[28] Mary Ann Van Lanen was born on April 17th, 1896, in the town of Scott, just north of Green Bay, Wisconsin. The 9th child of Godfried Van Lanen, and Hannah Hermans. Christened at Holy Cross Parish, Bay Settlement, Wisconsin on the 18th of April, 1896. Sponsors were Albert and Anna Maria Hermans.

[30] Mary Ann attended school through the eight grade.
[31] Joyce Angst remembers that Mary Ann was a good mother. As a teen she didn't always think so but once she had her own children she realized that her Mom did her very best, and worked a very hard schedule with their big family. She remembers her baking a lot, she was a good wife, and had a hard childhood.
