This was on a high point north of Big Barbee Lake, next to Road 400N in Kosciusko County, Indiana, USA. Big Barbee Lake was known for a time as Hammond Lake, after the common mispronunciation of Eli's last name. Eli had purchased several acres of land from Jule's brother John. Jule smoked a clay pipe through her front teeth and would quickly hide the pipe in her apron when someone came to call, according to a memory of Don Westlake. 15 | ||||||||||||
