[72] Theophile's letter of intent describes him as White, Light complexion, 5'8" in height, black hair, grey eyes, occupation blacksmith. Born in Sart-Walhain, he came to U.S aboard the vessel the "Belgenland" leaving Antwerp for New York and arriving on 26 Aug, 1880.
[73] THEOPHILE JOSEPH BALZA FAMILY HISTORY
[74] EARLY LIFE:
[75] THEOPHILE JOSEPH BALZA:
[76] Born April 28th, 1878 in Sart Walhain, Namur, Belgium the sixth child of Antoine Balza and Antoinette Flahaux(Flahaut). In 1881, at the age of two, Theophile immigrated with his family from Belgium to the town of Duval, Door County Wisconsin.
[77] In 1902 Theophile worked as a blacksmith in the town of Duval. On May 19th 1903, Theophile married Matilda Finendael, together they had six children: Henry Joseph, born June 17th,1904, William Joseph, born June 30th, 1909, George Anton, born December 17th, 1910, Goldie, born February 27th, 1913, Gordon, born May 14th, 1916, and Joseph, born December 23rd, 1917.
[78] On March 19th, 1914 they moved to the Finendael Farm in the town of Eaton, Wisconsin where Theophile farmed and worked as a blacksmith. Matilda died on December 23, 1917 in childbirth. Son Joseph died with her. Theophile and the children later moved to Hoiken's farm in the town of Humbolt on October 8th, 1919.
[79] MARY LOUISE LEURQUIN BONCHER:
[80] Born on April 28th, 1894 in the town of Humbolt, Brown County, Wisconsin, the second child (1st daughter) of Dieu Donne Leurquin, and Victoria Martin.
[81] At age 17, Mary Louise went for a bike ride with Joseph Massey, and became pregnant. Joseph married Mary Louise after their first son Frank was born in June 3rd, 1912. After their marriage they had two more sons Clarence, and Norbert Boncher (Boncher - after his Mother's Family).
[82] FAMILY HISTORY:
[83] Theophile Joseph Balza, and Mary Louise Massey(Boncher) Leurquin were married November 24th, 1920 in St. Mary's Church in Humbolt Wisconsin. The couple farmed and Theophile continued to work part- time as a blacksmith, helping neighbors by shoeing horses, sharpening plows (There was no welding equipment so the two plow pieces had to be heated and pounded together), made wagon wheels, and fixed and repaired wagons. Together the couple had three children: Donald Joseph - July 22nd, 1921; Gall Anton (Tony) - October 16th, 1922, and Firman Joseph - September 25th, 1923. On the farm, sugar beets were the best cash crop although peas were also grown. Barley, oats, corn and alfalfa were raised as feed for an average of 17 cattle. Sheep (20-25) were raised for wool. Pigs, chickens, geese, and cats were also raised.
[84] Unable to pay the mortgage they lost the farm in 1930. The mortgage money for the farm was owed to the Hoikens. The value of the farm had doubled because Theophile had added two new silos, a milkhouse, and fixed all the buildings. The Hoikens didn't want the mortgage money owned they just wanted the farm back because of its increased value.
[85] The family moved to Henry Vanden Busche's house across the road from the farm. Theophile started a Blacksmith shop in a building 1 1/2 miles away on County Trunk N near Rainbow Gardens. He walked the distance daily. Unable to collect bills owed, they moved to 1316 Smith Street in Green Bay, on March 16th 1933. The house was wired for electricity but they could not afford the cost to turn it on. Theophile made $15.00 a week working for the Work Projects Administration (WPA). Rent was $15.00 a month. An outhouse was replaced by a toilet after a year's stay. Neighbors had pigs in back of the house and there were lots of farms across the railroad tracks. Horses were kept in the city also. About 1936 or 37, Theophile worked for Harry Vanden Kelen building houses, then he worked for Frank Greenwood tending horses at the Brown County Fairgrounds. He also built a house trailer. He walked to and from the fairgrounds to his job (five miles one way).
[86] On August 29th 1939, moved to 1448 Harvey Street in Green Bay. Theophile Joseph died of emphysema in the Harvey Street house on May 21st 1941.
[87] Mary worked as a housekeeper and dishwasher to make ends meet after Theophile's death. Mary Louise died on October 28th, 1967, of a stroke.
[88] Alice Lindstrom remembers:
[89] A son, Theophile, was born in Liege and lived in New Frankin, WI. After his marriage to Melanie Finendael they lived on a farm and this marriage was blessed with six boys, Henry, Bill, George, Goldie, Gordon and Joseph. The mother died and Uncle Theophile remarried Mary Boncher who had three boys (Killian, Clarence and Norbert) and together, they had three more boys, so it was a case of your kids adn my kids fighting with our kids. It needless to say that when Henry married and his wife died of child-birth that both sides of the family wanted that little baby girl. The good Lord settled the disagreement and took the baby to rest with it's mother.
[90] Uncle Theophile died in 1941 and Aunt Mary (?).
