[1227] In Army during WW-I, 472nd Engineer in the Panama Cannal Zone
[1228] 'Slim' Smith, 74, dies; Engineer 44 Years
[1229] H.M. Smith, 74 better known as "Slim", died suddenly Friday afternoon at the Veterans hospitall at Des Moines. He had an operation some 10 days before for a stomach problem, and was making a good recovery when he had a fatal stroke.
[1230] Funeral services for Mr. Smith will be held at 10 a.m. Monday morning (today) at St. Cecelia Catholic church, Msgr. P.P. Gearen will officiate and the burial will be in Calvary cemetery. The Hamilton Funeral home of Algona will be in charge of the arrangements.
[1231] Mr. Smith was born at Washta, Iowa 1893, son of Mr. and Mrs. William Smith. He was graduated from the local high school, and graduated from the university at Iowa City in 1917. He was married to Eva Streit Dec 26, 1931, who survives. A brother Clayton, died some for years ago.
[1232] He entered the university in 1911, but took time off in mid-course to work for two years for the Canadian Pacific railroada at Edmondton, Canada, in the railroad's push to thee west coast. He returned to the university and received his degree in engineering in 1917.
[1233] He went from college to a job as assistant county engineer in Kossuth county, and then into the army in World War I, spending most of a year and a half with the 472nd engineers in the Panama Canal zone.
[1234] During World War II when road building was at a stand still because of the war he took an engineering post on the Alcan highway in 1943 on the project built by Iowans on that roadway.
[1235] He was a member of the Soldiers Relief Commission for many years, resigning a couple of years ago when he was named to head the Kossuth Conservation board at its organization. He was a charter member and past president of the Algona Kiwanis club, and a member of the country Club.
[1236] He beacme a county engineer January 1, 1922, after serving for some time as an assistant to the engineer Dave Leffert. In 1962 a 40th aniversary party was held which was a surprize to him with members of the state highway commission, engineers, construction firm heads, and some state officials coming to honor him. The party was held at the country club with some 200 present.
[1237] An Uncommon Man
[1238] The death of H.M. Smith, better known as "Slim" last week was a real blow to the county as a whole. For more than 44 years hea had been the county engineer but in fact was more than that.
[1239] He was no believer in the 40-hour week and all the "enlightened" things that go into today's work. He believed when a job was to be done it was to be done, and that was all there was to it.
[1240] He didn't believe much in vacations either. The times he took off were for a few days, usually for hunting of allied sports. In fact it is difficult for anyone to recall when he really had what might be called a vacation.
[1241] His passion was roads, and he built well. While he was under some criticism because of high grades and lack of wide shoulders on the county roads, he stuck to his way, building more and better roads. The high grades were found to be excellent because of little snow deposit on the roadway and deep ditches in which to pile the snow that did fall.
[1242] His theory was the country roads were not super highways but were designed for convenience fo farmers to get to market. He wanted them open all the time - not just in fair weather. He was raised in the days when spring thaws, winter blizzards, and heavy rains marooned farmers for days.
[1243] He was a tough task master for contractors who built the roads, and he was a familiar sight, usually accompanied by a dog, in unannouced inspections where road building was in progress.
[1244] When the new courthouse was built he discovered some poor workmanship, and had it torn out immediately and rebuilt to specification.
[1245] He operated his office with only two helpers. He did not have a fancy desk. His work was at a drafting table. The trio in that office designed, profiled, made up specifications, and blueprinted the road plans.
[1246] With the supervisors of many years he also disavowed the "little kingdom" idea in which each supervisor had so much of a share of the money allocated to his district. This kind of business made wasteful piecemeal work. With the supervisors he built long streches of good roads, and now the county is criss-crossed with good black-topped roads.
[1247] His specifications were often more rigid than those of the state highway commission, and as a result the roads have lasted more than the usual time.
[1248] He was a modest man. He was a bit embarrassed when a surprize party was given him on his 40th year as county engineer. Perhaps secretly he was pleased, but he never let on about it.
[1249] His monument for most people will be his roads, and recently the little lake built by the county conservation commission which he headed. It would be well if the commission named the lake after him, for he was an uncommon man.
[1250] He was the friend of many, from the humblest to some of the great. On the wall of his office is an original cartoon by a friend, J.N. Darling, "Ding's" farwell to life, published after his death. It portaryed a closing door on Ding's workshop, with a "been nice knowing you" as a title.
[1251] It was nice knowing "Slim" too.
