[1111] She rated a six inch headline!
[1112] Her wedding was on the front page of the Kossuth County Advance, with six inch headlines proclaiming, "Beauty Queen Wed."
[1113] Eva Smith still has a copy of that 1931 paper with the fake front page cooked up by her fellow workers at the Advance. She and popular Kossuth County Engineer H. M. Smith, known as "Smithy" or "Slim" were married quietly at Christmastime that year, catching everyone by surprise.
[1114] The Advance staff wasn't about to let the wedding of the paper's society editor go unnoticed - hence the spectacular front page.
[1115] That "Beauty Queen" celebrated her 90th birthday over the weekend with family members from around the area - and from as far away as Oklahoma. Her living room was filled with flowers Monday, reminders of the celebration.
[1116] Eva moved to Algona in 1916 with her family when her father, Antonne Streit, bought an elevator here. She graduated from Algona high school the following year and attended business school in Cedar Rapids. Returning to Algona, she joined the Kossuth County Advance staff where she did bookkeeping as well as handling the duties of society editor.
[1117] During World War II. Eva and her friend, the late Fran Herbest, were in charge of providing hand-knit sweaters for the Red Cross to distribute to soldiers. They distributed pounds and pounds of yarn throughout the county for women to make into sweaters. In one of the area towns, the women were notoriously poor knitters, and Eva laughed that they finally refused to provide them with any more yarn.
[1118] Widowed since 1967, Eva has maintained her many interests, keeping in close touch with nieces, nephews and cousins. A world traveller, she spends part of each winter in Florida.
[1119] Last August, Eva moved out of the house on College street which she and Smithy had moved into in 1946. Home in now a condominium over- looking Laing Middle School. "I love to watch all the activity over there," she noted. A sunny window in her TV room provides a bird's-eye view of the school youngsters coming and going.
[1120] Heading into her tenth decade doesn't faze this avid bridge player one bit. It's easy, even today, to see why her cohorts dubbed her a beauty queen more that half-a-century ago.
