Descendants of Mary Anderson

Generation No. 1

        1.  Mary6 Anderson  (James5, Thomas4, Thomas3, Thomas2, Richard1) (Source: James Anderson, 1751 Will of James Anderson,  (Will Book 9, Page 772, Surry County, Virginia).) was born Bet. 1715 - 1720 in "Arnols", Surry County, Virginia, and died Bet. 1765 - 1779 in Sussex County, Virginia.  She married Edward Eppes (Source: John Frederick Dorman, Ancestors and Descendants of Francis Epes I of Virginia, Volume One,  (Society of the Dscendants of Francis Epes I of Virginia; 1992.).) Abt. 1738 in Surry County, Virginia, son of Daniel Eppes and Mary ?.  He was born 1710 in Surry County, Virginia, and died 1780 in Sussex County, Virginia.

Notes for Mary Anderson:

Mary would have been born on her father's Surry County plantation called "Arnols.  Apparently there was little contact with her brothers later in Amelia as no oral tradition or correspondence regarding Mary's family passed to the later generations. She is not mentioned in "Genealogy in part, of the Anderson-Owen-Beall families"; By Grant James Anderson; Richmond Virginia; Whitter & Shepperson printers, 1909.

She married Edward Eppes the son of Daniel Eppes who had been a land owner adjacent James Anderson in the 1710-1718 time period.

Dates of birth of her children are from the Albemarle Parish Register. Christening dates are; Amy 11/20/1739, Sarah not given, Anne 01/08/1744, Mary 08/31/1746, James 04/29/1749, Winny 10/20/1751, Susanna 11/25/1753, Elizabeth 08/29/1756, Frances 07/29/1759. There is disagreement in some instance with the work of Eva Turner Clark.  Examination of the microfilm of the Albemarle Parish Register at the Library of Virginia will be the only way to resolve any errors.

Edward inherited his fathers lands in 1753 along the Nottoway River adjacent the land which James Anderson had sold to Joshua Meachum in 1718. He lived on this land all his life never patenting or buying additional lands.  He does appear as witness on various neighbors documents.

Edward had six tithables in Sussex County in 1754

Edward's will dated 06/08/1779 and probated 02/17/1780 bequeaths a negro to each of his daughters by name Sarah Tomlinson, Ann Gibbons, Mary Moss, Susanna Harrison. He gives to his son James the estate that he lives on and names son James and son-in-law Henry Moss, Jr. executors.  Witnesses are Robert Watson, Susanna Moss, Martha Meachum.  Sussex County will book C page 348.  The inventory of the estate is filed 02/25/1780 on page 362.

41              v.    Mary Anderson Eppes, born Abt. 1783.

42             vi.    Littlebury Eppes, born Abt. 1785.

        7.  Winifred7 Eppes (Mary6 Anderson, James5, Thomas4, Thomas3, Thomas2, Richard1) was born September 16, 1751 in Surry County, Virginia (Source: Gertrude R. B. Richards, Register of Albemarle Parish, Surry and Sussex Counties, 1739-1778,  (The National Society Colonial Dames of America in the Commonwealth of Virginia; 1958).), and died in Sussex County, Virginia.  She married Thomas Whitfield.  He died 1794 in Sussex County, Virginia.

Notes for Winifred Eppes:

Some family members suspect that Winifred married Thomas Whitfield.  There is a deed between Edward Eppes and Thomas Whitfield which would lend credence to this, but becasue there were many other Winnefreds in the parish register I consider this marriage likely but unproven.  Winnefred Whitfield and her four cildren listed birthdates are found in

Register of Albemarle Parish, Surry and Sussex Counties, 1739-1778, Transcribed and Edited by Gertrude R. B. Richards, The National Society Colonial Dames of America in the Commonwealth of Virginia, 1958.

Broderbund Corporation World Family Tree Cd #5, pedigree 680 appears to be a continuation of this family in Tennessee.

Notes for Mary Gibbons:

!information from Ruth Helon England of Sparta, Tennessee

Molly Gibbons was the daughter of Anne Eppes and Thomas Gibbons. She married William Fitzgerald.  Her husband had died prior to the execution of her fathers will and he mentions her and her three children.  Because of this I suspect that she may be the Mary Gibbons of the Albemarle Parish entry although Molly is usually a nickname for Martha.  She was a resident of Hawkins County, Tennessee.  I am expecting to collect more information on Molly from Rtuh Hinkle Kicklighter

James Anderson's will was probated in Surry County in 1752.  He willed land to son John in Ameila County.  This land was adjacent to that of Thomas and Jordan.  Also, from Surry County records one Daniel Eppes bound himself to James Anderson, Jr. of Amelia County.  I was wondering if you are familiar with any of these people.

Thank you,

Ruth

Thank you for your response.  I am descended from James' daughter who married Edward Eppes. The line is Edward>Anne w/o Thomas Gibbons>Molly w/o William Fitzgerald>Nancy w/o James Isham.  For years I had been stuck with Nancy and James Isham. About a month ago I was given the name of Thomas Gibbons and I have had good luck from there. I noticed there are a few differences between what I have been able to turn up and what is on your web page, primarily in the Gibbons line.  When I collect a little more information I would love to exchange.

Thanks again

Ruth

I will also send you copies I made from the Family History Center (Mormons)

and through research at the S.B. City Library.

I have more documentation however it is currently packed up.  I will send it

to you as soon as I can get to the boxes.

I hope this will help you.  Please keep me informed if you find anything

additional.   You can either e-mail me at:  catalano@wiley.csusb.edu or send

I could send you my file, but it's 14.072 Meg and has 21500 names.  It would take a while and most of it wouldn't be of interest to you.

Let me know.

I got some new items from the info you sent.  All is appreciated.  It's getting harder and harder to find any thing new.  And it's so exasperating to try going downhill.  So many people want you to send them info on their family,  but don't want you to know anything about them!!!   Oh, well.  I've still got quite a lot of items to go through at the Madison and Carroll Counties Geneological libraries.  And the Jones Center for Families at Springdale has started a geneology center.  All those are in Northwest Arkansas.  A relative names Pauline (Devin) Gray has written a good book about the Devin, Howell, Nolan, Wade, Yarbrough, Gibbons, Eppes families, but all the copies she had printed went fast and she didn't get any more printed.  She was going to update it all, but I don't believe she will.  Getting too old to fool with it.  I've been trying to get her up-to-date info but haven't been successful.

Patrick, my name is Jean Gibbons and I live in Fredericksburg, TX.  For many years I have researched my husband's line which is from Matthew Gibbons.  While I believe his father was Thomas Gibbons and his mother Polly Hill, I have been unable to establish without a doubt that his father was Thomas Gibbons, Jr..  I noted with interest the information you had about Thomas Gibbons Jr.' wives and children which pretty well falls in line with my thinking.  However, I wonder if you could tell me how you came to the conclusion that Matthew is indeed a son.  I keep looking for that "something" that will tie this down to my satisfaction.  Can you help?  Thank you...

Patrick:

Thanks for sending the file on Thomas Gibbons, b 1769.  I think I have a correction on the marriage of Namon Gibbons and Sara Twilla.

Namon is my gg gfather, and he married Mary Simpson in Humphreys Co.  abt 1854.  I also found the marriage record for Namon Gibbons and Sara Twilla, but have not yet determined who these people were. I think this Namon is probably a nephew  of my Namon Gibbons.   The

Humphreys Co. Courthouse burned twice in the 1800's so records there are scarce.  Will post to the list when we get this straight.

I added the URL for your webpage as one of the taglines on the Gibbons mailing list.  Do you have any objection to that? I will

remove it if you want.   I also added Ruth Kicklighter webpage yesterday, - but I asked her first.

We're very glad to have knowledgable Gibbons researchers on the mailing list.

Saw your posting on Gibbons family. I have all of this info and the Epps

info but nothing on ANDERSON. Where did you find it? I found the other info

in Hawkins Co.

I descend from Thomas and Anne Epps Gibbons through their son, Edmond, then

his son Edmond M., etc. Edmond lived in Overton Co, TN and is buried in the

same cemetery with his son, Edmond M. and some of his family. Edmond

married Margarett Macy (Mason/Masoner) but I can find out nothing about her

either. Where do you come into this family?

I live on property that once was owned by the Gibbons family in Overton Co.

My grandmother was the granddaughter of Edmond M. and his old home is still

standing about 2 miles from where I live.

Have you seen the Thomas Gibbons home in Hawkins Co? It is still there

though it is much changed. They have left some of the original inner walls

as they were. I would like to find out where Thomas and Anne are buried.

There is a cemetery about 1/2-1 miles from their home and I wonder about

it, but wherever they are, it is unmarked.  Paula   pstover@twlakes.net

The Gillenwater would be Joel Gillenwater, born 1764 in

Amherst Co. Virginia. Joel's Father was Thomas Gillenwater,

his mother Martha (don't know her maiden name). She is listed

as the head of the household in the 1783 and 1785 Amherst Co.

census.

Joel and Sallie Loretta moved to Rogersville TN, where they had a

son William in 1787 (and several others too) who was my GGG-grandfather.

If you're interested in the GILLENWATER line that comes from William

(that leads to me), it was George A. GILLENWATER in 1821, whose

daughter Chassie (1867-1932) married Samuel MOLSBEE (1866-1949)

in 1888. They had a daughter Effie Cornelia, my grandmother.

Let me know if you need more info.

Eagle Pass, TX, buried: Eagle Pass, TX.  Thomas died 8 Sep 1891, Blanco,

TX.  G.S. White, Bn J.C. Westerfield It is from Thomas, the 6th son, whom

the Blanco Eppes descended.  Thomas Eppes was born in Mississippi and

married in Ky. in 1832.  Thomas began moving south, first in Tennessee

and then Ohio, then to Missisippi and thence to Belton, Texas, where he

had four more children, making a total, with two being born in Blanco, of

15 children.  Thomas Eppes owned a tanning yard there and during the

Civil War was very busy.   A community grew up around the tanning yard

and there is still a creek named Eppes Creek.  Texas was a very divided

state during the civil War.  At least two of Thomas Eppes' sons joined

the Confederate Army, but apparently Thomas was a Union sympathizer and

moved to Eagle Pass on the Mexican border to escape.  His wife and

youngest child died there and were buried there in 1884.  Later Thomas

Eppes moved to Hondo, New Mexico, with two of his sons and raised two

successful corn crops.  He then returned to Blanco and built a very

substantial rock home which has been restored and still being lived in.

It is said the walls were four feet thick.  In 1869 Thomas Eppes married

Mrs Lydia Campbell Pruitt, who was a widow with several children of her

own.   Mary Almira Eppes was married to Edwin Euler Kidder in Blanco on

Mar 8, 1877.  His mother had come to Texas with her two sons, John and Ed

and bought each of them a farm a few miles up the river.  However, John

did not like Texas and went back to Illinois.  The Kidder family retained

the farm for several generations, but at present there are no living

descendants living in Blanco Co. (Marjorie Kidder Sanford).

                                Fannie: "Blanco Co. History F787:"

William Thomas Kidder was the oldest son of Edwin Kidder and his wife

Mary Almira Eppes Kidder.   He was born Jan 23, 1876 at Blanco.   His

parents came to Blanco with a group of people from Illinois in a wagon

train.  Most of these people settled near each other.  They lived up the

Blanco River about 4 miles.  A school house was built and served as a

Christian Church.  The cemetery near the McKinney school and church

house is where most of these early settlers are buried.  The two story

home of Mary Almira Eppes Kidder's parents still stands (1987).  Will

Thomas Kidder's parents are buried in the McKinney Cemetey.

Fannie  was the daughter of David J. and Sarah Jane (Page) Trainer.

Her grandfather, William N. Trainer was the third settler in Blanco,

coming in 1853.  Fannie's parents were married Sept 3, 1868.  They made

their home on a farm and ranch located on the old Kendalia road.  Fannie

grew up on this place.  She attended school at the country school nearby

called Buzzard Roast.  Then she went to school in Blanco with her

sisters, Annie Mabel and Sarah Elizabeth to finish their education.  In

the summer, Fannie's father hired women to teach his daughters to cook,

sew and all kinds of needlework.  They were  given music lessons by Mrs

Allie Cabiness who taught in Blanco.  They all played the piano well.

Will Kidder courted Fannie Trainer at camp meetings held at the

Tabernacle in Blanco where all denominations held services.  They fell in

love and were married at the home of her parents.  Will and Fannie made

their home in Blanco and lived where the Church of Christ social hall now

stands.  Part of the home still there.  Will owned and worked in his

blacksmith shop located where the Hunter's Inn now is.  Will and Fannie

had ten children: They left Blanco in the middle 1920's to live in El

Paso.  The Trainers were Methodist when they came to Blanco.  David

Trainer, helped build the Methodist church in Blanco.  Later in life, all

of David and Sarah Trainer's family became member of the Christian Church

except one.  The Eppes and Kidder families were members of the Christian

Church.  The older children of Will and Fannie Kidders became members of

the Christian Church and were baptised with their cousins and friends in

he Blanco River at the Rock School House before the Kidders moved to El

Paso.  All ten children grew up and had families of their own except

Horace Durwood.  He was killed in WWII.  Will and Fannie lived in El Paso

until their deaths.

Ruth

I found your posting regarding the family of James and Sarah Isham in Fannin County, Texas and wondered if you are related. I have information on them including the girls' husbands' names, etc., and some of the children.

James and Sarah's third son was EWING (not Erwin as the census taker wrote down) and he was my husband's great-grandfather. The marriage year for James and Sarah is correct because James attested to that in his application for a Mexican War pension - he was also a Texas Ranger and fought in the Civil War.

By the way, the posting under yours lists a Joseph M. Isham marring Mary  Jane Lee but it was Joseph B.F. Isham who married her according to my  records. There is even some information about it on the Fannin County page at GenForum. I plan to e-mail that person next and see if they are related.

I hope to hear from you soon.

This person listed in your genealogy file is my great grandmother. Please verify her father's name. You list it as N. B. Wiggs, but I have

seen another family database that lists it as H. B. Wiggs.  I was wondering if there has been a typographical error.

I have some information on her and her descendants and would share it if you are interested.

Hello, I found your Family Tree Web page.  I am descended from a Rufus Gibbons whose descendants are in Western Ky.  The birth date of your Rufus is appropriate (I have no birth date).  He had one daughter that I know of and her name was Minnie Lee Gibbons.  Do you have any other information that might tell me if this is my Rufus Gibbons?

Thanks,

Ken Ford

Thanks a lot, this is the same person.  Are you sure about his middle initial?  His daughter Minnie Lee Gibbons had a son named Rufus Brent White.  I had assumed that Brent was probably the same middle name for both.  By the way, I have a picture of Rufus Gibbons, his wife and 4 children on my web page at:

I'll look through the information that you sent and let you know if you have any questions.  If you are interested, I'll send you what I have on the descendants of Minnie Lee Gibbons.

Hello again, you are not going to believe this but I met my grandmothers half uncle last night (87 yrs old).  His name is Jewell Gibbons and is the son of Rufus R. Gibbons (a civil war veteran!!).  He says that there are only two living children of civil war veterans in the state of TN.  I'm amazed that there are any living anywhere.  He says that Rufus has 3 wives and 27 children.  He was the 26th child and knows the names of most of his siblings.  He wanted to know who was the oldest living Gibbons descendant in your line.

Just ran across your entry on WorldConnect and would like to know of your connection to John Johnson and Mary Ann Chisum.  They were my third great grandparents and John Johnson is one of my "brick walls".  I note you have his middle initial as "G" so that has given me hope that you know more about him than I have been able to find out.  I shall appreciate hearing from you.  Thanks in advance!

Patrick,

My sincere thanks for your prompt reply and I do mean reply!  I have put your information on a disk so that I may have time to look at all of the information at my leisure.  As a 16-year researcher, I can surely appreciate the time, travel, and work you have put into all this.  My husband accuses me of being a "gatherer" and he is right.  How happy I would be if I would ever sit down and put all I have into my computer the way you have!

I have been to Elijah Chisum's and Lucy's graves outside Sparta.  I have been to the graves of Mary Ann Chisum and John Johnson.  We have been to the FH Library in Salt Lake 6 times, staying as high as a month at a time.  I have been to countless courthouses all over Tennessee and Virginia and Kentucky and gleaned much info, just haven't gotten it all together yet.  Oh if I could only live so long!

Once about 14 years ago, we visited with a Kenneth Anderson in Mercer, Tn. who said he was kin to the Chisums via both sides of his family.  He gave me some really good leads and I thank him yet.  Maybe he is kin to you.

My descent from Elijah is via James Stewart, Mary Ann/John Johnson's daughter, Elizabeth Johnson who married John Turner in 1834 in Hardeman Co., Tn.  They had my great grandmother Lucy Ann Turner who married Eldridge Emberson Click in 1853 in Lamar Co., Tx.; then my grandfather Eldridge Eugene (1866-1954), my father Clyde Stevenson Click (1904-1965).

Thanks again for sending me all this great information.  Genealogically

Yours, Louise Click McPherson (1929-)

Notes for John Simpson Chisum:

One of the owners of the Jingo-Bob Land and Cattle Company.  Settled in Lincoln County, New Mexico and became one of the crucial parties engaged in the New Mexico, "Lincoln County" wars.  Reputedly supported Billy the Kid during these episodes by providing him with supplies and allowing him to hide out on his range.  Died of cancer of the throat. John Wayne played this man in one of his western movies "Chisum".

John Simpson CHISUM, the reputed "cattle king of America" for a number of years, and who was involved in the "Lincoln County Wars" in New Mexico in 1878-79. He was a son of Claiborne C. CHISUM, b. 22 Jun. 1797 in Tennessee, d. 24 Oct. 1857 in Lamar Co., Texas. Claiborne's son, John Simpson CHISUM was born 15 Aug. 1824 in Hardeman Co., TN, died 23 Dec. 1884 in Eureka Springs, Carroll Co., Arkansas, and was buried in Paris, Lamar Co., Texas. John Simpson CHISUM was never married.  The "Dictionary of American Biography, Vol. II," (Chas. Scribner's Sons, NY, 1929) says that Claiborne's name had been "CHISHOLM," and the alteration to CHISUM "is said to date from the time of the Battle of New Orleans," but it does not give any reference for that statement.

John S Chisum married his black slave, Jensie and fathered two children by her--Harriet 1855 and Almeada 1857. He left them well provisioned and cared for at Bonham (then Fort Inglish). Almeada married John Dolford "Bob" Jones of Bonham. Bob was also a Free Black. Source: Fort Worth Star-Telegram June 2, 1996

Pat,

I am also researching the Chisum name.  My name is Wanda Pirtle Cronauer and my ancestor Eliza Pirtle married John Gibbons Chisum and migrated to  KY with Michael Pirtle, III. I have a GEDCOM file of almost 6900 indivuals if you want a copy I can

mail as an attachement.  Let me know.  I am going to add the maternal branches as long as my disk permit.

I printed out the info you uploaded to the Net and will put it in my database.  Perhaps you could send it to me in GEDCOM format so I can

just import it into my Family Tree Maker Deluxe 3.4 software??

Thanks,  Wanda

I've been working on the William Bell/Rebecca Gibbons line and a cousin lent me information from you. I thought you might be interested in looking at the Larmar Co. TX. website, cemeteries, then looking for Gibbons, and Bell. There is a William Rufus Bell, the Rufus is wrong and will be corrected sometime but there is information of John Chisholm Gibbons, and Paris Gibbons m: James Thomas Rountree (Roundtree).

Any John apparently was a very prominent person of Lamar Co.

My line is Thomas Bell & Eleanor Tillery, Thomas Tillery Bell and Mary Holland.

Patrick,

The following excerpts from a transcript of a lawsuit gives the

names of Sarah Westerfield Eppes' parents. Note that her husband's given

name was most often listed as Thomas, but once as John, which was probably

a copyist's error.

File Box W- 76, Mercer Co, KY, Circuit Court Records. James C. WESTERFIELD

vs. P. M. HALE, dec, petition in Equity.

"Plaintiffs state that their maternal grandmother, Nancy HALE,

departed this life in 1856.That Hannah (HALE) WESTERFIELD, their mother,

depart this life in the year 1823 or thereabouts, leaving her husband, John

WESTERFIELD, surviving her, and also the following children and heirs: . .

[names several children]

"Sarah Ann EPPS, formerly WESTERFIELD, was also a child and heir of

John and Hannah WESTERFIELD, married Thomas A. EPPS, and has since departed

this life leaving her said husband and several children and heirs surviving

her, all of whom when last heard from lived in Texas . . . The names and

residences of said Thomas A EPPS  and the children and heirs are wholly

unknown to the plaintiffs. Neither said EPPS or his children have been

heard from for more than 15 years.. . ."

"DEPOSTION OF JESSE H. WESTERFIELD: taken . . .in the town of Barbourville,

Knox Co., KY on the 15 of November 1878.

". . .Sarah Ann WESTERFIELD married a man by the name of John EPPS. . .

Sarah Ann died but can't state where. . . " Thomas EPPS was living at the

time of the death of Sarah Ann and she left some children, but this witness

cannot state whether they are living."

DEPOSTION OF JAMES C. WESTERFIELD:  taken at the law office of John G. EVE

in th town of Barbourville, Knox Co., Ky  Nov 22, 1878.

". . . Sarah Ann WESTERFIELD and her husband, Thomas EPPS, has some

children and moved to Texas shortly after their marriage and he cannot

recollect the names of the children."

Would you mind if I would send a copy of the Eppes descendants to a

descendant of Sarah Westerfield Eppes' brother, John, who lives in Iowa? He

edits a Westerfield newletter and  made a rough draft of a Westerfield book

in 1997 which many of us purchased at cost. Many are trying to help him

correct and add to the file. It is a labor of love on his part. He hopes to

get as many of the Westerfield descendants listed as possible. People from

all over the country are sending information to him, so he may already have

this. But, if he doesn't, I know he would love to have it. He is printing

copies of a revised (1999) rough draft (about 800 pages, I think.) for

those who wish them for what it costs him to print and mail them.

Sincerely,

Barbara

Hello Patrick,

My name is Patricia, I am called Pat.  I have a great-grandmother name Mary Almira Eppes who is a 4 descendant of Edward Eppes and Mary Anderson.  I did not completely compare your chart that you have posted with what I have but I did check some of it and I believe it is the same Edward Eppes and Mary Anderson.  I am in Miles, Texas and my Eppes part of the family was from Blanco, Texas.  They did come here from Virginia.  If you would like for me to send you what I have let me know, it is a very large file.  I will add what you have posted here to what I already have.  If you have more than what you have posted I would appreciate it if you would send it to me.

Thanks

Pat

Hello again Patrick,

Thank you for the file, I did not expect to get so much so soon.  I would like to have all the information you have on the Eppes besides the ascendants of Mary Elmira Eppes.  Here are the descendants of Mary Elmira Eppes that I have.  I got about 50% of it from a book name " Epp, Epps & Eppes" at the Tom Green County Library, San Angelo, Texas.  The information on the stout's I got from my family, the library at Angelo State University, and off the tombstones at Maretta, Texas.  The information on Mary Elmira and Edwin Kidder I got off the tombstones outside of Blanco, Texas.  I still have information that I have not put in my computer yet.  My name is Patricia Anna Harrison-Helms, I am a descendant of Ida Grace Kidder, she was my grandmother.  I have set the type at 8 points so it would not take up so much room.

Thanks Again

Pat
