[2220] Came to the USA in 1850. His father, mother and 5 brothers & sisters came over on the ship LEILA in 1847. John is not listed on the ship's manifest.
[2221] The note states that John Van Laanen (Sr)...to identify him from other children named John Van Laanen or John Van Lanen...is recorded as having come to America with his parents. (NOTE; John did not come with his parents on the ship Leila). John was born in 1836 and thus he was 15 when he came to this country. Later (after 1851) he met and married Domitel. John & Domitel had eleven (11) children.
[2222] John Van Laanen is buried in Holy Cross Cemetary, Bay Settlement.
[2223] ---JOHN VAN LAANEN FUNERAL AT BAY SETTLEMENT FRIDAY----heading of newspaper article which reads as follows: "Services for late Bay Settlement pioneer to take place at Holy Cross Church. ---(From Thursday's Daily)---. The funeral of John Van Laanen, whose death occurred at the home of son at Bay Settlement on Monday evening, will be held tomorrow morning from the Holy Cross church at Bay Settlement and the body will be interred at the Bay Settlement cemetary. The services will be conducted by Rev. Mickers.
[2224] Deceased was one of the pioneer settlers of the county. He was born in Holland (Nord Brabant province) on July 25, 1836. He came to this country and county with his parents in 1849 and has lived here ever since. He followed farming for about fifty-six years, having retired about three years ago.
[2225] He was married in the year 1861 to Miss Sophia Leyanois whose death occurred in 1907. He is the father of nine children, three daughters and six sons. Mrs John Van Ess of Bay Settlement, Mrs Mary Van Vegal of Bay Settlement and Mrs John Ver Baten of Wrightstown; Albert of Iron Mountain, Edward of Fond du Lac, John, George and Hugh of Bay Settlement and F J Van Laanen of this city. He is survived by fifty-five grandchildren and thirteen great grandchildren. Other relatives are located in Portland, Oregon, Little Chute and Stiles.
[2226] He has been a member of the Catholic Knights of Wisconsin for a good number of years and had many friends in this city and the surrounding country." (NOTE: John is not listed as a passenger on the ship Leila that brought his parents and siblings to the United States. He came to the USA in 185l at age 15.) Cause of death was old age and dropsy (heart failure).
[2227] Statement of intention to become a citizen. "STATE OF WISCONSIN, County of Brown: SS: Johann Van Laanen personally came before the subscriber, the Clerk of the Circuit Court of said County, being a Court of Record, and made an oath that he was born in Holland; that he emigrated to the United States, and landed at the Port of New York on or about the month of May in the year eighteen hundred and fifty; that it is his bona fide intention to become a citizen of the United States, and to forever renounce all allegiance and fidelity to any foreign Prince, Potentate, State or Sovereignty whatever, and particularly WILLIAM KING OF HOLLAND whereof he is a subject. s/JOHANNES VAN LAANEN. SUBSCRIBED AND SWORN TO, The first day of November A.D. 1852 s/E GUTHWAITE & JOHN SANDEF"
[2228] John Van Laanen Sr had at least one brother and one sister: Sister married Joston (?) and moved to Oregon and had a family. The brother married a woman who was part indian.
[2229] John Van Laanen, Scott Township, is a native of Holland. At the age of fifteen he came here with his parents in 1851. (NOTE: John did not come with his parents. The earliest Van Laanen's came to Bay Settlement was in 1848 so John could have come a few years earlier or a few years later than his parents) For the first ten years of his life here he followed farming through different parts of the State, where he acquired a knowledge of the people and language which has helped him so well in his after life.
[2230] In 1861 he married Miss Domitil Layianas who was born here.
[2231] He has 184 Acres of nice land. Mr and Mrs Van Laanen have six sons and two daughters. His father lives with them. His mother is buried in Wequiock Cemetary. He also had a brick yard just below the ledge on the back of the farm. Bricks were used to build the farm house that is there today.
[2232] JOHN VAN LAANEN, SR. SUCCOMBS TO DROPSY (NOTE: Heading of a newspaper article) Aged Resident of Brown County Passes Away at Advanced Age - Funeral Arrangements Incomplete.
[2233] The death of John Van Laanen, Sr., a well-known resident of Bay Settlement for the past fifty years, occurred last night at 9 o'clock at the home of his son, John, on the Benderville road. The cause of his death was dropsy. He had been ailing for the past six months.
[2234] He was the father of a large family and leaves a large number of grand-children and also great grand-children. As yet the funeral arrangements have not been made.
[2235] STATE OF WISCONSIN, County of Brown: SS Johann Van Laanen personally came before the subscriber, the Clerk of the Circuit Court of said County, being a Court of Record, and made oath that he was born in Holland on or about the year eighteen hundred and thirty (NOTE; thirty which is written in is crossed out with a line and twenty is written in next to it) twenty; that he emigrated to the United States, and landed at the Port of New York on or about the month of May in the year eighteen hundred and fifty; that it is bona fide his intention to become a Citizen of the United States, and to forever renounce all allegiance and fidelity to any foreign Prince, Potentate, State or Sovereignty whatever, and particularly to William King of Holland where of he is a subject. Subscribed and sworn to, the first of March 1852 s/E Guthwaite Clerk. (NOTE: We now know that John came to the United States one year before his parents who came in the year 1851.)
[2236] I have a narrative statement that says: "The ship's record of the LEILA": and shows the following: 1851...Gerard Van Laanen age 44 occupation farmer. Age 44 agrees with Gerardus Laurentii born Jan 28, 1807.
