Rev Thomas A Ahearn, 65, pastor of Blessed Sacrament, Miners Mills section of Wilkes-Barre, died yesterday morning in Mercy Hospital, Wilkes-Barre, where he was admitted Thursday. Native of Susquehanna, born 7 Nov 1880, son of the late John J & Mary Conway Ahearn. St John's grade school; Laurel Hill Academy, Susquehanna; Niagra University, NY; St Ignatius University, Chicago; Dunwoodie Seminary, Yonkers NY; post-grad work at Catholic University. Ordained 13 Jul 1911 by the late Bshop M J Hoban. Assistant pastor at St Agnes, Towanda; St Leo's, Ashley; the chapel at Eagles Mere; Holy Name, Swoyersville; St Aloysius, Wilkes-Barre. Appointed pastor of St Anthony's, Stowell, in 1927. In 1931 became pastor of St Andrew's, Blossburg. Named pastor of Blessed Sacrament May 1939. Survived by brother, John J Ahearn of Jackson Heights NY; niece, Mrs John Rega of Grantwood NJ; & aunt, Mrs E J McCarty of Chicago. Funeral Weds, Blessed Sacrament; interment in Susquehanna. Rev Joseph D. Ayd, 76, former principal of St Joseph's Prep School in Philadelphia & former President of Scranton Prep, died Weds at Mercy Hospital in Scranton, Pa. He lived at the Scranton Jesuit Community at the University of Scranton. Born in Baltimore and raised on East Monument Street ....Ordained a Jesuit priest in 1954, graduate of St Louis University, where he received a bachelor of science in biology in 1948. In 1955, he received a bachelor's degree in theology from Woodstock College. ....Funeral yesterday. Survived by two brothers, Frank Ayd and Robert Ayd, both of Baltimore; and two sisters, Jane Morales of York, Pa., and Regina Brockmeyer of Baltimore.

Rev Philip F Barrett, OSA

[photo] Rev Philip F Barrett, OSA, native of Larksville, has been named dean of Villanova University School of Commerce and Finance, succeeding the late Joseph G Bartley,OSA, who died last month after more than 40 years in the position. Former rector of Archbishop Carroll High School in Washington DC. Graduate of Plymouth High School. 3 years of naval intelligence during WWII. Graduate of Villanova and taught at Kings College, Wilkes-Barre, before entering the Augustinians in 1949. Ordained in 1953.

[photo] Rev John Edward Bell, pastor of St Pius X chapel in Harding & St Margaret Mary's in Falls, died Sun at Scranton State Hospital. Born in Vandling, son of William and Mary Ann Murnin Bell of Lake Ariel. Vandling High School; St Charles College, Catonsville MD; St Bernard's Seminary, Rochester NY. Ordained 30 May 1942 at St Peter's Cathedral by the late Bishop William J Hafey. Asst pastor & administrator at St Joseph's, Matamora and St Francis, Nanticoke; assistant pastor at Annunciation, Williamsport; St Ignatus, Kingston; & St John the Evangelist, Pittston. Pastor of St Joachim's, Meshoppen, 1964-1967. Also surviving are two brothers, James P of Springfield NJ & Joseph J of Lake Ariel; two aunts, Mrs Helen Fitzsimmons of Parsippany NJ & Mrs Margaret Murnin of Lake Ariel; nieces & nephews. Another aunt, Sr Mary Colet Murnin, IHM, of the Marian Convent, died in 1973. Funeral Weds at Immaculate Conception, West Pittston, celebrated by Bishop J Carroll McCormick; St Agnes Cemetery, Forest City.

Rev James A Boland

[photo] Rev James A Boland, pastor of Immaculate Conception, Taylor, for the past ten years & one of the best known priests of the diocese, died this morning in the church rectory. Had been ill, but death was unexpected. Was seriously ill with pneumonia at Christmas & when he recovered, went to FL with his brother, Msgr Patrick J Boland, in an effort to regain his strength. Returned a few weeks ago & suffered a relapse a few days ago. Death from cardiac arreSt Born 10 Nov 1886 in Archbald, son of James & Ann Killeen Boland. Olyphant schools; St Thomas College; St Bonaventure College & Seminary, Allegany NY; also studied at American College, Rome. Ordained 15 Jun 1915, Assistant at Mount Pocono;Dushore; St Leo's, Ashley; St Matthew's, Stroudsburg; St John's, Susquehanna; and St Gabriel's, Hazleton. Appointed administrator of St Lucy's, West Scranton, in 1926. Survived by three brothers, Msgr Boland, Dr Frank Boland of Yeadon & Joseph Boland of Philadelphia; 1 sister, Mrs Louis Toolan of Carbondale. Funeral Monday at Immaculate Conception, Taylor.

Bishop Andrew J Brennan

[photo] Bishop Andrew J Brennan, 78, native of Towanda, former auxiliary bishop of Scranton & retired Bishop of Richmond, VA, died this morning in De Paul Hospital, Norfolk, VA, of cerebral hemorage. Victim of protracted illness which kept him confined to hospitals since he was stricken with a cerebral hemorage 23 years ago, only 7 years after appointed Bishop of Richmond by Pope Pius XI. Since then confined to hospitals in Norfolk & Scranton, spending 9 months each year in St Vincent's, Norfolk, which was rebuilt & renamed DePaul Hospital, and then transferred for the summer months each year to Mercy Hospital, Scranton. Last year was unable to enter Mercy for the first time due to his failing condition. He continued daily attendance at mass until Mon morning. When his nurse, Sr Catherine of the Sisters of Charity of St Vincent de Paul, went to wake his, she found he had had a second cerebral hemorrhage. Shortly afterward he became unconscious. Four priests & four nuns of the Richmond Diocese were by his bedside, including Rev Francis Bradigan, pastor of a church in Craddock, VA, and native of Dunmore who served as an altar boy for Bishop Brennan when the latter was pastor of St Mary's, Dunmore. Others at his side were Very Rev Carroll T Dozier, pastor of Christ the King ....

Msgr Vincent P Burke

[photo] Monsignor Vincent P Burke, a priest in the diocese of Scranton for more than 50 years, died today at St Patrick's rectory on Jackson St Pastor of St Patrick's for more than 28 years. Born in Scranton on 19 Mar 1910, son of the late James & Mary McHale Burke. St Thomas College; St Mary's Seminary in Baltimore, MD; Roman Pontifical Seminary in Rome; doctorate in sacred theology from Lateran University, Rome. Ordained to priesthood in Rome on 6 Dec 1934 by the late Archbishop Palica. Upon return to Scranton, asst pastor of St Peter's Cathedral until appointed vice chancellor of the diocese 15 Oct 1936. Appointed chancellor in 1947. Pastor of St Patrick's 18 Oct 1956. Named domestic prelate May 1948 by the late Pope Pius XII.... Observed golden anniversary last Dec. Survived by a sister-in-law, Mrs Edna Burke, and three nephews. Mass Fri in St Patrick's Church; Cathedral Cemetery.
