General Notes:
Pp. 22-23, "Profiles, Tissius" by M. A. Schwalm. (An excellent biographical sketch.)
Frederick Tissius, born in Hanover, served in the 4th British Regiment of Foot, Company of Capt. Webster. Participated in the battles of Danbury, Brandywine, and Germantown. He was in the regular British Army, not in the Hessian Army. Deserted in 1787, and enlisted in the von Heer Corps of Light Dragoons at Reading, Pa. He was apparently at the Battles of Springfield and Yorktown and was discharged in 1783. He married Magdalene Hiestand, 3 June 1788, Shenandoah Co. and lived in present-day Page Co., which was formed from parts of Shenandoah and Rockingham Cos. as mentioned above. His second marriage was to Sarah Hunt. The profile states that there were no military records in either the British or American Army that indicates he served in a medical capacity. However, I have personally seen public Court Records, land deeds, I think, that referred to him as Dr. Tissius (Decious). I am not a descendant. My interest is mainly in that he married into my Hiestand Family. His children also married into some of my other families. I hope I have been of some help. Please let me know if I can be of further assistance. Joe (Joseph W. Baker)
Information for the Decious family was collected by Clarence William Decius of the "Cornelius Decious Branch". He states: "All of Fredericks sons left Virginia and went into Fairfield County Ohio, some went north into Ill and two came West, John Decious made it to Janesville Calif, he lies at rest in Susanville Calif...."
1780, March 15, Reading, PA. Enlisted in the Bartholomew Von Heer Provost Guard. Via Clarence Decius: Montgomery's "History of Berks Co. Pa. in the Revolution from 1774 to 1783", published 1894 and in the printed copy of PA. Archives 59, Vol III, pgs 919, 920, 925, 927.
[See von Heer's Light Dragoons and also Instructions to Captain Bartholemew Von Heer from George Washington]
According to M.A. Schwalm, of the Johannes Schwalm Historical Association: "...The von Heer Dragoon Guard--was a very elite horse company set up at the request of Washington and approved by Congress. Traditionally it is the beginning of the Military Police in the American Military Establishment... It now appears that von Heer's Dragoons may have indeed served as Washington's Bodyguard toward the end of the War."
