THE HOPKINS FAMILY
There were at least four Hopkins males, Robert, Thomas, Dennis, and Richard, living in TA
Co. in the 17th century. Two or more of them may have been bros., but for purposes of this
study, each is treated as head of a different line.
THE DENNIS HOPKINS FAMILY
1. DENNIS -HOPKINS,- d. by 1739. He married. 1st, Grace
(N), and 2nd, by 1708, Elizabeth (N).
Dennis Hopkins was transported cl663.(mpL -4:150] At
March Court 1668, Wm Marshall, servant to Dennes Hopkins, was judged to serve 10
yearS.[ARMD LIV: 436, Liber BB No.2:102)
On 17 da., 8 mo., 1678, it was noted that members of
Meeting should visit Dennis Hopkins and his wife
regarding his woman servant [probably concerning their treatment of her]. The woman
servant was examined, Dennis Hopkins and his wife were cleared [THMM]

He may be the Dennis Hopkins, Jr., who at Nov Court 1705
acknowledged receiving 10 bushels of Indian corn from Jane Hemsley widow of Wm Hemsley,
after the decease of Wm Hemsley, having paid him before his death (TAJU RF10]
On 25 May 1702 Dennis Hopkins, Sr., and his wife Grace,
conv. to Gilbert Livesey of Liverpoole, England, mariner, 1 a. in the town of Williamstadt
between a lot of Livesy's on the e. and a lot formerly belonging to George Robotham on the

On 2 June 1726 Dennis Hopkins, a Quaker, age c52
stated about 26-28 years earlier he was summoned as a juryman on the land related to a
contest between WM Sharpe and MICHAEL RusselL (TALC: 42]
On 17 Oct 1727 Dennis Hopkins and his wife Elizabeth
conv. To Isaac Johns and Francis Hutchins of CV Co., a 40 ft. square parceL, The Tent
House Land, whereon there now stands a house called a Tent House built by the Quakers
belonging to the Clifts and Herring Creek Meetings.(TALR 13.-376]
On 9 Jan 1734 Dennis Hopkins Sr. and his wife Elizabeth
conv. to Henry Nicols clerk, 86 a., part of Hopkins Point on the w. side of
Threadhaven Creek. [TALR 14.-59]
Dennis Hopkins, planter, of TA Co., d. leaving a will
dated 19 Feb 1738 and proved 24 April 1739. Named were eldest son John, third son Richard,
fourth son Wm and fifth son SamueL who were left 1 s each, they having received their
portions; second son Dennis, 100 a. of Hopkins Point, where he now lived, that is
to say, as far as the dividing line between his bro. John and he, held now by Henry
Nicolls, and at upper end between line of Joseph Hopkins and him which is now Barrets;
sixth son Joshua, after decease of wife, dwell plant.,

being 106 a. of London Derry; and daus. Susannah
Parratt and Sarah Bartlett. Wife Elizabeth extx., to have use of dwell. plant. and
personal estate, at her decease personalty to be divided among children. The will was

On or about 27 Nov 1739 Elizabeth Hopkins, widow of
Dennis Hopkins, gave to her dau. Susannah Parrott, wife of Isaiah Parrott and their
children a Negro woman named Jenny, and gave to her dau. Sarah Bartlett, wife of James
Bartlett of DO Co., a Negro girl named Peg. [TALR 14:420]

2. DENNIS HOPKINS, son of Dennis, was b. cl678.
As Dennis Hopkins, Quaker, he gave his age as 52 in 1725,
55 in 1728, and 58 in 1731. [TALC 1: 43-44, 120-121, 204] A deposition Made
in 1731 seems to state that his father was Dennis Hopkins. (TALC 1: 164-165, 166] He
was c58 years of age in April 1730-1.(TAEJ: Fletcher, Michael) On 23 April 1728
Dennis HopKINS, Sr., age c55, made a statement regarding a bounded tree between Bedsworth
and Coventry. (TALC PFB.,118]
On 25 AprIl 1730 Dennis Hopkins, age c56, mentioned his
father, Thomas HopkINs [sic] and affirmed regarding the first tree of Hopkins' Point. (TALC6:163]

1770. He m-Sarah (N).

the ADMIN, with Charles Bullen and Thomas Delehay, sureties. DLstribution was: 1/3 to the
widow and accountant, and 2/3 to the two children, James and Richard(BFD 5.-379]
On 31 Aug 1772 a valuation was made of the land of James
Hopkins, son of Peter Hopkins, dec.; Theophilus Small, guardian. Theophilus Small to pay
James Hopkins yearly, 200 lbs. of tob. during the life of the widow Hopkins, mother to the
dec. Peter Hopkins and after her decease Small to pay James Hopkins 300 lbs. of tob.

3. SOLOMON HOPKINS , son of Richard (1), was named
in his father's will. He evidently married contrary to the Quaker discipline. On 28 da., 5
mo., 1767, Third Haven Meeting noted that Solomon Hopkins having accomplished his marriage
by a priest, he was disowned.(THMM]
On 10 March 1769 Lambert Hopkins, shoemaker, and his wife
ELIZABETH, conv. to Solomon Hopkins, joyner, 1/4 a., part of Solomon's Beginning. (TALR

THE ROBERT HOPKINS FAMILY
1. ROBERT HOPKINS, d. by Nov 1661. Although he seems to
have had no children, his will named a bro. Thomas, and mentioned his father and two bros.
and hs. A succession of deeds seems to confirm that Robert had a bro. named Thomas, and
Thomas had a bro. named Dennis, and that Dennis had a bro. named Richard.
There were fisted two Robert Hopkins who arrived in MD
before 1661. One Robert Hopkins was transported cl650.(MPL Q:201) Another
Robert was transported cl652 as a Servant.(MPL ABH:322, Q:428]
Robert and Thomas Hopkins had laid out jointly Hopkins'
Point. (TALR 12:222] Thomas Hopkins patented 100 a. of Hopkins Point on
22 Dec 1684, but this may have been a different tract.(MPL 25:189, 32:362]
On 26 Oct 1695 Thomas HoPkins, with consent of wife
Elizabeth, conv. to his bro. Dennis, 326 a., part of Hopkins'Point. Thomas' wife

Hopkins Gent., age 77, stated that upwards of 50 years earlier Richard Bayly with his wife

TA Co. and there kept a tavern until he d. His two elder sons named John and Richard were
never married, to his understanding (that of Thomas Hopkins) but that the youngest son named

4. JOSEPH HOPKiNS, son of Thomas (1) and
Elizabeth, was b. 1680, and d. 1728. He m Susannah (N), who m. 2nd, Peter Denny.
On 17 1713 James and Joseph Hopkins agreed to a division
of the plantation whereon their father Thomas Hopkins, dec., lived, and devised to them in
his will written 16 April 1700; James to get the land to the north and Joseph the southern

Joseph Hopkins of TA Co., died leaving a will dated 6 Dec
1726 and proved 5 Feb 1728. Named were eldest son Joseph who was devised part of Hopkin's
Point as far as Schoolhouse Marsh, adi. land of Dennis Hopkins; son Benjamin, to have
part of the afsd. tract at head of Compones Cove, at age of 21; wife Susannah, extx.,
residue of real estate, and at her decease to son Benjamin; and all daus. (unnamed). The
will was witnessed by Dennis (Denis) Hopkins, Sr., John Robson and Sarah Hopkins. (MB
19:661]
On 10 March 1730 and 10 March 1732 the estate of Joseph
Hopkins was admin. by Joseph's dau. Susannah Bruff, formerly Susannah Hopkins. An
inventory of English pounds, 145.10.11 was mentioned.(MDAD 10:707, 11:677]

On 18 May 1734 his estate was admin. by his widow Susanna
now wife of Peter Denney. Distribution was made to the accountant and to the children of
the dec.-, Joseph Benjamin, and Susanna Hopkins, and Elizabeth Grason, dau. of Joseph
Grason, who m. Ruth dec. dau. Of Joseph Hopkins. (MDAD 12: 276)
On 3 June 1736 Thomas Bruff acknowledged to Peter Denny
who m. Susannah Bruffe, widow and extx. of Joseph Hopkins, late of TA Co., receipt of
English pounds 13.5.5 being the portion of his wife Susannah, dau. to sd. Joseph Hopkins.
Joseph Hopkins, son of Joseph Hopkins, likewise acknowledged receipt of English pounds
10.7.9, the filnial father's portion of his father's estate. Joshua Greson acknowledged
receipt of English 5.5.9, the filial portion due his wife Ruth, dau. of afsd. Joseph
Hopkins. Benjamin Hopkins acknowledged receipt of English pounds, 13.7.9, the f portion
due him of the estate of his father, Joseph Hopkins. (TALR 14:160, 161]
On 28 July 1746 Thomas Carslake acknowledged to Peter
Denny and his wife Susanna execs. of Joseph Hopkins, dec., English pounds 13.5.6 paper
money in full for 10.12.3.3 gold currency - in full for the finial portion due his wife
Elizabeth dau. of Joshua Grason and his wife Ruth, the dau. of Joseph Hopkins, dec., who
d. in his lifetime.[TALR 16:313] Joseph and Susanna were the parents of. JOSEPH;
BENJAMIN; SUSANNAH, m. Thomas Bruff; and RUTH, m. Joshua Grason.
5. ROBERT HOPKINS, son of Thomas (1) and
Elizabeth, d. by June 1718. He m. Elizabeth (N).
At February Court 1697 it was presented that Robert
Hopkins, shoemaker, and Elizabeth Howard, wife of David Howard, had kept ill conversation
with one another by common fame. Witnesses were John Newnam Sr., Ralph Swift and John

At March Court 1714, Robert Hopkins brought a boy named
Nehemiah Higgins whose mother being --- and father gone out of the country, to be bound to
him until of age. [TAJU FT#1:271
Robert Hopkins of TA Co., d. leaving a will dated 13 May
1718 and proved 17 June 1718. Named were wife Elizabeth, extx., to whom was devised the
tract Turkey Park during her widowhood and until son Robert arrived at age of 18;
four children (unnamed), sons to have their portion at 18 years, daus. at 16 years. The
overseers were bros. James and Joseph Hopkins. The will was witnessed by Dennis HopKINS,
