Notes for Reynard
Anderson:
[Reynard.ftw]
Reynard Anderson is identified as a head
right in the patent of Martin Coale for 300 acres on the south side of the
Great Wicomoco River in Northumberland County on 07/01/1654. In 1650 William Skiffen had been imported to
Northumberland County and as Reynard is recorded to have married Elizabeth
Skiffen (likely an underage daughter at the time of the 1650 importation)
Reynard may have begun his time in Virginia in Northumberland County.
However by 1662 he had become a resident
of the southside Virginia. His name
appears in the Charles City County records and as transcribed by readers takes
on several variant spellings. I have no
indication of where he was born and consideration must be given equally to the
possibility that he came from Europe and/or was born to the Anderson family of
the York River. The name Reynard is
unusual. In English: of Norman origin, derived from a Germanic personal name
composed of the elements ragin advice, decision + hard hardy, brave, strong. In
French, renard (derived from this name) has become the generic name for a fox,
as a result of the popularity of medieval beast tales featuring Re(y)nard le
goupil "Reynard the fox". Cognate: German: Reinhard. (source
ancestry.com)
Reynard probably purchased land near
Bailey's Creek in Charles City County south of the James River around the time
of his marriage in 1662. His purchase
of land rather than patenting it, implies he had resources to pay. However all
the Charles City County deeds have been destroyed so it is not possible to
confirm what lands he might have held while raising his children. The 1663
Bennington power of Attorney mentions Mays and Coleman who are later associated
with lands near Bailey's Creek which flows northeast of Petersburg Virginia.
Just before his death he does obtain a patent in the headwaters of Blackwater
River which reach just short of the Bailey Creek area. It is unlikely he had
enough time to do much with that late acquisition of land. His daughter Frances marries John Herbert
whose plantation was also in this vicinity. It is important to note that his
sons all obtained land by 1704 along Bailey Creek just northeast of current
Petersburg and it is likely that this came from their father's estate. Because the sons received differing shares
of their fathers estate it appears his will was probated but has been lost due
to civil war distruction of records.

I think we have corresponded before. I am looking for Mayes/Mays family
connections. I've been looking over all
this wonderful information on your page.
Thank you so much for posting all of this onto the internet.
About Reynard -- he, John Coleman and John
Mayes were together in the early years and it appears that his family and the
Mayes stayed together for awhile. I
think a daughter of his either was a wife to John Mayes Sr. or to one of his
sons. This is based on 1. the naming
pattern in the Mayes family and 2. the continued proximity between the
families. Right now, what I am
hypothesizing is that John Mayes had sons William who married Mary Mattox, John
Jr. who married a Martha, Henry who married Mary, and maybe James who married
? From one of these sons, two of whom
were deceased by 1700, (or possibly
from a late marriage of John Sr.'s) we have: Matthew who married Elizabeth and
moved to Dinwiddie; Henry who married Elizabeth and moved to unknown; John who
married Julia and moved to unknown. There are also two Daniels, and a James Jr.
I am working on fitting into this equation.
I think that Matthew, John and Henry are
sons or grandsons of a female Anderson.
Matthew Mayes in Dinwiddie lives nextdoor to William Anderson. A James Mayes witnesses John Anderson's will. I would appreciate any imput you could offer
on this guess.
Also -- you may have already noticed this,
but I thought I'd mention that David Anderson of Stafford Co buys land with a
Coale. Reynard Anderson was imported in
1754 by Martin Coale of Northumberland Co.
This could be a clue. I was
especially interested in that they appear to buy land on Passapantanzy Creek
(spelling is off but it is close enough to suggest it may be the same site)
where I find a John Mees (Mays) living in late 1600s, early 1700s in St. Paul's
parish, next to Grigsbys and Fowlke. I am very interested in the Stafford area,
as this is where the Mayes of Amherst Co emigrated from.

Anderson, Henry Prince George County 250 acres
Anderson, John Prince George County 228 acres
Anderson, Matthew Prince George County 349 acres
Anderson, Wm. Prince George County 235 acres
Note that Matthew was holding more land than his brothers and
I believe that this is becasue he was acting as guardian to his nephews, sons
of James Anderson his elder brother deceased before 1704. He was likley holding lands legated to them
by their grandfathers will in 1690.
I have found no evidence that Matthew had a family although he
seems to have acted as guardian for the sons of his older brothers James and
William. It is very tempting to assign the children to the unconfirmed son
James here under the listing for Matthew.
However the 1711 record clearly indicates that Mathew, Jr.'s father was
James and desceased and as Mathew. Sr. lives on he could not be their father.
Dinwiddie County records were destroyed in a 1833/7? fire and Matthew's family
may be lost. A more thorough examination of Brunswick County records might
reveal any children.

Notes for James
Anderson:
[Reynard.ftw]
It is unproven that James Anderson was
an elder son of Reynard born between 1662 and 1668. James was apparently of age 21 before the 1689 record naming the
other sons and therefore was not named.
James is last confirmed to be alive in 1693. James is not listed in the
1704 rent roll and is pressumed deceased before then. I am looking for evidence
that Matthew acted as the guardian of James' infant children because they were
underage at the death of their father.
Matthew posseses an extra 125 or so acres in the 1704 rent roll which I
suspect to be land due to the orphans of James Anderson and does execute deeds
in association with his nephews the sons of James. In tracing the family there
is a greatgrandson in James' branch named Reinard. Because James is not mentioned in the 1689 suit naming the sons
considerable closure could be obtained by dismissing the son James and placing
his children as Matthew's but I have not done so because the 1711 record
specifically identifies Matthew Jr.'s father as James Anderson and that he is
deceased. Matthew, Sr. however, was very much alive, so he could not be the
father of the siblings of Matthew, Jr.
These records naming Coleman and Mayse
clearly associate this James Anderson with Reynard Anderson who was an
associate of Coleman and Mayse in the 1663 time frame in the same vicinity near
Bailey's Creek. In addition this record
clearly identifies Matthew Anderson, Jr. as the son of James Anderson. I have examined the original in the Virginia
State archives and this abstract is correct.
In consideration of the close association of the brother Matthew
Anderson, Sr. with Matthew Anderson Jr.'s brother James along the Butterwood
Creek I leave the possibility open that Matthew acted as their guardian. Notice also that the 1710 record refers to
the "land" of James Anderson while using names for the others.

Notes for Frances
Anderson:
[Reynard.ftw]
Frances Anderson was the daughter of
Reynard Anderson and Elizabeth Skiffen. She would have been born in the mid
1660's just northeast of current Petersburg, Virginia. She married John Herbert and lived with him
on his estate "Puddledock" east of Petersburg.
John Herbert was a wealthy trader and
from his estate Mrs. Herbert is credited with 3925 acres of land in the 1704
rent roll of Prince George County and 1360 acres in Henrico County
After John Herbert's death Frances
married Thomas Cocke secondly and Joshua Wynne thirdly. Her wealth made her a very marriagable
widow.

In Reply to: Re: Peter
Wynne/Winn died 1738 Prince George Co., VA by James R. Marie of 729
I am sorry, but I do
not agree that Peter Wynne married Frances Anderson, based on the following: it
is too time consuming to include all of the info but I shall quote from the
following from AMERICAN GENEALOGIST, VOL. 37 & 38, #149, January 1962. The
article is written by Cameron Allen of East Orange, N.J. He lists five noted
sources, including the WILLIAM AND MARY QUARTERLY 1:8:147-8 (1900).
Briefly: ". . .
The first writer to make the statement that the widow Frances (Anderson)
Herbert married secondly Peter Wynne seems to have reached such a conclusion
from a perusal of this series of facts: John Herbert died 17 March 1704 (i.e.
1704/5); in 1716 Mrs. Frances Wynne was executrix of Herbert's will; Peter
Wynne's wife was named Frances. Mrs. Frances Wynne made her will in 1725;
listing her Herbert children. Each "fact" in this series is just
that; a fact; and yet the conclusion reached therefrom that Mrs. Herbert
married Peter Wynne is greviously mistaken . . . Peter did not lift a finger to
help Frances in the execution of Herbert's will. Then when Frances Wynne made
her will on 16 October 1725, though she carefully named her children, she
carefully avoided mentioning Peter Wynne. This is singular if he was her husband
nor is he mentioned anywhere in the probate of her will 4 March 1726 (1726/27
(Prince George County Virginia Deeds 1713-28 pp. 973-4). Just one year later,
on 11/12 March 1727, Peter Wynne and his wife, Frances deeded 42 acres to
Joshua Woodlief. . .Further, if Mrs. Frances (Anderson) Herbert did marry
Joshua Wynne's son, Peter, she must have been substantially his elder. Her
first husband, John Herbert died 17 March 1704 (1704/5) in the 46th year of his
age. . .In point of fact, chronology would seem to put her one full generation
ahead of Peter. . . There were only three male Wynnes of this family of Charles
City-Prince George of this generation. One of them Robert, died young and
rather assuredly without issue. The next, Thomas, had a wife, Agnes mentioned
in his will. This leaves only Joshua suited to marry Mrs. Herbert, barring the
possibility that she married a Winn from some other county. . . but all of the
records concerning Mrs. Frances Wynne place her in the very neighborhood where
Joshua's children lived. Consequently it is fair to assume that she was of this
family. We do know that Joshua Wynne had a wife, Mary. It seems not unlikely
that Mary (Jones) Wynne predeceased her husband, Joshua sometime between 1707
and 1712 leaving him free to marry Mrs. Herbert. "

Pat, just a note to
let you know that it now appears we have been looking at the wrong man as
marrying the above Frances Anderson, who first married John HERBERT who died in
1704, then briefly to Thomas COCKE who died in 1707, and lastly, not to Peter
WYNNE, but to his father, Joshua WYNNE!
To complicate matters, Peter WYNNE was indeed married to a Frances,
himself, but she was definitely alive after Frances Anderson H.C. WYNNE died in
1726. Ain't genealogy fun? Best wishes, Gene Rooks

Frances Wynne is
mentioned in 1713 showing she married him by then, probably in 1711.
The only name of a
wife for Peter that appears in Prince George records, off an on from about 1713
through 1727, is Frances. Research has
indicated she is not the same Frances Anderson who was the widow of John Herbert. (She married his father, Joshua) The idea that she is a daughter of Col.
Edward Hill is from a deed of a slave to Mary Wynne from the estate of Col.
Edward Hill, but that may be an erroneous assumption, as he gave bequests to
several people not his family.
Frances appears with
her husband Peter as witness to this will:

12 March 1727, one
year later, (than the recorded will of Frances Wynne, widow of John
Herbert) on page 1083 of the same deed
book, Peter Wynne's
wife is examined in private by the court in the case of a deed conveying land
from Peter Wynne and his wife Frances to Joshua Woodleif.
Thus, Peter Wynne's wife Frances is just as
clearly alive in March 1727 and, therefore, cannot be Frances, widow Herbert,
as many Wynne genealogies claim.

Notes for William
Anderson:
[Reynard.ftw]
William Anderson was born near Bailey's
Creek (vicinity of Petersburg, VA) after 1669 in order to be under 21 at the
time of the 1689 record identifying his father as Reynard Anderson.
Reynard Anderson
In Court 02/03/1689
Charles City County
Court Orders 1687-1695, page 276
Judgt. granted Reynard Anderson as
guardian to his four sons Matthew, Wm., John, and Henry Anderson, legatees of
Tho. Symons, dec'd, agst Geo. Downing, Exec. of will of said Symons, for £ 10,
which is given to said sons (50 s to each) by said will. Said Anderson to give
good security.
I have no proof of the family of William
Anderson except that I know he married Mary Ligon from Henrico County records
in 1698 and that some of the land south of Hopewell (owned by the five sons of
Reynard) was passed to a Reynard Anderson and that a John Anderson appears in
the Bristol Parish Register which covered the area near Mawhipponoak Creek. It is likely that he has some children but
as the Dinwiddie County records were all burned in a courthouse fire in 1833/7?
it is not possible at this time to reconstruct his family from county
records. We must hope that we can find
a descendant of his whom has family records.
The Ligon family claims that he died before 1716 and that his wife
remarried to Peter Rowlett. However they are depending upon a deed abstract
that has errors in it. I suspect that
Peter Rowlett in fact married Mary Ligon's mother Mary Ligon.
When his father died in 1690 he received
a legacy of land near Bailey's Creek which he held at the time of the 1704 rent
roll wherein he is listed with his brothers.

Hi Patrick. This is what I have. It is color coded.
. Mary LIGON was born
in 1679 in Henrico County, Virginia. " ..to my daughter, Mary..". She
He was named in document in JAN 1716/17 in Varina Parish, Henrico County,
Virginia. "Document was a statement that Wm. Ligon dec'd left certain land
to be divided between his daughter Mary (now married to Peter Rowlett) and an
unborn child, now 21 years and Lucretia." Note that Mary is shown here as
being under the age of 16....."..to be under the care of my wife until
they are age 21, unless she marry, then only to age 16...".
She was married to
William ANDERSON on 15 JUL 1698 in Henrico County, Virginia. Lic. granted 15
JUL 1698, Henrico County, Virginia.
Shown in 1608-1808
Henrico County, VA, Marriages by Lindsay as being the marriage date as well?
William ANDERSON was born before 1680.
She was married to
Peter ROWLETT (son of Peter ROWLETT and Elizabeth) before JAN 1716. For more
info on the ROWLETT family see GEDCOM in ROWLETT family file. (this includes a
gedcom source unknown which goes into the descendants of Peter Rowlett Sr. in
detail). Peter ROWLETT was born about 1674 in Henrico County, Virginia. He died
in 1748/49. Mary LIGON and Peter ROWLETT had the following children:
John ROWLETT
Thomas ROWLETT I
believe this person has a descendancy that appears to be like this... Thomas
(1700-?) & ?
John Rowlett (1735-?) & Polly Edith
Jackson (1739-?)
William (1760-?) and Jemima Owen
(1765-?)
Nancy (1787-1871)
Joseph ROWLETT.
WIlliam ROWLETT.
Martha Francis ROWLETT
Sarah ROWLETT was born
in 1711 in Henrico County, Virginia.
_____________________________________________
I have found this note
to be in error. William Ligon in his
will left the land to be divided between his daughter Mary and his and wife
Mary's unborn daughter Lucretia. The
1716 abstract that says Mary and Lucretia have agreed to divide the land and
that Peter Rowlet who married Mary consents.
The abstracct has errors in it , saying, "the child she went"
with refering to the daughter when it was the wife. think the abstractor was thoroughly confused by the deed and and
I suspect that the Mary Ligon that Peter married was the mother of Mary and
Lucretia and that she and Peter were consenting in the division of the land.
Clarification of this issue will requuire examination of the original of court
document on page 137 of Henrico Book 1714-1718.

Anderson and Mary Ligon are:

Notes for Henry
Anderson:
[Reynard.ftw]
Henry Anderson was born near Bailey's
Creek just east of current Petersburg, Virginia to Reynard Anderson and
Elizabeth Skiffen. He inherited 250 acres of his fathers lands in 1690 while
still underage and took possession of them before the 1704 rent roll which
indicates that he was born before 1683.

My great-great-great
grandfather was an Edward Anderson of Chesterfield County, Virginia. He married
Amy Ann Gilliam on February 12, 1818. Amy Ann Gilliam was the daughter of
Samuel Gilliam and Susannah Bolling of "Poplar Hill" in Brunswick County.
Edward Anderson and Amy
Ann Gilliam had two daughters, Louisa Roberta Yates Anderson and Anne Gilliam
Anderson. Louisa first married Green Hill of Dinwiddie County and second Joseph
Bentley. Anne married Dr. Edwin Harvie Smith of Dinwiddie County.
I always heard that my
Edward Anderson was a lawyer and a prominent citizen of Chesterfield County.
This is about all my family knows about him because his wife died young, and my
great-great grandmother, Louisa Roberta Yates Anderson Hill, was brought up by
her grandmother, Susannah Bolling Gilliam, in Brunswick County.
Do you have any
information on my Edward Anderson? Thank you.

I do need to make at
least one correction to material I saw on your website. I think that you misidentified the husband
of Judith Anderson, a
daughter of Henry
Anderson, Sheriff of Henrico Co., by his wife Prudence Stratton. I think you called him John Powell Cocke.
(editor's note: John Powell Cocke held a patent adjacent Henry Anderson
Judith's father in central Amelia county and is an apparently undocumented
brother of James Powell Cocke]
Actually, I believe he
was someone else entirely.
From June Court, 1739,
Henrico Co., VA
p. 84, John NAsh and
Brazure Cocke, Gent., securities of Judith Cocke, administrator for the estate
of William Cocke, setting forth they have
cause to believe the
estate would be embezzled, ask to be relieved. Francis Redford, who hath
married said Judith, comes into court and brings John Redford, Gent., and John
Stuart, who give security in administration of estate.
Then, this from the
Cocke family history I mentioned earlier.
from Goochland County
Court May 173?. (Order Book 7, p. 402)
Jordan vs. Cocke. William Cocke, his life time was possessed
of 4 negroes as his own, one of which was a slave named in the declaration in
this suit; William Cocke died sometime about the year 1736 leaving issue 2
children (one was name Judith, by the way), infants, said infants both dying
not more than 8 years old; at death of said infants said negroes descended to
Sarah, wife of Thomas Jordan,
Temperance, wife of Abraham Bailey, Mary, wife of John Redford, sisters
and co-heiresses of said William Cocke and John Burton Jr. son and heir of
Catherine, then deceased, late wife of John Burton, said Catherine being a
sister of said William Cocke. Sarah,
wife of the plaintiff (i.e. Thomas Jordan) in this suit was at the time of her
intermarriage with the said plaintiff, the widow and relict of one William
Cox, and that said
William Cox died before the death of the infants of aforesaid William
Cocke. The defendant in this suit, John
Cox, is son and heir at law to said William Cox by the said Sarah,...etc.
This William Cocke, who
died in Henrico Co. c. 1736 was more than likely the husband of Judith
Anderson, as you can see. They had two
small children who died at an early age.
The widow Judith Anderson Cocke remarried to Francis Redford, probably a
brother of the John Redford who had married William Cocke's sister Mary. There is also some evidence that Judith
Anderson was married to a Stuart prior to her marriage to William Cocke. In any case, the person who wrote the Cocke
history thought her maiden name was Stuart.
This William Cocke and the multiple sisters mentioned earlier were the
children of William Cocke (1670--1717) by Sarah Perrin. William, Sr was the brother of the Thomas Cocke, d. 1707 (wife Mary Brazier,
Frances -----) who was father to my Brazure Cocke. So Brazure Cocke and William Cocke m. Judith Anderson were first
cousins.

Numerous Land Patents have been entered
for the Nottoway area under the name of James Anderson. Some of these, particularily those along the
Little Nottoway River west of current Blackstone may be attributed to James
Anderson of Surry County, son of Thomas Anderson of a different family. Those along Deep Creek north of Blackstone
however are those of this James Anderson and his son James.

Eight children of James Anderson have
been identified. All are named in his
will. The family record appears to be
complete. Elizabeth Anderson, marries
George Bagley,Sr. a neighbor. Two of James' grandsons marry daughters of George
Bagley,Jr. The daughter Mary Anderson
marries a Martin, likely to be George Martin to whom James,II sells land in
1753, 1768 and gives additional land in his will of 1773. The Martin's witness
the will of George Bagley, Sr. The
daughter Mason Anderson marries Peter Knight brother of Charles Knight the
appraiser of James' estate. Charles
Knight is listed close with Elizabeth Anderson, James' widow, in the 1785
Amelia land tax rolls. The daughter Frances Anderson is claimed by
others to have married James Grigg,Sr.
She is listed as deceased in her fathers will. He states that her heirs
should have no part of his estate.
However if she is the child of Elizabeth Ligon she could not have been
born before 1715 or so, she either married a later Grigg or is possibly the
daughter of an earlier wife of James Anderson.
The daughter Elizabeth was also born very early and I suspect as well
that she was a daughter of the first wife if there was one.
The exact date of death is unknown.
The will of James Anderson is filed in
Amelia County, Virginia Will Book 3 on page 36. There is no probate given.
All of the early entries of this book are absent any probate statements
by the court clerk. I suspect that the
entries may be a later (still 18th century) recopy of a damaged book, and that
there may be a single clerk's certification to be found at the end of the
recopied data.
Also mentioned are the negroes York,
Diner, Jerry, and Jesse. It is
important to note the slave named York, as he lives to a generous old age and
provides a viable method for tracking this James through the Amelia and
Nottoway tax rolls. He later
establishes certainty as to the proper identity of Charles Anderson in the tax
rolls. In addition he was given to Elizabeth, widow of James until her death.

The inventory (abridged) and appraisal of
James Anderson's estate appears on page 53 of Amelia Will Book 3. It is dated 10/20/1781 and is notable for
the inflated values assigned to the goods at the time of the revolution. Charles Anderson is listed as the Executor
and Wm Watson, Henry Anderson, and Charles Knight are listed as appraisers.
Notes for Elizabeth
Ligon:
[Reynard.ftw]
Broddie gives the name of James,II wife
as Elizabeth Ligon.
Elizabeth Ligon, who married an
Anderson, is referred to in Genealogies of Virginia Families, Volume III, page
503. It does not give the Christian name of the Anderson and states her birth
date as 1701. She is listed as the
daughter of Thomas Ligon. James Anderson files and persues a claim to her
inheritance which is documented in Barton's Colonial decisions.
Elizabeth probably dies about 1780-81
precipitating the clearing up of James Anderson,Sr. estate. In particular, the name of York appears in
her sons will of 1781 and as York was given unto Elizabeth until her death, I
have assumed that she dies before this time.

Pat, thought I would
provide some feedback to you on my research to date re my research into james
mitchell. As a reminder, I am looking
for parents of the mary ligon who m. peter stainback c1785 & was
investigating to see if she may have been a dau of Robert ligon & sarah
cary Mitchell, dau of james Mitchell.
Robert & sarah were m. 1769 in amelia
Have now looked at all
of abstracted Amelia co records plus some original records.
1. james Mitchell is on
Amelia co tithe lists for 1736, 37, 38, 47, 48, 49, 52, 53, 54, 55, 62, 63, 64
[based on abstracted records] & 1768 [looking at original records].
2. Amelia co records
indicate james Mitchell was in amelia for at least some of the years he was not
on tithe lists; need to look at original lists to see
3. in 1741, james
Mitchell was "of Goochland" when he sold land in Amelia. This fits with tithe lists, but he is not in
any of abstracted Goochland co records
4. in 1768, james
Mitchell was responsible for tithes on Anderson and James Mitchell. Also on tithe list & names adjacent to
james were john Mitchell with slave George and Thomas Mitchell, who was also
responsible for Richard Mitchell.
Will of james Mitchell
shows john & james were his sons.
Believe Thomas was the orphan of walter Mitchell who was bound out in
1758. suspect Richard was also a son of
walter
in 1753 mary, Richard,
and Isaac Mitchell were bound out to charles irby, no parents listed. However, a john Mitchell d c1752. john was m. to ann & in 1752 james
Mitchell sold land that had been patented by john Mitchell. Abstracted record does not say how james
Mitchell obtained title
so, were the Mitchell
kids in 1753 entry children of john?
5. james Mitchell had 2
wives. In 1741 and 1746 wife sarah
relinquished her dower when james sold land.
By October 1747, james Mitchell was m. to ann cocke, dau of james powell
cocke
6. Anderson Mitchell
was living with james Mitchell in 1768 & witnessed marriage bond of Robert
ligon & sarah cary Mitchell. Had
originally thought he was son of james & ann cocke - info you send showed a
cocke-anderson marriage, so that works.
But no longer sure. It is also possible Anderson was son of john &
ann [maiden name unknown] Mitchell
7. do not know where
james [or john d c1752] came from or where james and sarah were married. Interestingly, a miles and henry cary were
living in Goochland in 1730s & 1740s.
but there is no indication either had a dau named sarah or had a dau who
m. a Mitchell. But interestingly, c1800
a cary Mitchell married in Goochland
so . . . suspect sarah
cary Mitchell was dau of sarah, first wife of james Mitchell. They may have been m. in Goochland &
james may have lived with sarah's family for a couple of years in Goochland
about as far as I have
gotten, but since you have collected info on james Mitchell, thought you may be
interested

In 1767 William appears
to have 3 slaves inherited from Dr. John's estate. This same William has 884
acres in 1764 and appears on 2 lists for that year. On Benj. Ward's list with
Dr. John, and list of Wood Jones, probably were property was located. William sold property in 1764
by 3 deeds, at least one property seems to have been from John HERBERT,

In 1767 William appears
to have 3 slaves inherited from Dr. John's estate. This same William has 884
acres in 1764 and appears on 2 lists for that year. On Benj. Ward's list with
Dr. John, and list of Wood Jones, probably were property was located. William sold property in 1764
by 3 deeds, at least one property seems to have been from John HERBERT,
possibly John HERBERT of Chesterfield Co, VA whose Will of 4 - 20 - 1760 said,
."..to brother William ANDERSON ....tract of land in Amelia Co, VA "

Hi Patrick,
I have tracked my
ANDERSON line back to Charles ANDERSON, who bought land in Nottoway Parish,
Amelia Co, VA, in Sep. 1774, on Tom Hitton (Tomihetton) Creek (see Amelia Co, VA Deed Bk. 13, pg 57) Charles moved to Pittsylvania Co, VA about
1802 (see Pittsylvania Co, VA Deed Bk
13, pg 272) and died there about 1827 (Pittsy. Co, VA Will Bk 1, pg115) one DAR
application say he was born " Edinburg, Scotland 5 May 1750 " and
died "Pittsylvania Co, VA 23 Oct 1829 (sic) " Others, say he was born
1752 Nottoway Co, VA
The 1880 Census for
only living sons of Charles, Samuel Richardson
ANDERSON stated his father was born "Scotland", and Edward B.
ANDERSON stated his father was born "England"
I suspect Charles is
the son of John ANDERSON who died in
Raleigh Parish, Amelia Co, VA in 1766. John's inventory, dated 10 Oct
1766, lists slaves - (female) Dol, Pat, Jude & Sarah (male) Jammy, Harry, Seth, Watt, Robin, Ben,
Tom & Bob John willed slaves, Roben, Sarah & Bob to his son, William
and gave rest of his estate to his son, Charles. in the 1778 tithe list
for Nottoway Parish, Amelia Co, VA
there are 2 Charles ANDERSON's listed. One is Charles ANDERSON (James, James,
Reynard) who married Lucy STOKES, and the other Charles, ( I suspect is living
on Tomihetton Creek ) lists slaves - Harry, Jude, Doll, Cate, Patt, Watt, Tom
& Amy
