[571] Elton R. "Mike" Van Schyndle

[572] Was born the only son of William Van Schyndle and Virginia Pigeon in Green Bay, WI on November 19th, 1921. "Mike" attended SS. Peter & Paul Catholic School and late St. Willibrods School. He attended Green Bay's East High School, where he met and started dating Alice Angst. After graduating from East High in 1941, Mike attended St. Norbert's College for one year, until enlisting in the Army Air Corps to be a pilot, navigator or bombadier. He "washed out" of training school and was assigned as a tail gunner in Italy.

[573] On a mission over Austria, his aircraft was shot and disabled. He recieved the "bail-out" message over the intercom and went to open the escape hatch. When he got to the escape hatch, another of the crew members (not wearing his headset) was standing on it and had not heard the "bail-out" instructions. Mike picked the airman up bodily as if he were as light as a feather, and proceeded to open the escape hatch and bail-out. His chute openned successfully however upon landing he broke his leg comming down in a dry river bed. Upon landing he was immediately surrounded by soldiers who much to his surprise and adhering to the Geneva Convention, protected him from some very irrate Austrian farmers brandishing pitch forks who were coming after him. After his capture he was hostipalized and for some time his leg healed. He was shipped by railroad to prison camp in Germany until he was liberated in 1945.

[574] Upon arrival back in the States, he was immedately awarded the Purple Heart and the Air Medal by President Eisnhower, and then discharged. He arranged an immediate marriage Alice Angst on July 14th, 1945, and the couple honeymooned in Florida at Government expense. At the time all returning Prisoners of War (POWs) were granted honeymoons.

[575] After their marriage, couple lived for a time in Madison, Wisconsin, where Mike attended college for one semester. Moving back to Green Bay, Mike joined his father in the family's plumbing business "Van Schyndle's Plumbing." Mike and his father built a plumbing shop on Willow Street, in Green Bay and worked together until his father's death, when Mike took over the business.

[576] After spending so much time in the POW camp on a near starvation diet. The Govenment warned all of the returning prisoners that they would probably be impotent for some time. However, such was not the case for this happy couple, and Howard their first son was born on April 24, 1946. Howard was followed by a progression of 6 more children Mary on May 4th, 1948; Christine May 27th, 1951; Craig January 17th, 1953; Mark July 3rd, 1954; Deborah September 8th, 1963; and an infant daughter who didn't survive.

[577] After the children were grown, Alice wworked full-time at the PLumbing shop assisting Mike, until the couple retired. Having started their married life in Florida the couple returned to Florida many times in their retirement until Mike's untimely death April 15th, 1999, in a Naples hospital on one such visit. Mike's Obituary is repeated below.
