[1154] JOHN SCHEND AND KATHERINE STREIT
[1155] John Schend was born in Luxembourg, Germany on July 16th 1843. He left Luxembourg, Germany when he was 20 years old to avoid the draft in to the army in the year 1866. He had two brothers and one sister. John landed in the U.S.A. and found work in Chicago, IL. then left for Wisconsin and worked on a farm. He could not read or write the english language and he had trouble speaking english.
[1156] The 1870 census for Kenosha County, WI lists John Schend and family along with a John Strite(Streit) and Anthony Daniels living in the Town of Randall as follows:

[1158] John worked for wages of $1.00 per day and then he went to Ashton, Iowa where he homesteaded in Lyons County. Then he bought a 1/4 section of land (160 acres) in Osceola county. He married Katherine Streit. Katherine was born in Erdorf,Germany on January 2nd, 1848.
[1159] The couple had one girl, Katherine and five boys, Pete, Tony, Nick, Joe, and Mike were born to them in Ashton, Iowa. They sold the farm in Iowa and moved to Tintah, MN. There they bought 1/2 section - 1 1/2 miles east of Nashusa, MN. All the boys worked on the farm until later years when Tony, Nick, and Joe left and went out west to homestead in and around Harve, Montana.
[1160] John died in Tintah, MN on 21 Jan 1930. Katherine died in Tintah, MN on May 30th 1932.
