Descendants of Richard Anderson

Generation No. 1

        1.  Richard6 Anderson  (Robert5, Robert4, Richard3, "York Watershed"2, "Colonial Virginia"1) (Source: (1) William Pope Anderson, Anderson Family Records,  (W. F. Schaeffer & Co., Cincinnati, Ohio; 1936)., (2) William Pope Anderson, Anderson - Overton, A Continuation of Anderson Family Records (1936) & Early Descendants of William Overton & Elizabeth Waters of Virginia & Allied Fa,  (Cincinnati, Ohio; 1945.)., (3) C. G. Chamberlayne, The Vestry Book of St. Paul's Parish, Hanover  County, Virginia 1706-1786,  (Clearfield Company, Inc.; Genealogical Publishing Co., Inc., Baltimore, Maryland 1999).) was born Abt. 1673 in New Kent County, Virginia, and died Aft. 1723 in Hanover County, Virginia.  He married Charity Pouncey (Source: C. G. Chamberlayne, The Vestry Book of St. Paul's Parish, Hanover  County, Virginia 1706-1786,  (Clearfield Company, Inc.; Genealogical Publishing Co., Inc., Baltimore, Maryland 1999).), daughter of Anthony Pouncey.  She was born Abt. 1680 in New Kent County, Virginia, and died Aft. 1756 in Hanover County, Virginia.

Notes for Richard Anderson:

Richard's existence is derived from St. Paul parish precessioning records and the 1704 rent roll. He is identified in the St, Paul's parish vestry book as responsible for the cures of two different individuals so I am assuming he was considered a doctor.

Curiously I have found no patents or deeds for him but he is listed as a land holder in the precessioning records..  He survived for a significant period in the St. Paul Parish precessioning records and it is possible that he had purchased a plantation and never moved from it.  He is superceded in those records by his widow Charity Anderson.  It is possible that his widow is the Charity Anderson listed as a daughter of Robert Anderson by Edward L. Anderson and others.  He lived in a precinct defined separate from his bothers but within one plantation of his brother Matthew.

Notes for Charity Pouncey:

Charity supercedes Richard in the St. Paul's parish precessioning rolls. It is possible and now I think likely that she was Charity Pouncey.  In the 1731 precessioning roll she is co-resident in the precinct with Anthony Pouncey.

This record identifying her as Mrs. clearly indicates she was a widow as she is listed in the precessioning rolls and if she was single she would be a Miss.

Schaeffer & Co., Cincinnati, Ohio; 1936).) was born Bef. 1704 in New Kent County, Virginia, and died August 1781 in Louisa County, Virginia.  He married Elizabeth Holland.  She was born Abt. 1705, and died Bef. 1796 in Louisa County, Virginia.

Notes for Pouncey Anderson:

Pouncey Anderson was believed by William Pope Anderson to be a grandson of Robert Anderson I, but no researcher to date has been able to prove from which son.  Of the six candidate fathers of the second generation, Robert, John, Matthew, Thomas, Richard and David we actually only know the children of Thomas from his 1757 will in Albemarle. Other evidence suggests the children of Robert, John, Matthew and David and therefore I have assigned Pouncey to Richard because Pouncey named a son Richard.  In addition the Holland family and Pouncey family precessioned land in 1731 and 1739 in St. Paul's parish adjacent Richard Anderson, whom I believe to be the son of Richard Anderson senior.  An examination of the widow of Richard Anderson, Charity Anderson, should be made to see if she was a Pouncey, in 1731 St. Paul's parish vestry book precessioning records she is listed in a small precinct wtih Anthony Pouncey.  Charity was a common Christian family name for the Pounceys.

Col. Richard Anderson was a Justice, Burgess and Colonel in the Va. Militia. His Estate Inv. dated 1819, Will Book 6, p. 121.

It appears from the records that Col Richard Anderson and his second wife Caty Fox, moved to Hanover Co. Va prior to 1788. The Louisa Co. Va. records indicate that he had lived near his father Pouncey Anderson, who lived on Cubb Creek. Anderson's Mill was the same later called Timberlake's and a short distance form South Anna Meeting House, which was built on land that belonged to the Timberlakes.

Your patander73 database on rootsweb shows Frances Anderson b.1753 m. Christopher Holland, but does not follow that line any farther. I strongly suspect that Frances and Christopher were the grandparents of my wife's g- grandfather, Williamson Epps Price, b. 18 Feb 1810 in Prince Edward.

There is a Marriage Bond in Prince Edward wherein Christopher gave his consent for his dau, Sally, to marry Samuel Price, whose father, Williamson Price of Halifax, also gave his consent. We have not been able to definitely establish that Samuel and Sally were Williamson Epps'  parents. I have seen in some other source that Sally's name was Sarah Hudson Holland.

Will greatly appreciate any relative information you may possibly have.

You sent this info a few weeks ago.

I was searching the net tonight and run across this interesting map of Louisa Co. Creeks 1745.

I have attached a 1745 map showing where Lickinghole was.

Interesting how close it is to Albemarle Co.

I wonder if Robert Anderson may be David;s father.

Pat

We have found your email very interesting and have learned much we didn't know before by researching your data.

I have tried to summarize our research, I hope I will not confused you with our data and theories.

[snip]

1. We thought you had it figured out Pat and we went to work on your data..

2. But after several days of research this is what we turned up.

3. We can't find a birth date for Pouncey but it seems to us your date of before 1704 is probably close since he was patienting land in

1724.

4. Pouncey's wife's father Michael Holland's will reconizes Pouncey as his son-in-law when it was written 10 Oct 1746.

5. We found two dates for Pouncey's son Michael to be born. 1735 and 1744.

6. Sarah Meriweather who is Michael Anderson's wife was born 26 Nov 1746 so she would have been born after our David who was

married to Judith. David was probably born 1740-1745. So Sarah  could not have been David's mother.

7. We even considered that Pouncey may have had a son named David that could have died before Pouncey wrote his will in 1781.

Thus the son David may not have been mentioned in the Pouncey will.. We checked and our David was alive when Pounceys will was

written, so our theory didn't hold up.

8. After our research we feel even stronger than ever that our David  is closely related to Pouncey for the following reasons.

a.. Pouncey has a grandson (by son Richard) named Shandy. A very unusual name

b.. We have a Shandy Anderson in our Garrard Co. Kentucky Andersons

c.. We have a Pouncey Anderson in our Garrard Co. Kentucky Andersons

d.. We did find these people mentioned in David and Judith's wills in Pounceys family.

a.. Thomas Shelton married Ciecly Dabney. Pouncey's granddaughter through his daughter Judith Anderson Dabney.

b.. Capt. Joseph Shelton is the brother to Thomas Shelton.

c.. One of the Elizabeth Johnsons in the will is Pouncey's granddaughter Elizabeth Dabney who married Rev Christopher Johnson. This Elizabeth Johnson is Judith Anderson Dabney's daughter.

9. The end result was that Michael and Sarah Meriweather Anderson were of the same generation (+/- 5 years) of our David and Judith Anderson  so Michael and Sarah couldn't be David's parents.

10. I do feel however from looking at all these dates and the past several days of research that Pouncey and David's father were most likely brothers.

11. We feel below is our best clue to date since David died in 1781 "just  before the peace". (end of the Revolutionary War) His will also speaks of  a "Tickler" which is a reminder book for merchants.

Page I of BRITISH MERCANTILE CLAIMS

Claims of Robert Jardine [pp. 87-91]

[Pp. 88-89] David Anderson, Louisa. There were two persons of this name in Louisa at the time the debt was contracted whose circumstances were very different. (1)David Anderson, son of David, of Hanover generally annexed the addition of Jr. to his name, from which circumstance it is presumable he was not the subject of this claim. At the peace and for many years afterward he possessed a considerable estate, was engaged in the mercantile business and was in high credit. About 1791 he died and left his estate much involved. In a few years before his death be became bound for several of his friends as security in the shipment of tobacco and importation of goods from William Anderson & Company of London, which produced such embarrassment in his affairs as to render his estate unequal to the payment of his own debts and other engagements. The other (2)David Anderson was the son of Robert Anderson of Louisa and was accustomed to sign his name without any addition. He died Shortly before the peace so absolutely insolvent that no Person thought it an object to take administration on his estate. He was engaged in the retail business before the war on a small scale in which line it is probable this debt was contracted.

David Bullock, Esq., attorney

Comment by Ray Anderson:

The above (2)David, son of Robert, sounds like our David.

He died "just before the peace" and in our David's will we find this:

"At a court held for Louisa County on Monday ye 8th day of October 1781. This will was this day exhibited in open court and proved by the oaths of Elizabeth Johnson and Elizabeth Johnson two of the witnesses thereto and by the court ordered to be certified and at a court held for this County at Louisa the 12th day of November 1781 Joseph Shelton and Perrin Farrar who were left Exor. To this this day certified under their hands that did not think it proper to qualify as Exors. to the will."

Estate Appraisal:

These items are among David's possessions:

---cut----

Jug & bottles 6/. flask 1/3, 2 Ticklers 2/. lott of books 15/--1.4.3

2 pocket books 3/. 1 slay 4/6. loons 5/. spun flax 1/3 -------0.13.9

---cut---

Pat

While I don't feel we have solved the mystery, we know so much more because of your email. Sometimes it's a long process of elimination. I'm glad you got us fired up, we were getting stale and didn't know where to look next. We now have some of the people identified which were in the will. I feel there is no question there is a close link somewhere to Pouncey. Thank you for your effort. Don't give up on us.

Again, we deeply appreciate your interest in the Virginia Andersons.

Dear Pat: [snip] David Anderson who married Judith. His will is in Louise Will Book 2 p.392 and names his wife Judith, sons John, Charles, Archelus and David. His four daughters are named Mary, Susannah, Sarah & Elizabeth. Executors were Capt. Jos. Shelton and Perrin Farrow. The will was recorded 8 Oct 1781.

Judith Anderson became his administratrix and posted a bond for 200,000 pounds. This was recorded and dated 12 Nov 1781.(Louisa Will Book 2, p.392 - yes, same page as will.) Strangely or not, a Robert Anderson was both security with Zachariah Stanley and signed the record. Whether this was Robert of Louisa or Robert of Hanover I do not know. As you  know Robert of Louisa died before 9 Apr 1782 when David Anderson "Junr." posted bond as administrator of Robert's estate.(Louisa Will Book 2 p. 447)

The appraisal of David, who married Judith, was dated  9 Feb 1782 amd recorded 14 Jul 1782. (Louisa Will Book 2 p. 447; yes, same page as bond.) The estate was appraised at L360-8-10. I've only seen one other bond so high and to make no error the clerk had written it in by hand as well as in figures. That estate, too, came in at a much lower value. (Bonds were usually twice the expected size of the estate.)

David, son of Robert and Frances, died before 14 Sep 1785 when his brother John Anderson became administrator of his estate. (Louisa Will Book 3 p. 113)

Surname: Anderson, Adams, Parrish, Lawrence, Rigsby, Sampson

I just returned from Richmond VA were I did research in the Virginia State Library and Archives.

I have two sites which have Kin tied to Hanover Co. VA.

Site # 1

has scanned documents for Hanover, Louisa, and Goochland COs VA.

"Anderson Family Records, Where Are The Missing Links"

http://www.fortunecity.com/victorian/brambles/367/

Many other surnames also appear here.

Site# 2

Relates to decendants of David Anderson (d.1781) and wife Judith ____?____ (maybe Johnson or Lacy). Our Anderson Lineage (I believe) were tied to Hanover Co. Includes LAWRENCE Lineage from this area of VA as well.

I hope this will be a help to you and us trying to find where David Anderson (d1781) and Judith ____?____ fit into their families.

This is our brick wall:

David and Judith had the following Children.

John

Charles

**Archelus ANDERSON married Elizabeth PARRISH

David ANDERSON married Polly

Mary ANDERSON

Sarah ANDERSON married John LAWRENCE

Susannah ANDERSON married Henderson LAWRENCE

Elizabeth ANDERSON

** My 4G Grandparents

Archelus ANDERSON was born 27-JAN-1766 in Louisa CO

Virginia and he died 20-AUG-1835 in Garrard County,

KY at 69 years of age. Archelus is the son of David

Don't worry about any confussion Pat. We're just glad someone who has as much Anderson knowledge as you is trying to find some of the

missing links.

We do think we are related to Pouncy in some way. A cousin in our line Hazel Novotni, whom has done the most research, feels he is a

uncle or cousin.

I will pass this on to her daughter, she may have more insite than I do. I'm still in the stage where all the christian Anderson names run

together when I try and sort them out, but I'm getting better at hanging a handle on each one to keep them seperated from the rest.

One of the surnames, for Judith, I've been looking at is Stanley. We think our grandfather and David and Judith's son Archelus was named after Judiths side of the family. In the transcripts of wills for Davis and Judith one is signed, Judith Anderson (her mark) Robert Anderson (seal), and Zachariah Stanley (seal).

A while back some Stanley family members posted some inforation on one of the data bases. There was quite a few Judiths and Archelus's

in that family line during the time period.. When I contacted the Stanley family I could find no matches. They had some issues of a brother disowned for marrying out of his faith, but the brother was too young to be Judith's father. Hazel still clings to the Johnson and Lacy theory for Judith's surname. I also still think they are still a good possibility.

I don't know if I mentioned before but I did see a document, at the Virginia State Library,  that David and Judith were in "Capt John Whites tax district". I can't find the document if I made a copy of it.

The repeated useage of the Christain names in the Anderson line is amazing but it sure has complicated sorting all these families out.

With us West Texas Andersons this pratice continued through my Grandfathers line whom was born in 1889, and a few in the next generation after his were also named according to family tradition.

Thank you for your efforts and don't worry about any confussions.

Ray

Was pleased to see your posting on genforum, I've been searching around and have run into a lot of the ancestral names of Mary Lightfoot Anderson, but couldn't tie down anything earlier than Richard Anderson and Mary Johnson.

Anyway, this is a big help to me. Now I can focus on other branches. Just in case you should run into something, James W. Green (above) b 1825 VA, d 1867 Richmond, is as far back as we know, and I'm shut down on him until I stumble on something or hire a researcher.

Was lucky to have an unusual name to keep an eye out for. I monitor the Woodson forum, and have been keeping an eye out for Lightfoot. Got lucky.

If you need more, let me know.

Thanks.

Just found your web page on Anderson. I descend from Pouncey and Elizabeth Holland (d/o Michael Holland) Anderson. I have printed out the 20 page Anderson's and will go over it good. Sure would like to have a download of this to put on my computer if that is possible?

Believe I can add a little to what you have. It is so extensive and really good.

Another interest I have in this Anderson line is: The early Ambrose Joshua Smith that lived in Hanover/Louisa Co's VA was closely associated with the Pouncey Anderson family. I have never found a connection but think it possible that he married an Anderson?? Her maiden name was Judith.

Descendant of Pouncey's (Elizabeth Dabney m. Christopher Columbus Johnson and moved to Spartanburg District, SC)

I will be happy to download you what I have on the Anderson family.

Hello Patrick,

I have been very impressed with your work on the Anderson family history; one part of my family that I have been trying to figure out is related to your Andersons.  My major Anderson line goes from my grandparents, Fannie Barbour Anderson/ Frederick Harvey Mellor, to John Gray Anderson/ Fannie Meriwether Davis to Richard Woodson Anderson/ Philippa Pendleton Gray to William Anderson/ Mary Godwin Woodson to Matthew Anderson/Elizabeth Anderson to David Anderson/ Elizabeth Mills to Capt Robert Anderson/ Mary Overton to Robert Anderson/ Cecilia Massie to Richard Anderson b. 1618 and to Richard Anderson b. 1585.

Then there are the 2 other Anderson lines that come into the first one at varoius points; mother always thought they were connected somehow, but could never find the right clues or documents to prove it.  Thank you for the information on you web page!  I have also been emailing "cousin" Ray Anderson, who forwarded to me your new "Descendants of John Pouncey".  One of my other Anderson lines is the Pouncey Anderson/ Elizabeth Holland and Col. Richard Anderson/ Mary Johnson "loop" that leads down to the Elizabeth Anderson who married David Anderson; the other is also from Pouncey Anderson/ Elizabeth Holland and Col. Richard Anderson/ Mary Johnson??/ Catherine Fox?? but it leads down to the daughter Mary "Polly" Johnson?? or Lightfoot?? Anderson who married John Woodson, Jr., and had the Mary Goodwin Woodson who married William Anderson!!!  We are trying to figure out if the two daughters of Col. Richard Anderson, Elizabeth and Mary, are full sisters or half-sisters.  It seems to depend highly on which source one reads, as does the correct full name for Mary.  The Historical Geneology of the Woodsons and Their Kin geneology book and the DAR (on several applications) have her as Mary Lightfoot Anderson.  Several books have a granddaughter of hers named Mary Lightfoot Anderson....... named after her???  The books can't seem to agree, either, on which wife of Col. Richard Anderson was her mother: Mary Johnson or Catherine Fox.  One interesting fact seems to be that Frances Lightfoot was Catherine Fox's grandmother.  We can't find any documents to solve this great mystery.  Have you come across anything in your research on the Anderson group???  Confusing seems to be an understatement for this family, so far.  You seem to have solved a lot of Anderson mysteries; we are hoping you can solve one more!!

Please let me know if any of my info on Andersons more recent then Matthew Anderson would be of interest to you.  I have quite a bit on the siblings of my more recent ancestors; W.P. Anderson got a lot of this part of the family confused or left people out altogether.  Maybe he just gave up at that point!!

Evelyn, very interested to see your info regarding David and Judith. I have only very sketchy info regarding them. Was really interested to see you have birth and death dates. I descend from their son Archelus and his wife, Elizabeth Parrish, then through their son, Thomas Anderson and his wife, Mary Polly Payne. Thomas' daughter, Eliza, m. my gg grandfather, Benjamin Routon.

I have info on Archelus, some on Susannah and Sarah, but that is all. Would love to know more.
