and all of the poultry on the dwelling
plantation;
five hogs in the sty; all of the household and kitchen furniture and the
carriage.  After her death the Bruff property was to be divided among her
six
children.

Lambert Hopkins, Jr. married (1) Nancy Murphy, daughter of William Muphy, a
Talbot farmer, 5 November 1808; (2) her sister Sarah, 3 June 1816. One of
their daughters, Anne Hopkins, married James Kinnamon and from this union
descends a family well represented in this county today.

John Hopkins (of Lambert) was married by 1818 to a lady named "Ann," who may
have been a "Pastorfield," "Sears," or both!

Robert Harwood Hopkins (of Lambert) married Susannah Rumball, 31 March 1796.

Solomon Hopkins (of Lambert) married Matilda Emerson (John Meconikin's Will,
Queen Anne County 1799).

Mary Hopkins (of Lambert) married (1) William Dobson; (2) Peter Barwick, 3
May
1813.

Sarah Hopkins (of Lambert) married (1) Bryan Hooper, 9 June 1805; (2) by
1819,
to (?) Thompson.

Elizabeth Hopkins (of Lambert) married John Vickers, Jr., 15 August 1815;
she
was widowed in 1817.  5 July 1821, james McDonough and Elizabeth his wife,
sold her share of the Wichersham lot to Joseph Huzza, who had purchased the
rights of the other hiers.

Nancy Hopkins (of Lambert) married William Barrott, a Queen Anne County
farmer."

Hi Adrianne,

I am a newly addicted genealogy buff who is trying to fill in the blanks on my family tree.  I got excited when you referred to "so many Hopkins relatives" in you rootsweb e-mail to everyone.  I am tracing the route of Thomas Hopkins, a quaker who moved his family from Talbot County, Md. to Wilmington De. in 1845, and then subsequently onto Philadelphia.  His son William T. Hopkins
opened two bustle and hoopskirt shops there, which I believe he then passed along to his son Edward T. Hopkins, who is my great-grandfather.  Do you recognize this line in your file of names?  If so I am interested in gaining more info....perhaps you would send me your file, or the details of the people I'm interested in.  Please respond.....thanks......Cyndy  Artist1079@aol.com
