[1252] Excerpt from the "History of O'Brien and Oceola Counties Iowa."
[1253] In this memoir of th elife of the late Nicholas Boor, who is now numbered with the honored dead, those who knew him best cannot help but recall his numerous kindly acts, his charitable and public- prirted deed. Coming to Oceola county in its early history, he became one of the worthy and honored men of the county and filled a large place in the life of the community in which he lived for so many years. For this reason it seems eminently fitting that this tribute be here recorded that coming generations may know the worth of such a man.
[1254] Nicholas Boor was born in August, 1845, in Prussia and died in Ashton, Oceola county, Iowa February 5, 1897. He came to this country with his parents when he was twelve years of age and settled in Kenosha county, Wisconsin. In 1871 he, together with two of his friends, John (Johann) Streit and William Schultz, came to Oceola county, Iowa, and homesteaded in section 4, Gilman township. After building a small house on this tract, Mr. Boor returned to Wisconsin, where he was married to Eva Streit, and in the spring of 1873 he came with his young wife to Oceola county, where they lived until his death. He resided on the farm which he homesteaded until 1881, when the family moved to Ashton, where Mr. Boor engaged in the lumber and grain business until his death. He was highly successful as a business man and was widely respected by everyone who had dealings with him. He took an active interest in public affairs and served nine years as supervisor of Oceola county. He always took an active part in the Republican party, and was considered one of the leaders in the county. He was a firm believer in the possibilities of land in Oceola county and invested heavily during his business career in Ashton. At the time of his death hea was the owner of twelve hundred acres of land in the county. His widow still owns four farms, aggregating seven hundred acres, besides the finest modern home in Ashton.
[1255] Nicholas Boor was married in 1872 to Eva Streit, who was born in Prussia on June 13, 1853. Her parents, Michael and Helena (Strout) Streit, left their native land and settled in Kenosha county, Wisconsin, in 1857. They came to Osceola county, Iowa, in the fall of 1873, the same year in which the Boor family permanently settled in the county. Mr. and Mrs. Nicholas Boor were the parents of ten children: Reinhold J., Mathias J., Katherine E., Helena M., John L. (deceased February 14, 1907), Charles S., Frederick T., Anna V., Anthony L. and Francis M. Renihold J. is married and has five children, Martin, Hilda, Vincent, Marie, Bertha, and resides in Ashton, this county; Mathias J. also lives in is Ashton, and he and his wife had two sons, Donald and Mark, the mother dying September 2, 1903; Katherine E. married Mr. Hubbard, of Rock Rapids, Iowa, and has five children, Eva, Helen, Marcella, Jack and Alice; Helena M. married Mr. Saweiler, of Lewiston, Montana, and has two children living, Paul and Helen; Charles S. Boor is living in Lewistown, Montana, while the other children are still living with their mother in Ashton.
[1256] The 1880 Census for Gilman Township, Osceola County, Iowa describes the Nicholas Boor family as follows: Boor Nicholas, White, Male, age 35, married, farmer, born in Prussia. Eva, White, Female, age 27, wife, married, born in Prussia. Reinold, White, Male, age 6, son, born in Iowa. Mathias, white, male, age 4, son, born in Iowa. Cathrine, white, female, age 3, daughter born in Iowa. Helena, white, female, age 5/12ths, daughter born in January in Iowa. Mathias, white, male, age 75, Father, Farmer, born in Prussia. Hess Henry, white, male, age 21, farmhand, born in Wisconsin and Michael Giver, white male, age 28, farmhand, born in Luxemburg.
[1257] Excerpt from "Our Lady of Perpetual Help"
[1258] Nicholas Boor came to Osceola County in the early years of its history. He played a large part in its development, as well as the development of Ashton, Our Lady of Perpetual Help Parish, and St. Joseph's School.
[1259] Nicholas was born in 1845 in Prussia and died in Asgton, Iowa February 5, 1897. He came to this country with his parents from Prussia, at the age of twelve and settled in Kenosha County, Wisconsin. He fought in the Civil War. In 1871 he, together with two friends, John Streit and William Schultz came to Osceola County and homesteaded in section 4 Gilman Township. At this time these men also helped build the railroad line from Siouz City to Minneapolis. After building a small house on this tract of land in the Spring of 1872, he returned to Wisconsin and married Eva Streit. They resided on the homestead until 1881 when the family moved to Ashton where Mr. Boor engaged in a grain and lumber business until his death. He was very active in public affairs; he served as supervisor for Osceola County for nine years.
[1260] His wife Eva Streit was born in Prussia, June 13, 1853. Her parents were Michael and Helena Strout Streit. They left their native land and settled in Kenosha County, Wisconsin in 1857. They came to Osceola County in the fall of 1873.
[1261] Mr. and Mrs. Nick Boor were the parents of ten children: Reinhold, Mathias, Katherine, Helena, John (deceased 1907), Charles, Frederick, Anna, Anthony and Francis.
[1262] Reinhold later married Kate Leinen. They had nine children: Martin, Hilda, Vincent, Norbert, Bernard, Marie, Bertha, Rosalie and Bernadette. Mathias had two sons, Donald and MArk. Kate (Hubbard) had six children: Helen, Eva, Marcella, Jack, Charles and Donald. Helena Osweiler had three children: Paul, Helen and Mark. Frank had one son John, Anthony had one daughter Eva Jane. Anna Miller had two daughters. CHarles who was a pharmacist in Lewistown, Montana for many years, had no children. John and Frederick never married.
[1263] The Nick Boor home in Ashton is the large house east of the Presbyterian Church. When Eva Boor left Ashton she sold her home to John Tremmel. For many years, this was the Ashton Nursing Home, operated by Mr. and Mrs. Cornie Verdoorn.
[1264] After leaving Ashton, Eva Boor resided for a short time in Minneapolis. From there she moved to Lewistown, Montana where she lived until her death in 1931. As long as she was able, she made a yearly trip back to Ashton. On one of her last visits she remarked, "I came here when there was nothing and helped build it into an progressive town, but now each time I come back there seems to be fewer businesses. At one time we had three doctors, and now you have only one."
[1265] When the church of Our Lady of Perpetual Help was built, Mrs. Eva Boor donated the high altar in memory of her deceased husband. When that church was torn down to make room for the new one, the plaque, the Last Supper on the front of the altar was given to her grandaughter Marie Boor.
