[180] ANTONNE BALZA FAMILY HISTORY
[181] EARLY LIFE:
[182] ANTONNE BALZA:
[183] Born in Sart-Walhain, Brabant Province, Belgium on the 13th of October 1845, to Jean Joseph Balza, and Virginie Bero.
[184] MARIE-ANTIONETTE FLAHAUT:
[185] Born one of six children, on the 19th of February 1845, in Sart-Walhain, Brabant, Belgium, the daughter of Pierre Joseph Flahaut and Julienne Adams.
[186] FAMILY HISTORY:
[187] Antoine and Antionette lived in Sart-Walhain and had a six children born in Sart-Walhain, Brabant Province, Belgium: Jean Baptiste born 24 January 1873; Julienne born 30 Jun 1869; Anne Marie (Mary) born 16 July 1870; Odile Julie Marie Ghislane born in 22 Jan, 1873; Virginie Marie born 20 September 1875; Theophile Antoine Joseph born 22 August 1878;
[188] In August of 1880, Antoine, and Antoinette and five of their children immigrated to the United States. They boarded a ship of the Red Star Line the "Belgenland" in Antwerp, Belgium traveling as steerage passengers, and arrived in New York on August 26th, 1880. The passenger list of the Belgenland lists the family as follows: Antoine Balza, age 35, farmer from Belguim; Antoinette Flabanz(Flauhaut), age 35, wife; J.B. (Jean Baptiste), age 11; (Anne) Marie, age 9; Adele (Odile), age 5; Virginia (Virginie), age 3; Theophile, age 2; also listed with the family is Victor Boro (Bero), age 40, Laborer. This is probably an uncle (brother of Antoine's mother)
[189] From New York, they probably travelled by rail to Green Bay, as rail service to Green Bay had been in operation since 18XX. Antoine and Antoinette established a residence in the town of Duval, Door County, Wisconsin. They raised their five european born children and had four more as follows: Elenore (Marie Eleanor Louise) born February 1881; Joseph J. born in March of 1883; Louis born in April of 1887; Julia born on 9 April 1889;
[190] Qutoes from Alice Lindstrom about Antoine & Antoinette Balza
[191] Antoine had a brother that was a tailor. The brother had a twin who died at birth.
[192] Antoinette was born March 10, 1845. This March 10th date is the birthday of two of my grand-daughters, Linda and Nancy.
[193] Grandpa was a fallen away Catholic but somehow they buried him from the chruch. He had a thread-worn Bible and had many arguements with the priest over his beliefs. He had a theory that the weather conditions from the north were going south and we have been in a banana belt, winters as the snow storms are much worse south of us. We ahve ahd much milder weather. He also said that the day was coming when women would climb the highest mountain to get a look at a man. I have found the place in the Bible (Isa 4 and Isa 12-13) where women would beg a man to take more than one wife so they would not be barren. With many women taking men's jobs, equal rights, vice-president, etc. leads one to believe it is ture.
[194] The first child born to Grandpa and Garndma was John who was born out of wedlock as Grandpa had to go into the service in Belgium and never knew she was pregnant so they married when he came home from the service. The date given was 1878 which may have some discrepancy in the date given. This was a very bitter condition for Uncle JOhn to accept. He was a very active man and I had grown to love him as I visited him many times as he had a very clear mind up to the time of his death at 96 years when he died, August 8, 1964. His first wife was Anna Fischer Balza, an only child. She died and he remarried to Ann Fuhrman who was cousin Ceil's Godmother and had worked for them when Ceil was born.
