[1268] Excerpt from "Our Lady Of Perpetual Help"
[1269] Reinhold Boor, the oldest son of Nicholas Boor and Eva Streit Boor was one of the first Catholic children to be born in Ashton, Iowa. He was baptized in the Sibley courthouse. He lived in Ashton or on the farm near Ashton during his entire life. He was in the Boor Coal and Lumber Business and later operated the Boor Hardware Store. He also operated the Ashton Electric Light Plant. In 1901 he married Katherine Leinen, better known as Kate. She taught in the rural schools of Osceola County for several years before her marriage. Both Kate Leinen and Reinhold Boor attended the Normal College at LeMars, which is now Westmar College. Kate first came to Iowa with her father Nick Leinen Sr. when she was ten years old. Her father came to purchase a farm where they later lived, east of Ashton. At that time Mr. Nicholas Boor invited Mr. Leinen and his daughter to be guests at his home. That was Kate's first encounter with the Boor family. Kate and Reinhold Boor had nine children: Matrin, Hilda, Vincent, Norbert, Bernard, Marie, Bertha, Rosalie and Bernadette. Norbert and Bernard died in infancy. Bertha died when she was a senior at St. Joseph's High School. Martin lived in Siouz City many years where he died. Vincent who was a contractor and built many homes in the Ashton and Sibley area, made his home in Sibley until his death in 1977. He had two sons, Tim and Gary. Gary now has the Boor Construction Company in Sibley.
[1270] Hilda married Joseph John Jackley in 1924. Both Hilda and her husband grew up and attended St. Joseph's School in Ashton. They had two children, a daughter Terry who now lives in Park Forest, Illinois, and a son Jack of White Plains, New York. Hilda now lives in Des Moines, Iowa. Rosalie married Hershel Kroger of Omaha. They had one daughter, Kathy, Rosalie lives in Branson, Missouri and her daughter lives in Blue Eye, Missouri.
[1271] Bernadette married Vincent Schiefen of Hawarden. She was an instructor in St. Joseph's School of Nursing in Siouz City. She received her degree in nursing from the same school. She had three childrenL Paula of Dallas, Texas; Raymond of Seminole, Florida and Jana of Sioux City.
[1272] Marie still lives in Ashton and at the present time is the Kindergarten teacher in St. Joseph's School and also the CCD coordinator for Our Lady of Perpetual Help Parish. For many years she was the Kindergarten teacher in the Ashton Public School. When Ashton consolidated with the Sheldon Community School, she taught there. After her retirement, she established the Kindergarten in St. Joseph's School, with the help of Father Al Loeffelholz. Marie received her Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Northern Iowa and her Masters Degree from the University of South Dakota.

[728] Sister Mary Imaculata
[729] Sister Mary Immaculatta
[730] Mary Van Lanen, daughter of Peter Van Lanen and Wilhelmina Johnson, was born November 29th at Bay Settlement. This was in 1851.
[731] After some years Mr. Van Lanen gave his farm to his son and having obtained from Father Daems the lease of a small piece of land, he built a two story frame house and moved there with his wife and daughter Mary. This house was east of the present parochial school and faced south. There were two sleeping rooms and a lving room on the first floor and three rooms on the second. It had a one story wing which was used as kitchen and this had a covered porch. Here they lived happily cultivating a small garden in summer and attending daily mass, until 1872, when Mrs. Van Lanen died.
[732] At this time the three Sisters - Christine, Pauline and Pius - were living at the rectory, teaching the parochial school, doing the housework and attending to the sick who came to Father Daems for advice or medicine.
[733] After the death of her mother, there was not much work to do at home, so Mary helped the Sisters especially with the laundry work.
[734] Not having been able to obtain Sisters after building his school, Father Daems at this time was planning a new Religious Congregation and Mary was anxious to join the new Community.
[735] On November seventh, 1874, she was recieved into the Third Order of St. Francis with permission to care for her father while he lived. She attended Mass daily, said prayers prescribed for the Third Order, taught the little Dutch childreen their prayers and catechism in their native tongue and helped at the rectory.
[736] Mr. Van Lanen died in 1881 leaving their home and a sum of money to his daughter. The house was moved across the road and west of the convent which had been built in 1880.
[737] Sister Mary now joined the little community retaining the use of one of the sleeping rooms in her former home.
[738] In the winter of 1882 she went with Sister Pauline to Notre Dame Convent, Milwaukee, to learn the art of making flowers from muslin. These flowers were much used at the time to decorate the altars of churches.
[739] In 1884 she made her vows for the first time, and renewed them each year at the time of retreat.
[740] In 1890 after an attack of the flu, she showed signs that her mind was becomming deranged. As there seemed no hope for her recovery the physician advised sending her to a hospital for the mentally ill.
[741] While at the Brown County Hospital she fell on the stairs and broke her hip. From that time she was confined to her bed.
[742] Sister Mary died on March 5th, 1921 at the age of seventy. She was brought home to ST. Francis convent chapel. Her funeral was held at Holy Cross Church. Her brother, Godfrey, and other relatives were present.
