This page is dedicated to my uncle Everett Anderson, a botanist and graduate of Marshall University. As a child Everett sat on the porch of his McLeansboro, Illinois home and listened to the tales of his Civil War ancestors. During a visit in 1973 he took me on a tour of the local cemeteries and family historical sites and told me that my ancestors had come from Virginia via Kentucky in the early 19th century. He introduced me to the study of genealogy. I have since had the opportunity to collect information tracing his family back to the earliest years of the Virginia Colonial settlement, but regrettably Everett passed away before much of it could be shared with him.

NEW STUFF

The notes collected herein represent the collection of Patrick Anderson.  Mr. Anderson was the list manager of the ANDERSON mailing list at ROOTSWEB.COM from 1994 to 2004 and had collected notes on Colonial Virginia Andersons from 1973 until 2004. Mr.Anderson has found it necessary to restrict his activities on the web as of 2004 but has hopes of rejoining the internet genealogy community after completing an upgrade of his computing facilities.

The notes here are providing as guidance to others researching Colonial Virginia Anderson families.  Mr. Anderson offers this collection of notes to the ROOTSWEB community which has been instrumental in assisting him in his genealogical research on many other families with the sole condition that ROOTSWEB continue to make them available to others for free.

Family Register Reports by Region in Virginia

Northern Virginia

At the end of the colonial period this region included the counties of Fairfax, Prince William, Loudoun, Fauquier, Culpeper, Berkeley, Frederick, Shenandoah, Hampshire, and Hardy  

By 1800 the region contained many Andersons some of whom had come from New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Delaware and Maryland into the area. I have found little published on Anderson families of Colonial Northern Virginia.

Northern Neck

At the end of the colonial period this region included the counties of Northumberland, Westmoreland, King George, and Stafford

Along the Rappahannock River

At the end of the colonial period this region included the counties of Mathews, Lancaster, Middlesex, Richmond, Essex, Caroline, Spotsylvania, Orange and Madison.

York River Watershed

At the end of the colonial period this region included the counties of Gloucester, King and Queen, King William, New Kent, Hanover, and Louisa.

On the Williamsburg Peninsula and North side of the James River

At the end of the colonial period this region included the counties of Elizabeth City, York, Warwick, James City, Charles City, Henrico, Goochland, Fluvanna, Albemarle, Amherst, and Richmond City and Williamsburg City.

South side of the James River

At the end of the colonial period this region included the counties of Princess Anne, Norfolk, Nansemond, Isle of Wight, Southampton, Surry, Sussex, Greensville, Prince George, Dinwiddie, Brunswick, Chesterfield, Amelia, Nottoway, Lunenburg, Mecklenburg, Powhatan, Cumberland, Prince Edward, Charlotte, Halifax, Buckingham, Campbell, Pittsylvania, Bedford, Franklin, Henry and Patrick.

Eastern Shore

At the end of the colonial period this region included the counties of Accomack and Northampton.

Central Virginia 

At the end of the colonial period this region included the counties of Augusta, Rockbridge, Rockingham, Botetourt, Bath and Pendleton.

South West Virginia

At the end of the colonial period this area included the counties of Montgomery, Wythe, Washington, Grayson, Russell and Lee.

Western Virginia

At the end of the colonial period this area included the counties of Ohio, Monongalia, Randolph, Harrison, Greenbrier, and Kanawha.

Kentucky in Virginia Records

At the end of the colonial period there was Fincastle county which comprised the area now Kentucky. And afterward additional patents of land in Kentucky continued to be filed in Virginia land offices.

Anderson in the VA 1810 Census

This is where I leave off trying to trace all the Anderson families of Colonial Virginia. My data base will contain a variety of incomplete information for family members in the 1800 - 1850 period depending on what others have shared with me.
