Nicholas SMITH

Nicholas Smith (c.1655-1719) of Surry County, Virginia was probably the brother of Arthur Smith of Isle of Wight and son of Thomas who died in 1669. Nicholas married Elizabeth Flood. Their children wereNicholas, John, Lawrence, William, Mary, Ann and Elizabeth.

William Smith , who died between 1750-8, was married to Ann Sterling and\or Ann Isham. Their children were Cuthbert, Isham, Josiah,William, Sarah, Lucy and Susanna.

Cuthbert Smith was married twice. The name of the first wife is not known, but a notation by a Lucy Smith Crutchfield, this researcher's great-grandmother,  gives the name of her great-grandmother as Tabitha Jones who married "a Mr. Smith".  We believe this to be Tabitha Jones, the daughter of Tabitha Bird  and Richard Jones. The notation further states that the daughter of Tabitha Smith and Mr. Smith was Lucy Smith who married John Maholland.  The research of Virginia Stephenson of Ponca City, Oklahoma finds a Lucy Smith, the daughter of Cuthbert  Smith, to have married John Maholland.

The second wife was Elizabeth Chamberlain Lanier, a widow. They married in 1758. The children are listed in Cuthbert's will in the order of all males and then all females, and it is not known definitely which children were of the first or second marriage. They were - as listed in the will : Charles, Stephen, John, James, Frederick, Benjamin, Sally, Lucy (mentioned above), Mary, Susannah, Ann, Elizabeth and Frances.

Our primary interest is in two of these children:

Stephen Smith (c.1755-1818) who married Olive Harrison.

Stephen's daughter, Mary Elizabeth Smith, married Drury Pearson.

Their great-grandson was John William Pearson.

Lucy Smith (dates unknown) who married John Maholland.
.
Her daughter, Nancy Allen Maholland, married Samuel Crutchfield.

Their great-granddaughter was Lillian Blackwood.

John W. Pearson and Lillian Blackwood married.  They were the parents of Virginia Pearson Green, this researcher.
