DeHart Reunion - 1938

THE DEHART CLANS GATHER FROM MANY SECTIONS FOR ANNUAL REUNION - SUNDAY, AUGUST 14, 1938

As reported by Bryson City Times, August 18 1938

The ninth annual reunion of the DeHarts was held Sunday, August 14, 1938, in the Grove of Oaks, at the Coburn DeHart home, on highway 19. About three hundred were present and enjoyed the bountiful dinner brought from everywhere.

The business session was presided over by E. Carroll Gibson, the president. The meeting was opened with prayer by Rev. C.F. Myers, of High Point. Following the usual preliminaries Sam DeHart, of Stuart, VA, spoke interestingly of DeHart achievements here and elsewhere. He exhibited the Coat of Arms of the family, beautifully hand-painted, and encased in a frame made by a DeHart craftsman. The Coat of Arms is a badge of honor attained by ancient families for an exemplary life devoted to the benefits of humanity, and, as the speaker stated, the use of same cannot be bought. Among other things Mr. DeHart stressed the importance of family reunions--the time for meeting, often for the first time in many years, the kin and friends of other days.

John Burnett, an old and honored citizen of Swain county, was asked and did make an interesting talk concerning the early days of the DeHart family of which he is a branch.

Robert P. DeHart, of Endicott, Va, a very diligent student of geneology (sic) , next addressed the gathering. He read an historically valuable letter, now in possion of Vance DeHart, written by Nathan DeHart to Martin DeHart, on May 3 1858, and filled with interesting data. The speaker insisted that all such letters and documents be gathered and preserved for the use of someone who will write a history of the family. He told of the trend of the family in the owning of land and merchandising. To own land seems to be the universal desire of a DeHart and a commendable one it is. Mr. DeHart has attended previous reunions here and is highly respected.

G.A. DeHart, of Buffalo Ridge, VA., and William DeHart, of Woolwine, VA., made brief remarks and invoited all present to the two Dehart reunions scheduled to be held, one at Buffalo Ridge, Va., the other at Gate City, Va.

Other speakers were listened to very attentively.

Memorial services were conducted for the following named kin who passed on since the last reunion: Mrs. John T. DeHart, Ernie DeHart, Ben Breedlove, Wilkey McHan, William Bates and Mrs. William Allen.
