[154] Declaration of Intention - 31 May, 1913 - emigrated from Antwerp, Belgium August of 1880, to New York, vessel - Red Star Liner. Petition for Naturalization - 10 August, 1916
[155] Quotes form Alice Lindstrom:
[156] The first child born to Grandpa and Grandma was John who was born out of wedlock as Grandpa had to go into the service in Belgium and never knew she was pregnant so they married when he came home from the service. The date given was 1868 which may have some discrepancy in the date given. This was a very bitter condition for Uncle John to accept. He was a very active man and I had grown to love him as I visited him many times as he had a very clear mind up to the time of his death at 96 years when he died, August 8, 1964. His first wife was Anna Fischer Balza, an only child. She died and he remarried to Ann Fuhrman who was cousin Ceil's Godmother and had worked for them when Ceil was born.
[157] Uncle John's children were Florence (deceased), Ruth (deceased), Chet, Earl (deceased), Edward (one week old when he died), Clarence, Ceil, Jen, Margaret, and Gladys (deceased).
[158] Balza John 1872 - 1940 Married ANNA FISCHER 1868-1940 Florence-Ed Weisner Chester-Anna Dernbach Earl-Myrtle Photenauer Clarence-Amanda Panhke Cecila-Isadore Vandermuss Genevieve-Harvey Verheyden Margaret-Everet Ward Gladys-Earl King
[159] The John Balza family came from Germany(Belgium) and first settled in Dale, Wis. They lived in Luxemburg for several years before moving to Green Bay. Son Earl was the first editor and manager of the Luxemburg News for many years. In 1937 he took a position with Wheeler Cheese in Green Bay. John lived in the house now occupied by Herman's grocery on Main Street, he was a cigar maker. In 1915 he was awarded a $5.00 first prize for making the best cigar when he entered a competition with other manufacturers all over the United States for production of the best $30 cigar.
