[9] JOSEPH VALENTINE ANGST
[10] Joseph Valentine Angst was born on Valentines day February 14th, 1895 in the town of Polo, Hand County, South Dakota. The first son of John Angst, and Maria Jaeggle/Yaggle. He was baptized into the Catholic Church, on the 7th of July, 1895. Sponsors for the ceremony were Joseph and Veronica Bucher, records are maintained at St. Librous Church in Polo.
[11] In the early 1900s the Angst family left South Dakota and moved to Marshfield Wisconsin where Joseph's father was the custodian at the Blodget hotel, and later worked in a furniture factory in Sheboygan. At the age of 14, Joseph was employed in an excelsior plant. While working there, he smashed his thumb, and being under age for that type of work they moved him to work on mattresses and later to the hammock shop (the 1910 census states that at age 15 Joseph was living at home and employed in a hammock factory). Joseph left home at age 16 and found work in Sheboygan, Wisconsin where he took a job at Feeney's as an upholsterer. When Joseph took ill with an abscessed hip, his parents left there home in Marshfield and moved to Sheboygan to care for him. While at Feeney's Joe worked with Albert Van Lanen, and later Mary Ann Van Lanen, Al's sister, whom he would later marry.
[12] After his fathers death in 1916, Joseph left Sheboygan and moved to Green Bay, where he opened his own business "Green Bay Upholstery".
[13] EDUCATION:
[14] Anna (Angst) Kirchner (Joe's sister) recalls that Joseph attended school through the sixth grade in Marshfield, Wisconsin.
[15] JOSEPH VALLENTINE ANGST & MARY ANN VAN LANEN FAMILY HISTORY:
[16] Joseph Valentine Angst (27) and Mary Ann Van Lanen (26) were married on October 3rd, 1922 at St Boniface Catholic Church, Depere, Wisconsin. Witnesses for the ceremony were Albert and Mayme Van Lanen, Mary Ann's brother and sister-in-law. After their marriage the couple lived at 619 Grove Street, in Green Bay, Wisconsin. Joseph continued as the owner/manager of Green Bay Upholstering.
[17] On September 3rd 1923, the couple had their first child Alice Hannah, on September 15th, 1925 Grace Mary was born. In 1926 the family moved to a new residence at 1413 Day Street in Green Bay. The couples first son James Godfrey was born 28 June, 1927. On March 7th, 1929 Joyce Antionette was born. Roland came into the world on May 7th, 1930, John William Feb 5th, 1933; and Roger Valentine on September 22nd, 1936.
[18] Joseph owned an managed Green Bay Upholstery from 1921 until approximately 1960, when he retired turning the business over to his son's James, and John.
[19] On August 5th, 1965 Joseph Valentine, Mary Ann, and Joseph's sister Anna, were on vacation travelling through Canada. Just outside of Chatham, Ontario while negotiating a strip under construction their auto was hit head-on, when a trucker fell asleep at the wheel and crossed the center line. Joseph was killed immediately, while Mary Ann suffered bruises and contusions, Anna's left leg was broken. Mary Ann died May 6th, 1972 after suffering from a acute coronary occlusion.
[20] My FATHER AND I HAD A DISCUSSION ONE DAY: by Grace Balza
[21] and he said I was fortunate to graduate from high school and I said how is that? and hes said his parents took him out of school in fourth grade to work in a factory. He said school was more important for boys they needed to provide for a family. I looked into his eyes and saw he worried about four boys younger than I. Yes but, I said, girls need education too.
[22] My father and I had a discussion one day and he said we need war now and then for the economy and I was horrified because World War II was raging we had relatives in the Battle of the Bulge and in Southeast Asia and I know he never reported for duty in World War I. And I said how can you - you have sons who will be eligible for the draft and he said the depression was terrible.
[23] My fatrher and I had a discussion one day and he said I was too cross with my children show more love and I said if I did I'd lose control and then I remembered at fourteen his father had turned him out of the house with his clothes in a suitcase and five dollars and we talked about parents' anger at children sometimes with good reason but not always and parents' shame for over-reacting but unable or unwilling to admit wrong and we wept for youth and parents.
