Jacob Hamman is probably the same Jacob HOWMAN who married Elizabeth MACK in Tuscarawas Co, Ohio on 2 May 1826, Milton Smith J.P. 6
------------------------------------------------------
1820 Census - Lawrence Township - Tuscarawas County, Ohio
Jacob Howman input shows:
2 Sons age 0 to 10
4 Daughters age 0 to 10
Father age 26 to 45 (Jacob would have been 35 years old)
Mother age 26 to 45 (Would indicate a birth for Mary Himes between 1775 to 1794)

Peter was born in 1818, therefore there were 5 additional children in the Jacob Howman/Mary Himes family in 1820.
------------------------------------------------------
1830 Census - Lawrence Township - Tuscarawas County, Ohio
Name spelled: Jacob Hammon...married to Elizabeth Mock in 1826
Household shows:
Sons: 2 under age 5 ...This would have been John D. (born 1827) and David L.
(born 1829)
2 age 10 to 15...Peter would have been age 12, other is same as other
son in 1820 census
Daughters: 1 age 5 to 10
2 age 10 to 15
...These could have been 3 of the same 4 daughters in 1820, one
from 1820 could have died or was married. Or 2 from the
1820 and an additional daughter born to Mary Himes between
1820 and 1825.
Father: Age 40 to 50 (Actually age 45)
Mother: Age 30 to 40 (Elizabeth born in 1801, therefore 29+)

1840 Census - Lawrence Township - Tuscarawas County, Ohio

Mother: age 40 to 50...Elizabeth was 39+

6 of the 7 children with Elizabeth are shown (Hannah is b 1842)
1 son age 10-15 is shown. This son apparently did not survive to move to Kosciusko Co or married and went out on his own prior to 1850.

This suggests that there were 7 children of the Jacob Hamman/Mary Himes marriage that either died between census periods or went out on there own. 4 daughters of Mary Himes born between 1810 and 1820 and one born between 1820 and 1825. 3 are in 1830 census, none in 1840 census. One son we know is Peter Hamman, born 1818. The other son could be Jacob Hamman. He married Mariah Pinkstock 12 Aug 1836 in Tuscarawas Co, OH. Based on the 1840 Tuscarawas Co Census, Jacob was probably born ca 1816/1817, Mariah b ca 1817 and a daughter is listed under 5. 3 Possible daughters have been identified:
Sarah Hamman m Jacob Ritter 19 May 1839 Tuscarawas Co, OH, based on 1850 census she was born ca 1822 and was probably the daughter aged 5 to 10 in the 1830 census.
Elizabeth Hammon m William Crooks 21 Dec 1826 Tuscarawas Co, OH.
Catherine Howman m Benjamin Guning 15 Jun 1826 Tuscarawas Co, OH. The J.P. that married Catherine was the same one that married Jacob Howman and Elizabeth Mock, Milton Smith. Both Catherine and Elizabeth would have been very young to marry. If born ca 1810/1811 they would have been 15 or 16. Another daughter candidate is another Elizabeth Hamman, who married John Ritter 26 Mar 1839. She may be a more likely candidate then the Elizabeth who married in 1826 just given the age. She could have been one of the daughters in the 1830 census aged 10 to 15. If this is true, then 2 other daughters are unaccounted for, one born between 1815 and 1820, who was in the 1830 census and on born between 1810 and 1820 who was in the 1820 census, but not the 1830 census.

"The earliest settlers on the military lots west of the river were John and William Fashbaugh, Jacob Howman, Peter Himes, William Hill, George Robinson and John Streaby. The two Fashbaughs were brothers, of German birth, and imigrated from Pennsylvania about 1810. They owned Lot 1. Both died in Lawrence Township, and their families are scattered. Jacob Howman, who came about the same time, afterward migrated to Kosciusko Co, Indiana. He settled on the east half of lot 11. William Hill was a resident of the township before 1809. He owned and occupied the west half of Lot 14. Peter Himes and John Streaby emigrated from Pennsylvania about 1812. The former became the owner of Lot 13, and the west half of 11, while thelatter settled on Lot 17. George Robinson came about 1815, settled on Lot 19, and remained in the township till his death. Conrad Zutavern, from Baden, Germany, came in 1819, and purchased Lot 28. he remained in the township until death, and his descendants are still here. John Mock came from Pennsylvania about 1815, and entered and located upon the southwest quarter of Section 14. In religious belief he was a Dunkard. He removed to Kosciusko Co, IN. George Mock, his brother, was also an early settler...Quite an emigration from lawrence Township to Kosciusko Co, Indiana, commenced about 1830, and has continued to the present time. Most of the township's surplus population has gone thither."

Many of the names noted above are intertwined in many of the families in Kosciusko Co. Jacob Hamman's first marriage was to Mary Himes, probably the daughter of his neighbor Peter Himes. They had a son, Peter Hamman. John Streaby was the ancestor of all of the many Strieby's in Kosciusko Co. The Fashbaughs of Koscicusko Co are descendants of Catherine Mock and Jacob Fashbaugh.

Elizabeth Mock is thought to be the daughter of John Mock (mentioned above) from a marriage prior to his with Elizabeth Smith. Unverified information states that Elizabeth and Polly were two daughters from this first marriage, possibly to an Indian maiden. John Mock and Elizabeth Smith had 10 children, some who moved with them to Kosciusko Co and 3 daugthers who stayed in Tuscarawas Co, OH with their husbands.

George Mock also had a daughter names Elizabeth, but this is Elizabeth Mock married Michael Fetters based on the probate records from George Mock's estate.

Jacob Hamman died with no will based on the following document found in his probate records: "I Thomas Woods Clerck of the Court of Common Pleas of Kosciusko County in the State of Indiana do hereby certify that administration of the personal property of Jacob Hamman deceased who died intestate is granted to Peter Hamman and John Hamman having qualified and given bond as such adminitrators are duly authorized to take upon themselves the administration of such estate according to law. Notery of Clerck and Seal of said Court this 25th dat of September 1858, Thomas Woods Clerk."

The parents shown for Jacob Hamman are based on a 1920's narrative by C.P. Hamman. To date, no definitive research has confirmed Jacob's ancestors.
