[3135] NAME/BIRTH/MARRIAGE/DEATH: Archdiocese of St. Paul Archives Baptism records; Diana Hone file (RAC BIR 006); lists Peter POSZ as sponsor for Henry Rachor & Anna's baby in 1861. (Anna Poss was a sponsor for Henry & Mary in 1860.) Sts. Peter & Paul Parish History; Diana Hone file (M HIST 006) lists Peter POSS as a founder of the Church along with Henry and Mary: Peter Poss b 7 May 1830 Germany, d 12 Oct 1883, Union Hill, 1860's Farmer. Cemetery Inscription says b 7 May 1830 (RAC DEA 022). (This is probably where the info for these parish histories comes from though. The Chr. date is probably more accurate.) UNION HILL is in LE SUEUR COUNTY per 1884 National Gazetteer. LaNaye Hennen 1/00 gedcom: From The Early Settlers of St. John's Parish at Union Hill in 1867 - Written by Victorin J. Ruhland Peter Poss came to the Union Hill area from Kenosha, Wishconsin in the early 1860's, it is believed. He married Katherin Tix about the same time. Not much is known about Peter before his arrival in Union Hill. Katherin came with her parents to this area around 1854. She had a brother (Bernard Tix) and a sister (Mrs. Leonard Rech) living nearby in 1867. The Poss farm was a half mile north of Union Hill. Here they had eleven children born to them. Peter's life was cut short by an accident in 1883 when he was only 43 years old. He was thrown from a wagon loaded with pumpkins and suffered a broken spine. The Poss family included Nicholas of Iowa; Jacob and Peter of Humboldt, Canada; Math of Union Hill; Mrs. Martin Pranke (Mary) of Prior Lake; Mrs. Susan Glenn and Mrs. Elizabeth Schaunus of Belle Plaine; Mrs. Katherine Haus of Calio, North Dakota; and Mrs. Anne Haus of Mantodor, North Dakota. Math was killed by lightening at the age of 18 on their farm in Union Hill. Another son, Bernard died as a young boy. Mrs. Katherin Poss married a second time. She had another son, John Hertz. John and his mother left for the Dakotas and later for Humboldt, Saskatchewan. He she died shortly after arriving and was buried at Humboldt. A peculiar coincidence in connection with the death of Peter Poss was the death of Mr. Newell of Belle Plaine, who was also thrown from a horse loaded with pumpkins. Both accidents happened on the same day from the same cause and both were interred from a Church of St. John the Evangelist. 1860 MN Census: No POSS or POST 1865 Minnesota State Census: No Peter Poss in all of Scott County. 1870 Scott Co MN Federal Census; Belle Plaine pg 42 taken 27 Jun 1870; Diana Hone file (MCEN 017); Peter Poss age 41 (=1829), farmer, born Rhine, parents both foreign born; wife Catherine age 27 born Rhine; son Jacob age 4 born MN; dau Mary age 2 born MN; son Bernhard age 6/12 born MN. 1875 Minnesota State Census; Belle Plaine, Scott County; SLFHL film #0565728; Diana Hone file (MCEN 019); Peter Poss age 45 (=1830) b Germany, parents b Germany; Kate 29, John 9, Mary 7 Elizabeth 3, Ann 1. 1880 Scott Co MN Federal Census; Belle Plaine pg 50 Dist 2 ED 115; IDSHL film #633; Diana Hone file (MCEN 017); Peter Post age 40 (=1840), farmer, born Prussia, parents born Prussia; wife Catherine age 35, born Prussia, parents born Prussia; Jack age 14 born Prussia; Marie age 12 born Prussia; Lizzie age 9 born Prussia; (?)Annie age 6 born MN; Susan age 5 born MN; Catherine age 3 born MN. ** Peter's age is wrong. He should be 49 or 50 depending on when the census was taken. Kids could not have been born in Prussia as Peter was in Belle Plaine to sponsor Henry & Anna's child in 1861. 1885 Minnesota State Census; Belle Plaine, Scott Co; SLFHL film #0565754; Diana Hone file (MCEN 020); Peter is not listed with family. He died in 1883. NOT ON IGI, Jan 2000 NONE of his children are on IGI either, but wife Catherine is.
