Husband and Wife Die

Oelwein Register: It is not often that there is chronicled the passing of an aged couple who after more than half a century of married life are called to the other world but a comparatively few hours apart. Tuesday evening, Nov. 30, at 9:10, Mrs. B. E. Hough fell into the last sleep following an illness of but a few days, and Wednesday afternoon, Dec. 1, Mr. Hough answered the last summons, after an illness of less than a week.
For thirty-three years they had been citizens of Oelwein in the same location, 33 Second Ave. S., and for nearly three score years they had been well known residents of Fayette county. After fifty-five years of wedded life their departure almost together is something remarkable. The bodies will lie in state at the old home Friday from 9 to 10:15 a.m. and the last services for them will be held from the Episcopal church on the street nearly opposite at 10:30 conducted by Dr. Gilbert, the pastor. The business houses of the city will be closed during the hour of the funeral as a mark of respect for these pioneer people.
          B. E. Hough was born near Toronto, Ontario, April 10, 1835 and was therefore eighty years, six months and twenty days of age at the time of his death. In 1865 he came to Iowa and settled on a farm in Oran township, near Fairbank. In the spring of 1860 he was united in marriage to Miss Jane Codling. They continued to reside on the farm till 1882, when they became residents of Oelwein, which has been their home for a third of a century. Mr. Hough took a prominent part in the business life of this section and served the city for a number of years as councilman and mayor. He was prominently identified with the history of the city and was progressive in his tendencies. He was a well known figure on the streets, and was down town every day up to within the past few days. He was a member of the B.P.O.E. and attended many of the sessions of the order. He had an extended acquaintance not only in the city but throughout this section. Besides his three children, the grandchildren and great-grandchildren, he is survived by a sister, Miss A. M. Hough, of Portland, Ore.
Jane Codling was born in Newcastle-on-Tyne, England, Sept. 24, 1838. With her family she came to America in 1857 and the family located near Fairbank. In 1860 she was united in marriage to B. E. Hough. They came to Oelwein in 1882. She was the mother of two sons, Fred W. and Herbert B. and a daughter, Mrs. J. S. Sayles, who survive her. There is also a sister, Mrs. Belle Hough of this city, and a brother, Joseph Codling of Vancouver, B. C. There are six grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. She was a noble Christian wife and mother and she was beloved by not only her family but also others associated with her. She was a faithful member of the Episcopal church in all these years.
