Descendants of Richard Anderson

Generation No. 1

        1.  Reverend Richard4 Anderson  (Richard3, "York Watershed"2, "Colonial Virginia"1) (Source: Library of Virginia, Virginia Land Office Patents and Grants,  (http://198.17.62.51/collections/LO.html), "Electronic.") was born 1618 in Great Britain, and died Aft. 1657 in Gloucester County, Virginia.  He married ?.  She was born Abt. 1620, and died Aft. 1645 in Gloucester County, Virginia.

Notes for Reverend Richard Anderson:

Richard Anderson embarked for Virginia aboard the ship "Transport" in July 1635. The ships manifest says he was 17 therefore he was born in 1618. However Richard Anderson, age 30, embarked for Virginia in the "Truelove de London" in 1635. and  there is no confident way of proving which is this man.

York County Will & Deed Books

1/25/1646/7    Richard Anderson, Clerk mentioned in York County.

2/18/1647/8    Richard Anderson witnesses the will of Nicholas Dale and proves same in court.

The identification of Richard as a Clerk means that he was what we now call a minister.  The church in Colonial Virginia was under the authority, but hardly supervision or control, of the Bishop of London, Church of England.  As minister he would have been considered a sober young man and of good quality to be a witness to wills. York County at this time included both the south and north banks of the York River. Nicholas Dale had settled North of the York River in 1638 with Ann his wife near Allens Creek. Reverend Richard Anderson's residence was therefore along the north bank of the York River at Gloucester Point across from current Yorktown, Virginia. This is the same location as the alleged brothers John and Thomas settled. In 1651 the north bank of the York River was taken from York County and formed into Gloucester County.

Va Patents

Richard Anderson

1654 imported to James City County East of Chickahominy River

One was eligible for a headright upon arriving in Virginia if you were above 10 years of age.  The headright qualified you for receipt of 50 acres of land granted by the governor of the Colony of Virginia acting for the King. Headrights were negotiable and it is possible that Richard sold or transfered the headright he had never claimed in 1635; or as was common at the time Virginia gentlemen made one or two trips back to England on merchantile or family affairs and earned an additional headright upon their return to Virginia.

York County Will & Deed Books

10/26/1657     Mr. Richard Anderson listed in Estate settlement of Henry Lee

His continued identification as Mister implies that he was still a Cleric. Henry Lee had arrived in York County in 1649.

Despite the claims of descent from Richard Anderson, no one has written much about Reverend Richard Anderson. Although some of the New Kent Robert Anderson family suggests that they are descended from this man I have found no record of his descendants.  He is, by circumstance found in residual Gloucester County records, likely the father of the Richard Anderson and William Anderson who appear in the 1660-1690's in Gloucester, New Kent and King & Queen Counties sequentialy formed northwest of the York River.  It is possible that the Richard and William Anderson of that region are sons of this man but it is unproven.  All or any one of them may be sons of his alleged brothers or have independently immigrated.

Hello Mr. Anderson:

I am a reporter at The Baltimore Sun newspaper and also an author and historian. I am currently working on an article that will run in Smithsonian Magazine next spring. The article is centered around a famous horse race held in colonial Virginia. It was held on December 5, 1752 at something called Anderson's Race Ground, in Gloucester, VA. I came across your Anderson geneology Web site and wondered if you might have information about the race ground, as many top race tracks of the day were named after the large plantations or estates on which they rested, so Anderson's may well have been on Anderson property.

Any help with information or sources would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you,

John Eisenberg

Notes for ?:

There are some allegations that this Richard Anderson married Mary Spencer, however my checking has revealed that Mary Spencer married a Richard Anderson of early Colonial Philadelpia, PA.

Children of Richard Anderson and ? are:

+      2                 i.    William5 Anderson, Sr., born Abt. 1640 in York County, Virginia; died Aft. 1685 in New Kent County, Virginia.

+      3                ii.    Richard Anderson, Sr., born Abt. 1642 in York County, Virginia; died Aft. 1714 in King and Queen County, Virginia.

Generation No. 2

        2.  William5 Anderson, Sr. (Richard4, Richard3, "York Watershed"2, "Colonial Virginia"1) (Source: Library of Virginia, Virginia Land Office Patents and Grants,  (http://198.17.62.51/collections/LO.html), "Electronic.") was born Abt. 1640 in York County, Virginia, and died Aft. 1685 in New Kent County, Virginia.  He married ?.  She was born Abt. 1645, and died Aft. 1684 in New Kent County, Virginia.

Notes for William Anderson, Sr.:

The Anderson families of the York River Basin have been written about by William Pope Anderson in the 1930's who was generally more careful about what he claimed than other writers.  However he made no reference to this William Anderson.  From Virginia records and Some of W.P. Andersons notes it is obvious that there were coincident families with Robert Anderson headed by Richard and William and they all moved into the area that broke up into New Kent, King William & King & Queen Counties moving upstream from Gloucester County along the north bank of the York River.  William moves up the Poroptank River along the Rappahanock Road and the fact that I cannot attach any of the Hanover, King William or King & Queen County Andersons to him suggests that he continued north, rather than west and his family is to be found on the south bank of the Rappahanock River.  There is a William Anderson, likely to be his son in the Christ Church Parish register of Middlesex County, Virginia and Caroline County records of the 1700's reveal the presence of William Andersons that may descend from this man.

1685 adj. Richard Davis at Rappahanock Road

The Rappahanock Road was probably the predecessor to Virginia Route 17 and William Anderson's land fell between this road to the northern Counties and the Poroptank River which formed the border between Gloucester and King WIlliam Counties.  It is likely that he owned land on both sides of the river and county line.  Gloucester County records were lost in an 1820 fire and it is possible that additional information would have been available on him from them.

Children of William Anderson and ? are:

+      4                 i.    William6 Anderson, Jr., born Abt. 1667 in Gloucester County, Virginia; died April 07, 1722 in Christ Church Parish, Middlesex County, Virginia.

5                ii.    Henry Anderson (Source: National Society of the Colonial Dames of America in the Commonwealth of Virginia., Parish Register of Christ Church, Middlesex County, Virginia from 1653 to 1812,  (Richmond, VA: Christ Church,1897. (found on ancestry.com)), "Electronic."), born Abt. 1675 in Gloucester County, Virginia; died October 24, 1717 in Christ Church Parish, Middlesex County, Virginia.

6               iii.    John Anderson (Source: National Society of the Colonial Dames of America in the Commonwealth of Virginia., Parish Register of Christ Church, Middlesex County, Virginia from 1653 to 1812,  (Richmond, VA: Christ Church,1897. (found on ancestry.com)), "Electronic."), born Abt. 1680 in Gloucester County, Virginia; died November 29, 1721 in Christ Church Parish, Middlesex County, Virginia.

+      7               iv.    Thomas S. Anderson, born Abt. 1685 in Middlesex County, Virginia; died February 24, 1726/27 in Christ Church Parish, Middlesex County, Virginia.

        3.  Richard5 Anderson, Sr. (Richard4, Richard3, "York Watershed"2, "Colonial Virginia"1) (Source: William Pope Anderson, Anderson Family Records,  (W. F. Schaeffer & Co., Cincinnati, Ohio; 1936).) was born Abt. 1642 in York County, Virginia, and died Aft. 1714 in King and Queen County, Virginia.  He married Caty Hansford Abt. 1673, daughter of John Hansford and Elizabeth ?.  She was born Abt. 1650 in York County, Virginia.

Notes for Richard Anderson, Sr.:

The Anderson families of the York River Basin were written about by William Pope Anderson who was generally more careful about what he claimed than other writers.  From Virginia records and Some of W.P. Andersons notes it is obvious that there were coincident families with Robert headed by Richard and William and they all moved into the area that broke up into New Kent, King William & King & Queen Counties.

It is my speculation that this Richard Anderson was a son of Reverend Richard Anderson of Gloucester Point.  William Pope Anderson inserted the family tree in his book without comment on what the association might be. Refer to "Anderson Family Records" by William Pope Anderson, Cincinnatti, Ohio, 1936. Although this book is primarily about Robert Anderson of New Kent, see the data in the back of the book about the Richard Anderson family of King & Queen County. Edward L. Anderson believed the King & Queen County Richard Anderson to be the son of Robert Anderson, Sr. but my examination of Virginia records and maps have clearly indicated that this is not so.

Gloucester County included the entire north bank of the York River in 1651 and had been formed from York County.  While it is possible that this next patent was granted to the Reverend Richard Anderson, it is my experience that young men in Virginia with assets usually obtained their own patent upon reaching the age of 21.

from the VA Patents

1693 Richard Anderson adj. Thomas Vicaries at Poroptank Creek

This record placing Richard near Poroptank creek places him close to William Anderson and distinctly away from the Robert Anderson family.  This is in the area that just a few years before was Gloucester County and the Poroptank creek leads inland northwest from the York River.  New Kent was formed from the western part of Gloucester county in 1654.  Later King & Queen County was formed from the upper portion of the lands west of the Poroptank and this Richard Anderson ends up in King & Queen County.  Thomas Vicars obtained his patent in Gloucester County on 2/16/1665/6 for 650 acres along the Rappahanock Path.

Notes for Caty Hansford:

Caty's surname is unknown.  However it was common practice in colonial Virginia to name a son with a given name the same as the surname of his mother, thus it is likely that Caty was Catherine hansford.  Richard Hansford has a 12/22/1651 patent in Chiskiak region of Charles River County (later York County) fro the importation of John and Elizabeth Hansford.  John Hansford and Elizabeth Hansford patented by 1653 950 acres in Gloucester County on the north side of the narrows of the Mattaponi River however tis was deserted by 1657 an repanted to others. On 12/13/1658 John Hansford patented 850 acres in York County near the first Hansford Patent.

Children of Richard Anderson and Caty Hansford are:

+      8                 i.    Margaret6 Anderson, born Abt. 1679 in New Kent County, Virginia.

+      9                ii.    Richard Anderson, Jr., born 1681 in New Kent County, Virginia; died Bef. 1767 in King and Queen County, Virginia.

10             iii.    Mary Anderson, born Abt. 1683 in New Kent County, Virginia.  She married Richard Cottrell.

From the Journal of Samuel Seay, born April 12, 1760, Amelia County, Virginia, Revolutionary veteran, died in Kentucky about 1824.

This Journal is Registered file 9358, attached to application of Mary "Polly" Grundy Seay for a widow's pension for Samuel Seay's Rev service.

"The year 1787 Francis Anderson departed this life November 9th."

I found this journal in an old file.  I have no idea what quarterly, book or magazine it came from, except that it's VOL XII, No. 1. pages 25 & 26.    Two pages of births, deaths & other interesting events in Amelia County, Virginia and Kentucky.   This for your information.

Pat: In trying to find documentation that  Mary Weldon was the mother  of Anne Pauline Anderson my information is from :Wm.and Mary Quarterly,Oct. 1921 Volume One ,Series Two,page 216,where Addie L. Booker is attempting to get into the DAR. there she states that" Edith Pitts married ---------Weldon, their daughter,Mary Weldon married--------- Anderson, and their daughter, Ann Pauline Anderson, married William Powell---". This Addie  is named after my great grandmother, Addie A Booker Latimer.I dont want to complicate it further than that just now. Also  in a history of Saline County (Missouri 1910) on page 855, it states "Her grandfather, Anderson Powell, was a Virginian, highly esteemed by all who knew him and a man of much more than ordinary intelligence and influence." The "Her" here is my gr grand-mother, Marha A Powell Booker. So as you can see my information is scanty, and the message I posted was based strictly on the above information. So as to actual proof, well you see what I have, My computer had to be reformated  just a few days ago, and thus far I have been unable to get my scanner and printer up and running, otherwise I would have sent copies.

I ran across your web page and was hoping that you could help me or at least point me in the correct direction.  I am not a direct Anderson descendant that I am aware of, but rather a Haley descendant.

In tracing my Haley's, I have run across some Anderson's.  If you can assist me in filling the blanks or corrections, I would be most grateful.  Here is what I have.  It is not much so sorry I am limited on the data I have.

Read your letter in Genforum and was very interested in your information. Concerning the John Haley that married Mary Anderson, daughter of Richard Anderson. You referenced the book, Anderson Family Records, (W. F. Schaeffer & Co., Cincinnati, Ohio; 1936. Would that book have any more information on John Haley? There are a number of Haleys, myself formost among them, who would appreciate any information that you might be able to supply.

In this source on page 122 William Pope Anderson quotes 2 letters he received from Miss Katharine K. Adams which she received from Joseph Banister Anderson. Joseph is quoted as saying that he had in his possession hand written records of his father Joseph Eggleston Anderson and his grandfather Thomas Anderson 1815-1792 and his great grandfather Richard Anderson d. 1796. Pat,

Yes I was able to find the book but it didn't add any other info than what you had given me.

Here is what was sent to me:

The will of Mary Kirbyt was recorded in Halifax Co., VA, Bk 19, p. 98,  dtd 1-28-1836, mentions "dear and beloved sisterm Orpha Hamlin, wife  of John Hamlin"; three other sisters, Esther Farmer, Sarah Ferguson  and Edith Anderson.

Will of Henry B. Kirby, recorded in same cty, Bk 11, p. 229, dtd 12-7-1817 mentions: sons, Obediah, Jeremiah and Richard Kirby; the heirs of daughter, Oprha Hamlin; son, Hezekiah; Sarah Orpha Hamlin; Mary Edith Anderson and Mary Kirby;  Joel, a son of Jeremiah Kirby; and grandson, Jams Kirby, son of Richard Kirby.

Richard Kirby married Esther Anderson, 3-6-1798, Halifax Co

Richard Kirby married Alice Anderson, 4-21-1791, Halifax Co

Jane Foster married Richard Anderson, 3-4-1761, Amelia Co., VA, Thomas Foster, bondsman

Jeremiah Kirby married Esther Anderson, 3-6-1798, Halifax Co. VA

John Ferguson married Sarah Anderson, 1-8-1789, Halifax Co., VA

Gregory Jarratt married S. Anderson ,11-5-1817, Halifax Co., VA

Joseph Kirby married Orpha Anderson, 12-19-1786, Halifax Co.

In Wilson Co., TN, Quarterly Ct, 1829-1832, 7-2-1830, p. 190'''

Petition of Richard Kirby and his wife, Allis, formerly Allis Anderson; Jerry Kirby and his wife, Esther; Jerry Miller and his wife, Orpha; Joseph Ferguson and his wife, Sally;  Richard Anderson; William Anderson, children and heirs of MEAD ANDERSON, decd; and George Jarrott and his wife, Sally; Joseph Phillips and his wife, Frances; Joel and Moses Anderson; Harman Miller and his wife, Judith; Leonard Fitzgerald and his wife, Sally; John Borrum and his wife,  Polly; and Richard Kirby, children and heirs of Orpha and Joseph Kirby, formerly Orpha Anderson, decd' and John Furgurson and his wife, Sarah; John Hamlen and his wife, Orpha; Anna, Orpha, Mary and John Anderson, children and Edy Anderson, said Edy being a child of Polly Kirby, formerly Polly Anderson, who sue by their guardian, MEADES  KIRBY; and Jeryr, Richard and Kiah Kirby, children of Henry B. Kirby and his wife, Polly, decd; formerly Polly Anderson; heirs and legal representatives of Orpha Anderson, Polly Kirby and MEADS ANDERSON, who were the children of RIchard Anderson, decd; versus Richard Anderson, administrator of Jane Anderson, decd.  It appears  that Jane Anderson was the widow of Richard Anderson, decd, who died in the state of VA about the year 1797, and that after the death of  her said husband, she received the 1/3 part of his estate and her dower; that the property she then received should at her death be returned to the estate of her husband Richard Anderson, to be divided among his heirs equally; the receipt of her share was dated 9-28-1797;  it appears that after Jane Anderson received her share of the estate she moved to the state of TN bringing said property along with her; that after a residence of several years in this state, she departed this life in the year 1821, and that Richard Anderson, her son, administered her estate at the June Term, 1821.  Her property amounted to $1428. The petitioners to recover their distributive share of $405.30.

It has some very good info in it.

Thanks again,

Ken

     Patrick,

There's still a few bugs, but that's OK, because I need to add something so it will make more sense.

Henry's 1817 will      1830/3 Wilson Co. Record  age in 1830

          Obediah Kirby          not mentioned                 ??

          Jeremiah Kirby         Jerry                        20-30

          Richard Kirby          Richard                       ?? Orpha

Hamlin           Orpha wife of John Hamlin    20-30

          Hezekiah Kirby         Kiah                         20-30

Mary Edith Anderson    Edy, decd.                prob. decd.

         Mary Kirby                    d. 1836 in Halifax            ??

     Should be:

Henry's 1817 will      1830/3 Wilson Co. Record  age in 1830

     Obediah Kirby          not mentioned                 ??

     Jeremiah Kirby         Jerry                        20-30

     Richard Kirby          Richard                       ??

Orpha Hamlin           Orpha wife of John Hamlin    20-30

     Hezekiah  Kirby        Kiah                         20-30

Mary Edith Anderson    Edy, decd.                prob. decd.

     Mary Kirby             d. 1836 in Halifax            ??

(from her will, 1 more daug.)

Sarah                  Sarah wife of John Ferguson  20-30

I think there were typos in Henry Kirby's will.

"Hezekiah; Sarah Orpha Hamlin; Mary Edith Anderson and Mary Kirby;"

       This should read: Hezekiah; Sarah Furgerson; Orpha Hamlin; Edith Anderson and Mary Kirby;

You're not going to have 2 daugs. in the same family named Mary & we know that Sarah Ferg. was a daug.. The 1st time I saw this will I knew something was wrong.

Also there is still some more staightening out to be done. Did Rich. have a younger daug. named Polly. I don't think so, since he already had a daug. named Mary. The dates all seem to come from a family Bible so kids wouldn't be left out. I think the Wilson Co. record has some problems. It reads now: "heirs and legal representatives of Orpha Anderson, Polly Kirby and MEADS ANDERSON, who were the children of RIchard Anderson, decd;"

I'll bet it's supposed to read: heirs and legal representatives of Orpha Anderson, Polly Kirby and MEADS ANDERSON, who

     was a child of RIchard Anderson, decd;

You might want to check your source on the above.

I'll bet Polly Kirby was a daug. of John son of Rich.. There were no daugs. named in his will, but it was wit. by Henry B. Kirby & sec. by

John Ferguson. This is probably the John Furgeson that md. Sarah Anderson, probably another daug., in Halifax on 7 Jan 1789 sur. John Anderson. Halifax is where John died.

Here's some other items I found on Rich's. kids.

37   v.   Esther Anderson, born January 27, 1749/50.  She married  Richard Kirby July 27, 1767.

38   vi.  Sarah Anderson, born January 23, 1751/52.

39   vii. Orpha Anderson, born September 21, 1758.  She married Joseph Kirby December 19, 1786. (it was John in Halifax not Joseph, could be daug. of John vs. Rich.)

Children of Richard Anderson and Jane Foster are:

          40   i.   Elizabeth7 Anderson.

41   ii.  William Anderson, born March 21, 1763; died in Kentucky.

42   iii. Thomas Anderson, born June 09, 1765.  He married Polly Halley. 5 Jan 1792 in Halifax , he may have d. 1812-17 in Pitts.

43   iv.  Jane Anderson, born October 1767.  She married James Turner. 27 Nov 1784 in Pitts.

44   v.   Francis Anderson, born November 1771; died in Kentucky He married Sally Motley. 24 Dec 1792 in Pitts.

45   vi.  Richard Anderson, born 1773.

46   vii. James Anderson, born November 22, 1777. may have d. in Pitts. 1812-17 (on Pitts. Gen Web)

Remember, we have to have enough descs. Of Rich. to warrent sending a man to SC & Ga. to find them. bob

Hello,

Not related to any andersons that im aware of but i am looking for any

information on  Capt. Paulding Anderson, my GGG_grandfather Daniel Hendrick

(First enlistment)Militia

Pension states that Daniel enlisted in 1776 and served 4 months as a

private in Captain Paulding Anderson's Company, Colonel William B. Giles

Virginia Regiment.

Any help in this matter is appreciated

Just checked the Anderson Genforum and the only thing close that i can find

I have a Paulin Anderson as Colonel of the first Battalion of Militia [of Amelia County?] during the Revolution. In April, 1789, he was tried at a court martial and acquitted of the charges brought against him (Calendar of Virginia State Papers and Other Manuscripts, 1785-1789, p. 593). My GGGGGGrandfather Moses Craddock was a member of the jury. Interestingly, Moses' daughter Jane Craddock married a Paulin Anderson, perhaps Col. Anderson's son? I look forward to hearing your take on all this.

Patrick,

Bumping into the Anderson line again from another angle. This time descendants of Richard Anderson and Jane Foster.

I noticed on some of your postings

THOMAS ANDERSON, b. June 09, 1765; m. POLLY HALLEY, December 26, 1791, Halifax County, Virginia2.

I've also noticed Clements genealogy that identifies at least some of their children as

Jane F. Anderson (married to Raleigh Stott Thompson)

Churchill Anderson (married to Elizabeth Thompson)

Banister Anderson (married to Rebecca W. Thompson)

    (Source: http://www.rootsweb.com/~vapittsy/Clementgen.html)

Do you have anything on this Jane F. Anderson who married Thompson?

I have second hand report of her marriage as 25-May-1818 in Amelia County. I am specifically looking for any children she may have had with Raleigh/Rawley Stott Thompson (1792-1842) in Pittsylvania County. I believe she may have had a child named Rebecca Thompson (1822-1861) who married James Fitzgerald Stone (1814-1854) in Pittsylvania County (abt 1838). Trying to confirm parents of this Rebecca Thompson.

I am seeking information on the brothers Churchwell and Beverly Anderson both of whom were born in or near Amelia Co., VA in the mid 1770's. Churchwell married Mary "Polly" Goode Apr 1800 in Amelia Co.,VA and moved first to King and Queen Co., VA then to either Obion Co., TN or Overton Co., TN where they died. Churchwell died abt 1837 in TN. It is my theory that my ancestor Edward Burwell Anderson, born Nov 2 1813 in King and Queen Co., VA and died Jan 21 1904 in Ouachita Co., AR was the son of either Churchwell or Beverly. Edward Burwell Anderson lists in the 1850 Fayette Co., TN Census. A Beverly Anderson born in the early 1800's in VA also lists in this Census. Can anyone help with this line.

Hello Pat

Thanks for your rapid response to the message I just posted yesterday re. Anne Pauline Anderson. Regretfully my information is scanty. So if the information you sent proves to be  about the same Anne Pauline Anderson, thats more than we had. If the Francis that you sent is married to Mary Weldon, than they would prove to be the parents of our Anne. Is there a marriage record of that? Any info on her birth and death dates? I have some info on Martha A Powell Booker, wills of Martha and that of her husband,Pinkethman Davis Booker, who were my gr gr grandparents.  Let me know what you think. Thanks again, Roger Huffman    rogph7@ccp.com

Don't know if there is a connection but my gr grandmother was Martha Ann Powell from Nottawy Co. Nottawy had been a Parish of Amelia Co. She was the daughter of William Powell and Ann Pauline Anderson. Martha was born in 1800, and in 1822 she married Pinkethman Davis Booker, My gr grandfather. They left Va. in 1837 and emigrated to Saline Co., Mo. I have been unable to find much on Martha's background. The above mentioned Ann Pauline Anderson is the daughter Francis Anderson and Mary Weldon. This particular "Francis" was the son of Richard Anderson, who was born about 1681 and died after 1767, according to our best information to date. But we would appreciate leads.

Martha and Pinkethman emigrated to Saline Co. Mo in 1837, spent the remainder of their lives there and are buried near the small community of Miami, Mo.

The petitioners to recover their distributive share of $405.30.

It has some very good info in it.

     Patrick,

There's still a few bugs, but that's OK, because I need to add something so it will make more sense.

Henry's 1817 will      1830/3 Wilson Co. Record  age in 1830

          Obediah Kirby          not mentioned                 ??

          Jeremiah Kirby         Jerry                        20-30

          Richard Kirby          Richard                       ?? Orpha

Hamlin           Orpha wife of John Hamlin    20-30

          Hezekiah Kirby         Kiah                         20-30

Mary Edith Anderson    Edy, decd.                prob. decd.

         Mary Kirby                    d. 1836 in Halifax            ??

     Should be:

Henry's 1817 will      1830/3 Wilson Co. Record  age in 1830

     Obediah Kirby          not mentioned                 ??

     Jeremiah Kirby         Jerry                        20-30

     Richard Kirby          Richard                       ??

Orpha Hamlin           Orpha wife of John Hamlin    20-30

     Hezekiah  Kirby        Kiah                         20-30

Mary Edith Anderson    Edy, decd.                prob. decd.

     Mary Kirby             d. 1836 in Halifax            ??

(from her will, 1 more daug.)

Sarah                  Sarah wife of John Ferguson  20-30

I think there were typos in Henry Kirby's will.

"Hezekiah; Sarah Orpha Hamlin; Mary Edith Anderson and Mary Kirby;"

       This should read: Hezekiah; Sarah Furgerson; Orpha Hamlin; Edith Anderson and Mary Kirby;

I'll bet it's supposed to read: heirs and legal representatives of Orpha Anderson, Polly Kirby and MEADS ANDERSON, who

     was a child of RIchard Anderson, decd;

Of Rich. to warrent sending a man to SC & Ga. to find them. bob

Hi Pat,

Happy Independence Day!

I wrote some time ago (several times, actually) about William Anderson Sr. And Jr.

In your first reply, you suggested that I look for  Meade Andersons` descendents.

I have found that my Wm. Sr. had the same land  address / ownership as Meade, and this info is listed in a published book.

My question: Is this enough to claim paternity?  There weren`t that many Andersons in Halifax Co. at the time of  Wm. Sr.`s birth, and I`ve narrowed  possible Dads to John and Meade.

Other documents that I have  are conclusive of everything except  the gap between Wm. Sr. and his parents.

Another question: Do you know if Mede and Meade Anderson are the same person?

I`m still curious to the middle names of both Wm.`s.  I cannot find ANYTHING  but 1st names.

Thanks for all your help, Patrick.

How would you feel about adding the proved names that I have to your site?

I don`t have the time or inclination to set up anything, and your site is the absolute best.

The Bible that I have also contains many names- some Virginia born.

Have a good weekend.

Emily Simmons

Yesterday, I was fortunate in finding Pat Anderson's,  "DESCENDANTS OF RICHARD ANDERSON" website after doing a "google" with some family member names.  I have been working on our family lines of VA for about a year and a half now.  Some lines have been very well documented, easy to prove.  However, I have been stumped on the lines closest to my mother; her KIRBY/FITZGERALD/WILKINS line!

My Mother's family is of Danville, Pittsylvania Co., VA.  Her Grandfather was Joseph Kirby WILKINS married Edna Alice JENNINGS.  His father was William Thomas WILKINS married to Clementine FITZGERALD (second wife; his first wife was Alice K. FITZGERALD, perhaps a sister or cousin; need to research).  Through Pittsylvania Co. marriage records, I have found Clementine's parents were, Leonard FITZGERALD and Sarah "Sally" KIRBY.

All through my search, I believed my GGrandfather's middle name of "KIRBY" had significance in tracing the family lineage.  The name "JOSEPH KIRBY" was passed down at least four generations.  Yet, when I asked why the "KIRBY" name had been passed down, no one knew the answer!

In the last month, I have been delighted to find that Sarah "Sally" KIRBY's father was JOSEPH KIRBY!  From marriage records, I had two "known" sisters, Judith KIRBY who married HARMAN MILLER, and MARY "POLLY" KIRBY who married JOHN BORRUM/BORUM.

Using a mix of those names, I found your website, "THE DESCENDANTS OF RICHARD ANDERSON".

On your website, I found the following:

"Will of Henry B. Kirby, recorded in same cty, Bk 11, p. 229, dtd 12-7-1817 mentions: sons, Obediah, Jeremiah and Richard Kirby; the heirs of daughter, Oprha Hamlin; son, Hezekiah; Sarah Orpha Hamlin; Mary Edith Anderson and Mary Kirby;  Joel, a son of Jeremiah Kirby; and grandson, Jams Kirby, son of Richard Kirby.

Richard Kirby married Esther Anderson, 3-6-1798, Halifax Co

Richard Kirby married Alice Anderson, 4-21-1791, Halifax Co

Jane Foster married Richard Anderson, 3-4-1761, Amelia Co., VA, Thomas Foster, bondsman

Jeremiah Kirby married Esther Anderson, 3-6-1798, Halifax Co. VA

John Ferguson married Sarah Anderson, 1-8-1789, Halifax Co., VA

Gregory Jarratt married S. Anderson ,11-5-1817, Halifax Co., VA

JOSEPH KIRBY married Orpha Anderson, 12-19-1786, Halifax Co.

The petitioners to recover their distributive share of $405.30."

(Christie's plea:  This gets quite confusing to me!  Could someone help me straighten how who belongs to whom?!!!)

I believe "HARMAN MILLER and his wife, JUDITH; LEONARD FITZGERALD and his wife, SALLY; JOHN BORRUM and his wife, POLLY" to be our family ancestors.  And from your research, I have deduced that

The "JOSEPH KIRBY married Orpha Anderson, 12-19-1786, Halifax Co." to be our ancestors as well.  However,

I have seen this marriage noted as "JOHN KIRBY married to ORPHA ANDERSON" on

Genealogy.com/forum.  And my question would be, did Joseph go also by the name of JOHN…or did someone make a mistake in deciphering "JOSEPH", writing "JOHN" instead? I have seen both Joseph and John being married to the same Orpha Anderson on the same day!????

At this point I believe the following (Please let me know if I need to make corrections.):

I. JOSEPH KIRBY married to ORPHA ANDERSON, daughter of RICHARD ANDERSON & unknown?

II. SARAH KIRBY married to LEONARD FITZGERALD, son of MATTHEW FITZGERALD

III. CLEMENTINE FITZGERALD married to WILLIAM THOMAS WILKINS, son of PERRYMAN WILKINS

I have a great many blanks in the ANDERSON/KIRBY lineage and would appreciate help sorting out the names found on your website.  I am not sure who the siblings would be in that mix of the above paragraph I copied above from your site! <g>!!  Would really appreciate help in sorting out siblings, cousins, Aunts, Uncles, Grandparents!  Am a bit confused by the many Orpha's, etc.!!

I would be glad to share my other lines, ADKINS/ATKINSON, ALFORD, BATES, HARDY, FLEMING, MCBEE, ROBERTSON, TARLETON, VARDRY, WALKER, WALL, WALTERS/WATERS, AND….BRIGHTWELL, HALEY, JENNINGS, MUSTAIN, POINDEXTER.

Associated lines are:  BOLLING, CARTER, DODSON, HAYMORE, LEWIS, RANDOLPH, PAYNE, PLEASANTS, SHELTON, STAMPS, TERRY, WOODSON.

Possibly clues from the other family lines could help create a larger historical picture of the ANDERSON/KIRBY/FITZGERALD/WILKINS/JENNINGS of Halifax Co./Pittsylvania Co., VA.

Most of all, I would just like to thank you for the countless hours, days, years of work you have put into your research! Thank you for sharing it online so that I could trace my family members!  I can't wait to tell our cousin, Joseph Kirby Wilkins of NC that we have found his namesake!  Thank you!

And to those of you with the KIRBY line, I could sure use your help!  I am in CA…. not near those great Virginian Resource Libraries!

Sincerely,

Christie Jeane Myers-Garrett

P.S.  Please note that I used the email addresses found on Pat's website, "Descendants of Richard Anderson".

This is a one-time mailing of all the addresses.  If you have genealogical information on my lines of the ANDERSON'S, KIRBY'S, FITZGERALD'S, CHURCHILL'S, etc., I would greatly appreciate your help/input! Otherwise, if you don't respond, I will know you are not interested and you won't have to write me an email telling me to take you off my list!  (Understand not wanting to get bogged down with unwanted emails!)  Please know that I look forward to corresponding with those who can enlighten me!!

Also, would you all happen to have an "ANDERSON/KIRBY" yahoo site for chatting, exchanging info!  From the email list above, it looks like that would be a great thing if it were not already taking place!
