[2455] Gerardus Laurentii (George) Van Laanen came to the United States in 1847, aboard the ship LEILA, with his wife Anna Maria VANDEN ELSEN and five of their six children. The sixth, John Adrianus (Johannes) came later in 1850. Gerardus was a farmer, the oldest son of Laurentis (van) Laenen and Petronella Areins. At the time of his marriage, as records show, he was in the Third Battalion of the Field Artillary, but his original occupation was a farmer. On the 20th of May 1840, Gerardus married Anna Maria Vanden Elsen who was the daughter of Adrianus Vanden Elsen and Elisabeth Gerardi HENDRICKS. It is interesting to note that Maria's father, Adrianus, made the trip to the USA on the LEILA. On the ship's record he is listed as being a carpenter of 73 years. There is also listed on Hendrikus Vanden Elsen with wife and 6 children. It is most probable that this man was a brother to Maria Van Laanen.

[2457] In the year of 1835, October 3rd at 4 p.m. we have in front of us, Mayor, Officer of the Citizen's Administration of the Municipality of Boekel, Province of Noord Brabant, and in the presence of Jacobus Van Gemert, profession labourer, 49 years old; Cornelius Dirk Van den Elsen, profession: farmer, 56 years old; Lambert Vanden Heuvel, profession: labourer, 38 years old, all living in Boekel, who also declared to be not akin to partners, appeared: Gerardus Van Laanen, Stukrijder in the 3rd Battalion, Field Artillery, a young man with the profession: farmer, 28 years ols, living in Boekel, Province of Noord Brabant, adult son of Laurentus Van Laanen and of Petrolnella Antonii Areins, masons living in Boekel, at one side -- and Anna Maria Van den Elsen, young daughter, profession: spinster (one who makes yarn from wool) 21 years old, adult daughter of Adriaan Daandel Van den Elsen, a carpenter, living in Boekel and of Elisabeth Geert Hendriks who died, on the other side, who have begged us to fulfill their planned marriage, to which having said yes we read, according to the Law, the papers as mentioned heree and brought by both parties: 1. Birth record of Gerardus van Laanen, bridgroom, which shows that he has been baptized 18th of January, 1807 at Boekel, Province of Noord Brabant. 2. Birth record of Anna Maria Van den Elsen, bride, which shows that she has been born on the 3rd of September, 1814 at Boekel, Province of Noord Brabant. 3. The Proclamation of Promise of Faith between the future marriage partners done so before the main door of the Village Hall, the first on Subday 6th of September 1835 and the second on next Sunday 13th of September, to which no prohibitions have reached.
[2458] In 1847 Gerardus Van Laanen set sail from Rotterdam, Holland with his wife (formerly Anna Maria Van den Elsen) and with five of his six children. The oldest of the six was Adrianus or John who was born 26 July 1826. John must have booked passage to the new world either previous to, or sometime after the arrival of the Van Laanens. The ship that the Van Laanens sailed on was the 613 ton sailing ship the LEILA.
