[1011] (Jean) Martin and ()Therese (Bousmann) Duca came to the United States about 1869, as Milanie Duca Williams born in 1870 was one year old, but Hubert Duca, born May 4, 1868 was supposed to have been 8 months old when they came - the dates conflict. Very few records can be found on the Duca family. The tombstones where they are buried are worn off. I(Alice Lindstrom) remember Grandpa Duca's funeral which was about 1907 as I was small and they took Art and I to the funeral with them, but Grandpa Duca lived to be 96 and left 98 descendants at that time, but I don't know where to get the information. Cousin Martin Williams said Grandpa Duca was born in Gilly, Belgium and she had a sister Constance Bauvin Vandaele and I know they talked about Walen and Sue Walen and Uncle Theophile Duca told us at Dad's funeral that our family had originally lived in France, but that during the time of Napolean they were driven into Belgium. The original name is Ducat, but the "t" was dropped because of mix ups in their mail with the neighbors by the same name so they dropped the "t". Records would be under the original name and the latter name too.
[1012] We went by train from Green Bay to Luxumberg, WI, where Uncle Florian met us with the horse and buggy which was our first ride to my grandparents farm. In Luxumberg, was the first time I had met Uncle John's family. He had a cigar manufacturing business there and from there moved to Green Bay to work as custodian at the Telephone Office so in later years when I went to work there also I got to know him better and I thought an awful lot of him.
[1013] The Kermis that we were going to attend at Grandpa's was a three-day celebration in the fall of the year for the harvest. Usually different families had a September to October weekend to hold their Kermis. I think Grandpa's was the last week in September it was great as they baked Belgium Pies for the whole week before Kermis and we carried something like 300 pies to the basement shelves.
[1014] Belgium pie is made something like the Bohemian Collache, only ouors are made in pie tim size. The filling was dried apples or prunes with cottage cheese egg custard topping and baked. All that people ate who came to the open house was Belgium pie and coffee.
[1015] Their were many poeple who came and the children alone made a great gathering. At Rosiere dance halls the orchestras played day and night for three days. The first dance I saw during the Kermis was when the tango was in style and people were put off the floor for dancing so disgracefully. What a change the world has made in 70 years.
