Antoine & Antoinette Balza
Quotes from Alice Lindstrom a Grand-Daughter
"Antoine had a brother that was a tailor. The brother had a twin who
died at birth. Antoinette was born March 10, 1845. This March 10th date
is the birthday of two of my grand-daughters, Linda and Nancy. Grandpa
was a fallen away Catholic but somehow they buried him from the church.
He had a thread-worn Bible and had many arguements with the priest over
his beliefs. He had a theory that the weather conditions from the north
were going south and we have been in a banana belt, winters as the snow
storms are much worse south of us. We have had much milder weather. He
also said that the day was coming when women would climb the highest mountain
to get a look at a man. I have found the place in the Bible (Isa 4 and
Isa 12-13) where women would beg a man to take more than one wife so they
would not be barren. With many women taking men's jobs, equal rights, vice-president,
etc. leads one to believe it is true.
The first child born to Grandpa and Garndma was John (Jean Baptiste)
who was born out of wedlock as Grandpa had to go into the service in Belgium
and never knew she was pregnant so they married when he came home from
the service. The date given was 1868 which may have some discrepancy in
the date given. This was a very bitter condition for Uncle John to accept.
He was a very active man and I had grown to love him as I visited him many
times as he had a very clear mind up to the time of his death at 96 years
when he died, August 8, 1964. His first wife was Anna Fischer Balza, an
only child. She died and he remarried to Ann Fuhrman who was cousin Ceil's
Godmother and had worked for them when Ceil was born."
