[2465] The year 1776 is about as far back as the Van Laanen family history can be traced and the reason is very simple. It was not really until the time that Napoleon invaded the Netherlands and took over the government in the early 1800's that the common Dutchmen even had a last name. All of the baptismal records prior to that time record the first name of the baby with the father's name listed in Latin genitive. The Van Laanen family, in all probability, were simple peasants who from generation to generation continued to till the soil in the area somewhere between Volkel and Boekel. The area itself is very dull and flat and if one may be excused in saying it, so are the people. But all seem endowed with a spirit of simplicity and hard honest work.
[2466] Quite literally the name Van Laanen means "from the avenues" LAAN is the Dutch word meaning "avenue", as distinct from STRAAT which means street. To form a Dutch plural in the old days simply meant adding an "en" to LAAN i.e. LAANEN, so there are many old spellings of the name Van Laanen. In the writing of the official records this was often written with an "ai" instead of a double "a". Thus it is not uncommon to see the name written as Van Lainen or simply Lainen, and even in some cases Laenen. The modern Dutch spelling of the name would be exactly as we have it now: VAN LAANEN and sound like "fon lawnen" Since Napoleon's decree caught many by surprise there are a good many Dutch surnames that are simple or descriptive or define the place of origin of the family. Perhaps it was that the Van Laanen family simply lived by a large tree lined road called the Laan or avenue.
[2467] To continue the narrative: Stepping backward one more generation from Gerardus to Laurentius we come to Petrus Petri Van Laanen. There is some guess work involved here but with the small amount of names in the Church records and with the father of Laurentius definitely having the name "Peter" we are on fairly solid ground. The variation of name spellings will be explained later. Petrus married Catharina Vreijnse Lamers on November 25, 1776 and their first son was Laurentius born March 19, 1777. There is only a spread of four months, but sometimes that seems to be the case with first babies. There are possibly four other children to the family: Petrus(?) January 29, 1779, Henricus February 10, 1785, Joasnnes October 2, 1788, and Joanna Maria February 15, 1796.
[2468] Absolutely nothing is known about Petrus except that his father's name was the same, which had led to the famous Van Laanen saying: "that it all started with a Peter."
