[328] GUERNSEY COWS BUILT THIS HOME - The Martin Van Lanen Home, New Frankin, WI (in 1926)
[329] "Those cows" said Martin Van Lanen, route 3, pointing to his herd in the farm yard, "have built our new house."
[330] Mr. Van Lanen started to develop his present herd of high grade Guernseys in 1912 with the purchase of a purebred herd sire at the that time. After his old farm residence was destroyed by a fire in March 27, 1925, he started to build his new house and intends to put the finishing touches on the structure and yard before next spring.
[331] Mr. Van Lanen's herd now consists of 25 animals including 17 cows. He is milking 14 of the cows. For calf feed he is using 25 puonds of milk daily, and delivering 250 pounds to the cheese factory. At the peak of the flow, this herd produced 400 pounds of milk daily testing 4.5. In the herd are four cows that produce 370 pounds of butter, and the balance produce an average of 350 ounds of butter.
[332] Up to a short time ago, Mr. Van Lanen was a member of the New Franken cow testng association but lately he has become a member of the Outagamie county "mail order" cow testing association with headquarters in Appleton, Wis.
[333] The formula of Mr. Van Lanen's grain ration is 400 pounds of ground oats, 400 pounds of gorund barley, 200 pounds of a commercial feed and 50 pounds of mineral feed. His roughage is a mixture of alfalfa and red clover hay and corn silage.
[334] With the help that Mr. Van Lanen could assemble on his farm and that of his neighbors, he built his new house, working at odd times when there was a let up in other farm duties. The house is a frame structure on a concrete foundation, 26 feet by 32 feet, containing eight rooms and a sun porch. It is electric wired, supplied with running water, furnace heated, modern and convenient in every other way.
