[1128] Excerpt from "The Streit Family" by Georgiann Schend.

[1129] In 1871 Johann and his brother-in-law Nick Boor went to Gilman county, section 4 in Ashton, Iowa and homesteaded. They also worked on the railroad and helped to build the track from Minneapolis to Sioux City. Johann's parents jioned them in Ashton, Iowa in 1873. Johann donated five acres of land for the first Catholic Church and cemetery. The church was completed in 1881 and in 1885 the church was moved to Ashton, before this mass was held in the Streit home.

[1130] Excerpt from "The History of O'Brien and Osceola Coutnies, Iowa"

[1131] The Prussians have always been known as people of courage and tact; they refuse to be downed by ontoward circumstances, but push onward when once a course has been determined upon until the cooveted goal is reached. Innumerable instances of rare gifts in these lines might be mentioned, one of the best known in history occurring in the wars with Napoleon. Once he thought he had utterly crushed them, but a few days later they were routing his army at the great battle of Waterloo, joining the English at the proper crisis. Such people win in all walks of life, for they have not been trained to fail, or at least to admit defeat if they do not succeed. Thus we are not surprized that one of their number, John Streit, should come to so favored a county as Gilman township, Osceola county, Iowa, and become well established.

[1132] John(Johann) Streit, pioneer settler of Osceola county, Iowa, and one of the heros of the "grasshopper war," was born January 27, 1844, in Prussia, and is the son of Michael and Lena (Straut) Streit. His parents came to this country when he was thirteen years of age and first settled in Kenosha county, Wisconsin. In 1873 they came to Osceola county, Iowa, and homesteaded on section 4, Gilman township, where they lived for several years, then moved to Ashton, where their deaths occurred in 1900. Michael Streit served three years in the Prussian army which is required of all German citizens before he came to this country, and to him and his wife were born five children: Mrs Anna Singen, a widow living in Ashton, this county; John whose history is here presented; Mrs. Katie Shent (Schend) of Minnesota; Mrs. Eva Boor, of Ashton, and Andrew, a grain dealer in Ashton.

[1133] John Streit received his elementary education in the schools of his native land and when twenty-seven years of age left the parental home in Kenosha county, Wisconsin, and homesteaded on section 4, Gilman township, in Osceola county, Iowa. He erected a small house and he and Nick Boor broke thirty acres of this raw praire land in the spring of 1871, and planted their first crop. They had plenty of work to do from the beginning in the county, using all of his spare time in breaking land for his neighbors. In fact, for the first two years most of his revenue was derived from his services to his neighbors in the capacity of a plowman. He was one of a very few of these early settlers who raised a good crop during the grasshopper years and saved it from the ravages of those voracious insects. He prospered as a farmer in this county and gradually added to his original land holdings until he had three hundred and fifty acres in Gilman and Holman townships. In 1903 he retired from active farm life and moved to Ashton, where he is now living a retired life, surrounded by the comforts and conveniences of modern society.

[1134] Mr. Streit was married August 28, 1876 to Mary Becker, of Minnesota, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Ferdinand Becker. Mrs. Streit had come to Minnesota with her brothers, having been born in Prussia, December 8, 1853. Mr. and Mrs. Streit are the parents of seven children: Helena, who is still at home; Michael, who is living on the old homestead; Mrs. Anna Wabrich, of this county, who is the mother of two children, Regina and Gregaon; Nicholas, of Marshall, Minnesota; George, on the home farm, and Mary and Otto, who are still at home with their parents in Ashton.

[1135] Politically, Mr. Streit is a Staunch Democrat, but has never felt inclined to take an active part in political affairs. However, he has always been interested in the civic welfare of his community and has never refused to give his support to such measures as he felt would benefit the community. He was a young man at the openning of the Civil War and tried to enlist in the Unoin army in Wisconsin, but was refused on account of an injured wrist. Religously, he and members of his family are earnest and faithful members of the Catholic church, and give to it their earnest and zealous support at all times. He has been diector of the Farmer's Co-operative Insurance Company, of Osceola county, for the past seventeen years, and takes an active interest in this association. His career since coming to this county has been an open book, wherein his neighbors might see the record of his daily life. He has always so conducted himself that he has merited the esteem of all who know him, and for this reason is eminently entitled to representation in this volume.

[1136] The 1880 Census shows John Striet living in Gilman Township, Osceola, Iowa as follows: Streit John, white, male, age 34, married, farmer, born in Prussia. Mary A. Streit, white, female, age 26, wife, married, keeping house, born in Prussia. Lena, white, female, age 2, daughter, born in Iowa. Michael, white, Male, age 1, son, born in Iowa. George Becker, white, male age 27, boarder, single, farmer, born in Prussia.

[1138] Page 17:

[1139] In the year 1871 on the 9th of June, John Streit and Nick Boor came to look after their homesteads and to do some breaking of the land. The rest of the year they went to work on the railroad, which at that time was built through here to Le Mars. They remained at their work until late in the fall, when Nick Boor went back to his home in Wisconsin and John Streit left again for Fairbault, Minnesota. In the Spring of 1872 they came back to do the first sowing of the crops. That same year, Joseph Kappes came here with his family and built a little sod shanty in which they lived for several years.

[1140] The year 1873 brought a few more Catholic families. This was encouragement to the first families and after a few years of hard work they had carefully tended farms. But, the success was not to last, for in the year 1874 they were visited by the grasshopper scourge, and for two successive years their crops were totally destroyed. This greatly discouraged the settlers and therefore a number of them shook the dust of Osceola County from their shoes and went to seek their fortunes elsewhere.

[1141] After the grasshopper plague had ceased, new settlers continued to arrive until their number had increased to about twelve or fourteen families. At that time a few houses were built in Sibley and some Irish Catholics settled near there. Occasionally, Rev. M.C. Linihan from Sioux City, and Rev. John Smith from Emmetsburg came to look after the spiritual needs of the Catholics in Osceola County. About the yyear 1877 the Catholics of Sheldon built a church there and had a pastor named Rev. Lynch. He occasionally came to Sibley and said MAss in the Court House in order to give the Catholic settlers of Osceola County an opportunity to fulfill their religious duties. As was the case in the early days, Father Lynch's field of labor extended over four counties and consequently his visits to Sibley were limited and very irregular. Sometimes several months and even a year elapsed before he found an opportunity to say mass at Sibley. It was therefore, not unusual for the good father to disappoint the assembled congregation by his non-appearance. So, many children were several months or even a year old before they received the sacrament of Baptism.

[1142] In time the number of German Catholic settlers near Ashton had increased to twenty-six families, Now they frequently talked of building a church. On September 27, 1880, a meeting was held to determine the location of a church. Prior to this, Mass was offered in the home of John Streit.

[1143] The railroad company offered to donate 5 acres of land if the Catholics would build their church near the Ashton station. John Streit offered 5 acres of land 2 1/2 miles from the Ashotn station, yet nearer to the settlement of the Catholic families and for this reason the last offer was accepted. A collection was made, which amounted to $1213.00. This was sufficient to begin with. On October 10, 1880 work was begun on the 26 X 48 church which was erected at a cost of $1800.00. Michael Sellen commenced the woodwork during the winter of 1880 and completed it by March, 1881. The young congregation joyfully looked upon the result of their good will. This joy was greatly increased when Father P.J. Lynch came and celebrated mass for the first time in the new, but unplastered church on March 12, 1881. On this occasion they were happy to have him promise to visit them every three weeks. The next move was to have the church plastered and furnished with pews but on examining the pocketbooks it weas found that a general want of means existed, and therefore the plastering was postponed until May, 1882, when it was done by Wm. Sloan.

[1144] Father Lynch was succeeded by Father J.P. O'Reilly in 1882. Later that same year, Father T.J. Sullivan succeeded Father O'Reilly as pastor in Sheldon. Under Father Sullivan's care the congregation increased to 64 families, and at that same time, the growth of the town of Ashton made it desirable to move the church to a location within the town itself.

[1145] In 1885 they agreed tobuy a portion of the five acres offered by the railroad company. Lots 5,6,7 and 8 in block 16 were bought and the church was moved into town at a cost of $220.00. At the same time four acres of land were bought for cemetery purposes.

[1146] Page 218:

[1147] On January 27, 1844, John Streit was born in Irrdorf, Prussia, Germany, the eldest son of Michael and Helena Streit, he was followed by Anna (Mrs. Reinhauld Zensen), Cathrine (Mrs. John Schent), Eva (Mrs. Nick Boor) and Anton (father of Sue Niichel). He immigrated with his parents to Kenosha County, Wisconsin at the age of 13. In 1871, he and his brother-in-law, Nick Boor, came to Gilman County, Section Four, and started homesteads. His parents joined him in Iowa in 1873 and lived in and around Ashton until their deaths in 1900.

[1148] In 1876, he married Anna Marie Becker of Fairbault, Minnesota. They were the parents of seven children, Helena, Michael, Anna (Mrs. Matt Walrich, mother of George Walrich, Leo Walrich and Regina Walrich Voss), all who married in this area. Nicholas married Rose Walrich and had five children. Mary one of the two members of the first high school graduating class of 1905, George and Anthony, who married Mary Staudacher and had nine children. All remained in the Ashton area but Nicholas, who moved to Stacyville, Iowa and was engaged in farming there.

[1149] In 1880 the first church and cemetery was started on five acres of land donated by John Streit across the road from his home. It was completed in 1881. Prior to this time, mass was celebrated in the Streit home. In 1885, the church was relocated to Ashton, which waas more centrally located.

[1150] He retired to Ashton where he passeed away on December 3, 1918 at the age of 74. His wife passed away on March 23, 1922 at the age of 64.
