JONES

David Jones was born in 1594 in England. He was settled in Charles City County by 1624 and died there between 1665 and 1673. His property in Weyanoke Parish was near James Jones and the Rev. Richard Jones who are believed to have been his sons. Other children may have been John, Mary, and Ann.

This James Jones (c.1640-1719) probably married first a daughter of Christopher Lewis and then Sarah W. Mumford. His children , including Elizabeth and James who are both in our direct line, were:

In the fourth generation, Richard Jones (1702-1774) married Ann Hamilton (1709-1774) in 1724 . Their children included Hamilton (who married Jacobina Willie), James, Richard, John, Robert, William, Nathaniel, Susannah (Curetor), and Ann.

Research first pointed to Richard and Ann's daughter Ann as having been the wife of Mason Bishop, but it now seems more likely that Ann Jones Bishop was the daughter of another son, possibly  William.

When Mason wrote his will, witnesses included Hamilton Jones, his wife Jacobina, and his brother Nathan Jones. Mason's wife Ann is surely of this family, but her exact relationship in the Jones family is not definitely known.
