We played another Wests team, Wests Red at Kilbirnie Park today. This was a good exciting game, with the Hobbits coming out 14 tries to 11 winners. Some outstanding performances today, capped off by our youngest player scoring her first try! Well done Jasmine who also had a great tackle game to get the player of the award. Our captain today was Eli, and he played a great captains game. Eli consistently plays well, and today he scored a try and had some superb runs and tackles. Timote and Samuel carried on their good form to score 3 tries each with one of Timote's being a length of the field runaway. Luke's running game today got him 2 trries and was complemented by some excellent tackling. Nathan scored 1 try today with some super running and Lucy scored a try resulting from excellent support play, as did Zach who is playing excellent rugby both in attack and defence. Caiden was our other try scorer. Isaac and Ashad played very well today, both tackling and running well.
The team are improving all the time. Its great to be able to play again after our long run of cancellations. |

We travelled to Ian Galloway Park in Karori to play Wests Green. With just 7 available to play and some of them suffering with winter colds, we played in an exciting game resulting in a 10 tries each draw. Both teams tried hard to run the ball in the very muddy conditions (3 inches of mud over the entire field at the start -- and much worse by the end!). Stand out performences today by Zac who tackled and ran extremely well to get the most improved player award, and by Isaac who is developing a strong support role, always up with the ball carrier scoring an excellent try to get player of the day. Our captain Timote led by example and scored 2 tries, whilst Caidens strong running saw him gather 3 tries, including the 100th try of the season for the Hobbits! Lucy played her usual fully committed game and scored two tries, whilst Nathan overcame his winter ills to score two tries. Luke also played well in support and ran hard . |

Poneke versus Wainui annual junior tournament
We travelled to Wainui to play the Wainui under 6 team (a composite of 12 from their 4 teams) as part of this annual tournament. Each junior grade is represented, and the club whose team wins the most games takes home the Paul Hakaraia trophy for the year.
Our team today was captain Caiden, Samuel, Luke, Jasmine, Lucy, Ashad and Isaac. We played on a "boggy" Karaka Park mudpool.
With no game for 3 weeks the available Hobbits were ready for a game today. They played extremely well and obviously enjoyed the run. Lucy again being our standout tackler, while Jasmine ran hard from the kick offs to get the most improved player today. Our captain Caiden never stopped running, and was rewarded with two superb tries, whilst Luke and Isaac took every opportunity they got to get 3 tries each, both showed excellent support play and strong running to score their tries. Ashad ran fast and hard to set up a couple of tries, while our player of the day Samuel wasn't detered by the mud to score 6 tries. We won the game 14 tries to 11.
Afterwards there were player of the day presentations for each team, and Samuel was picked as our player for the day for this as well.
And the trophy ... its now back at Kilbirnie Park, with Poneke winning 4 games to Wainui's 3!

What a great game we had today. Everyone played really well today, and it was a very enjoyable game to watch. Todays game was very close, and featured some exciting running and really good support play. But the feature today was the excellent tackling. Caiden continued to show off his increasing skills to score 3 tries today and was our Player of the day whilst Lucys never give up attitude in the tackle and super ball running (another excellent try this time from good support play) got her the most improved player today, as well as a special award from the opposition.
Samual, Nathan and Luke were to the forefront of everything today and scored three tries each. Jasmine tackled and ran hard in her first half game and Eli was as always running and chasing hard. Ashad and Timote featured in some strong runs, each of them setting up a try for another player in the team.
An excellent game, well done Hobbits to win 13 tries to 11 after being down 7 tries to 6 at halftime.

Today we played Wests Yellow at Nairnville Park in Khandallah. Wests were a well organised fast running team who outran us in the second half to beat the Hobbits by 12 tries to 7. Tackling let us down today and the strong running Wests team took advantage of that. Player of the day was Nathan who scored two tries. Caiden got an award for most improved player and scored a try also. Lucy scored 2 tries again from strong runs while Eli and Timote scored a try each.

We were back at Kilbirnie today, playing the Newlands Lions. With both teams having 9 players and being a freezing cold day we played 9 a side. The team showed they are really getting to grips with the game now as they ran out 11 tries to 8 winners. Timote and Samual scored 3 tries each, with Nathan and player of the day Isaac getting 2 each. Lucy completed the try scoring with a super run to outpace the opposition. Tackling was very good today, and the team are starting to understand the concept of being behind the ball carrier to receive the pass.

We travelled to Newlands to play Newlands Blue. With this being Queens Birthday we had 4 players unavailable. On the day though, only 5 players (Luke, Timote, Zach, Nathan and Isaac) turned up. We played 5 against 7 and this was far and away the best performance of the season, despite our losing 11 tries to 9. Captain and player of the day Luke was rampart today, he scored 3 tries, but the features of his game were support, tackling and securing the loose ball. Nathan scored 5 tries and Timote scored 1. Everyone defended mightily, but in the end, we just ran out of tacklers.

Back at Kilbirnie against the Marist St Pats Typhoons. 4 exceptional examples of sportmanship by our team as we loaned the opposition 2 players in each half to make up the numbers (they only had 5 turn up) -- big thanks to Luke, Caiden, Samual and Alexander. Everyone got a full game today, and we ran out the winners by 13 tries to 8. Timote scored 4 tries and was a strong runner and tackler to get the player of the day award. Nathan and Eli scored 3, with Caiden getting 2 and Zac picking up 1. As the season progresses the team are working on the ball skills with passing and support becoming a strong team feature. Again, great tackling.

This was an "away" game for both teams, playing at Kelburn Park. We were playing another Marist team, the Tornadoes. It was cold miserable and wet, exactly the right conditions for under 6 rugby! We won the game 17 tries to 12 with Ashad, Nathan, Timote and Samual in rampant try scoring mood with 4 each, and Isaac picked up a try as well. Nathan was captain today and continued the Hobbits developing tradition of the captain leading by example. Player of the day Ashad is developing into a strong runner who hunts the ball, and it pays off as he uses his speed to score scores.

Again at home at Kilbirnie, against another Marist team (the Monsoons). The team stepped up another notch here as they ran around the opposition to a 13 tries to 9 victory. Captain Lucy got the player of the day with her strong running and tackling -- she is developing into a fearsome tackler. Tries today were scored by Lucy (3), Timote (3), Eli (2), Alexander (2), Caiden (1), Zac (1), Nathan (1).

The Hobbits had their first game, at Kilbirnie, against one of the 5 Marist St Pats teams in the competition (this week was the Hurricanes). Some awesome running by the Hobbits saw them win the game by 10 tries to 8. Hobbits who scored tries today were Samual who scored 6 (and it was his 6th birthday this week), Lucy, Timote, Ashad and Eli who scored one each. Todays captain Samual was player of the day. A feature of the game was the tackling by the Hobbits, who all showed that as the season progresses, they will be a force to be reckoned with.
