DEHART, John - He migrated to Louisiana. On April 19,1797, John Dehart, age 43 years arrived in the Ouachita District of Louisiana with his wife Anna, age 43 years and the following children: Abraham age 14 years b. ca. 1783; John, age 12 years b. ca 1785 m. Mildred Meriwether 31 May 1815; Wynant age 10 years b. ca. 1787; Jane age 7 years b. ca. 1790 m. James C. Cooper (he died 1 mo. later), m. William Weathersby Owens 19 Mar 1840; Jacob (James) age 2 years b. ca. 1795 m. Diana Terry 4 March 1816. They came to Louisiana in accordance with a contract John entered into with Baron de Bastrop to settle land in the Ouachita District. Given the ages listed on the ship's passenger list, John Dehart and his wife Anna would have been born ca. 1754. Given the ages of their children, they were probably married about 1783-84. In the 1790 census for Westmoreland County, Fairfield township, there is a John Dehart listed with the following: fwm over 16-1; fwm under 16-3' fwf all ages -2. This fits with the John Dehart family who came to Louisiana. John (the father) would have been the over 16, the 3 males under 16 would have been Abraham, , John (the son), and Wynant, the two females are obviously Anna and Jane. I have not found this family on any other census for Pennsylvania to indicate they would have remained in Pennsylvania. In the 1810 Census for Ouachita Parish, Louisiana, John Dehart is listed with the following; fwm 45 & over-1(John, the father); fwm 26 to 44 -1(Abraham?); fwm 16 to 25 - 2 (Wynant and John the son); fwm 10 to 15- 1( James); 1 fwf over 45 (Anna). John died ca. 1811 in Ouachita Parish. There is a listing Abraham, the son in a separate household in Ouachita Parish. This listing has Abraham with the following: fwm <10-2; fwm >26<45-1 (Abraham) ;fwf <10-1; fwf >26<45 - 1 (wife, possibly Mary Owens). Jane's whereabouts unknown. According to E. Russ Williams, Jr. who published a biography of the founding families of the Ouachita Valley of Louisiana, " the family of John Dehart (the son) migrated to the Chicot County, Arkansas area by 1850; he must have died as his wife was listed as a widow in Chicot County's 1850 census with family #79/79." Please contact Carletta Dunne with information.
