in the following Genealogy:I am descended from Maguires in two separate lineages: in the direct male line the Fermanagh MacAuleys are descended from Auley Maguire who died in 1306, and DNA testing has confirmed this. My McAuleys are from Derrylahan in County Cavan, but I try to keep data on all Maguire McAuleys. My other Maguire lineage is also from Derrylahan in County Cavan. This is in the Civil Parish of Templeport and the Catholic Parish of Glangevlin. My GGgrandmother was Elizabeth Rose Maguire, who married Michael (Vicky) McGovern and had numerous descendants, many of whom I know. Two of her brothers were Alexander Maguire (1805-1903)and Francis Maguire. I believe their father was Thomas Maguire of Derrylahan, who died in 1840. Thomas Maguire left a will, but I fear that it was destroyed in the Four Courts fire. The descendants of of Alexander Maguire (1805-1903)have mostly emigrated, although Bridget Maguire McAuley still owns the ancestral farm near the Shannon Pot. I believe that the descendants of Francis Maguire own Maguire's Pub in Black Lion on the Cavan-Fermanagh border. Looking at the 1856 Griffith's Valuation for Derrylahan, there were seven Maguire families: Alexander, Francis, Charles, James, and three Patricks. Also, Michael McGovern the husband of Elizabeth Rose Maguire is listed. Finally, my GGgrandfather Patrick McAulay and his brother John, are also listed in Derrylahan. So if you're ancestors came from Glangevlin, especially Derrylahan, then we're probably related. Drop me a line. PatrickMacAuley

The Ulster surname MacCawley and sometimes spelt MACCOWLEY are variants of MacAuley, from the Gaelic MACAMHLOIBH. They are a branch of the MacGuires that belong to the Co. Fermanagh where thay have given their name to the barony of Clanawley. While our surname was originally preceded by a prefix it is rearely found as MacCooley today. In general, Gaelic prefixes, which date from the tenth century, tended to be discarded from the seveteenth century on. from - Part 5 of Annals of the Four Masters U.C.C. m1593.5 The Maguire and the Brian O'ROURKE before mentioned confederated during the summer to war against and plunder the English. Brian, the son of Hugh Oge, son of Hugh, son of John Boy MACMAHON, from Dartry-Oriel; the sons of Ever MacCooley, from Farney; and Richard, son of Ulick BURKE, i.e. the son of DEAMHON-AN-CHARRAIN, were also insurrection the English. These people or Oriel made an attack upon a company of soldiers who were stationed at Monaghan, and slew the greater part of them; wherefore a proclamation was issued to every town in Ireland, declaring the aforesaid persons and their confederates to be traitors to the Crown of England.

He emigrated to Chicago, Illinois as a young man around 1890, speaking only Gaelic. He married a cousin, Elizabeth McCrory, (born 2 July 1864, died 14 March 1918) and they had three children, Mary (May), my grandmother, born 1895 (in Chicago? uncertain) and two boys. At some point in the early 1900s, the family returned to Fermanagh--the family lore says that an elder brother died and Edward inherited the family farm. After a year he decided to sell it and returned with his family to Chicago. May died of spinal menigitis in 1930, when my father was only 7, so we've lost a great deal of family information. Edward died in 1960, and I can just remember him from when I was a child. Any information as to the exact location of this particular McGuire farm near Knockninny would be appreciated. .

My g-grandfather, Patrick Henry McGuire (nee Maguire) emigrated to Canada as a small child with his parents, Bernard Maguire (1809-1881, Cavan) x Susan McHugh (b 1817, d 1847). Bernard's parents were Patrick Maguire x Catherine Dolan. Patrick & Catherine had the following children: Thomas (b. Derrylahan, d. Ann Maguire; Phillip d. 1847), Brian, Edward, and John (single, lived w/ brother Phillip in Derrylahan). According to Jackman Family history, he married "Lord Maguire's daughter, Mary" and they immigrated from Europe to America. Judging by the title and date, the Lord Macquire was Lord Conor Maguire who married Mary FLEMING. He was the Lord chief of the Maguires who owned most of Co. Fermanagh. They had at least one known child, Lord Comelius Maguire, with her when she fled to France after her husband's capture and execution for treason in London on 20 Feb. 1644/45 as a result of his part in the 1641 Uprising. He attempted to capture the castle at Dublin, but was captured as a result of the treachery of Owen O'Connolly, employed by Sir John Clotworthy. Submitted by George W. Page, husband of Patrica C. I feel perhaps the children of his sister may have at some stage had contact and there may be family in the states who have heard of this elopement in the family and its consequences. in the following Genealogy:Genealogy: To the best of my knowledge: John McGuire / Maguire was born abt 1806, perhaps in Fermanagh. His wife, Margaret Fleming was born abt 1808, but don't know where. There are no documents to verify this information. They had six children (that I know of), all born in Co. Cavan: Patrick, b. 1841;John, b. 1844; James, b. 1847; Michael, b. 1851 - all according to US Naturalization Petitions. There was also a daughter, Jane and another son, Thomas. Thomas is said to have gone to Australia. Patrick arrived in New York in 1857. James, Michael and Margaret arrived in Boston in 1868. John and Jane are unaccouted for, but could have been on the same boat with James, Michael and Margaret. I believe that John (the father) died in Ireland about 1867, after which Margaret emigrated. Once in the US, James, John and Michael settled in New Hampshire and were granite contractors. John is my g-grandfather. All descendents are accounted for. I can provide details if anyone is interested. I am in contact with a genealogist / historian in Fermanagh who is quite certain that the family originated in Aghnagloch or Monanacloy, Parish of Galoon. Additional information is welcome.

During the Revolutionary War, William and Mary McGuire, with son Michael, were taken prisoner on 26 June 1780 and moved from Virginia to Montreal, Quebec, in Canada, where they were interned for over two years by the British. A British record from Quebec, dated 16 September 1782, shows William with wife Mary and sons Michael and Thomas on the list "Return of Women and Children Prisoners with their Husbands to be sent to their Homes," and Revolutionary War records show that in October 1782, William was sent from the Province of Quebec for exchange by way of Lake Champlain. In the early 1800s, William bought property and they settled in Bedford County, Tennessee, where William McGuire and wife Mary Shirley McGuire are buried in the Horse Mountain Cemetery on Horse Mountain Road between Shelbyville and Wartrace, Tennessee. in the following Genealogy:Genealogy: Can anyone help me. I am trying to trace information on the maternal side of my family. My grandfather's name was Alex BYRNE, and my grandmother's name was Margaret MCGUIRE, before she married. John James McGuire was her fathers name. He was married to Elizabeth (nee DELARGY) We are from a Scottish/Irish family. My gran Margaret Byrne (nee McGuire) was born 27 March 1916 and died, 2 May, 2007, aged 91. I think my gran was born in the Glasgow area, but her parents may possibly have come over from Ireland. If anyone has any relevant information, I would be very grateful, if it could be forwarded to me at the above email address. I would love to know more about my family history. Kind regards, Elaine Reid

in the following Genealogy:Genealogy: Hello there ! I'm just being curious. My mom was born in Lisnaskea (Maguire's Bridge)in the county of Fermanagh on August 31, 1922. She was baptised Margaret Bridget Maguire. She married a Canadian soldier in England in October of 1943 during the war. She was from quite a large family, unfortunately her leaving Ireland was not well received by her family and there was no communication following her departure. I'm sure I have quite a few Maguire relatives still in Ireland. You never know, sometimes the strangest things can happen when you try hard enough. Thank you for taking the time to read this and good luck. Maureen S. Carroll Apple Hill, Ontario, Canada mcarroll@matcoltee.com

in the following Genealogy:Genealogy: My Grandfather, Edward Joseph Maguire, was born in Pennsylvania or close by on August 11th 1920. He had a much older "brother" by the name of George Maguire, who we think may have actually been his father. Edward was raised by his wealthy "parents" to believe that George was his brother (which he may have been but there is much speculation) When the man of the house passed away when Edward was 5 or 6 his "mother" and George lost all their income and moved to Los Angeles, Ca. At about 20 yrs old, Edward joined the Navy and then met and married Patricia Stover in 1945. They gave birth to their first son Charles Joseph Maguire in September 1946. They had 3 more children, Maureen Maguire, Mark Maguire and Patrick Maguire. I would like to find out the names of the persons who raised Edward and if they were his actual parents or grandparents.
