[555] Alice Lindstrom remebers:
[556] Uncle Joe was born in Duval, WI. The first (child born) in this country. It's a small settlement between Luxumberg and Brussels near Sturgeon Bay. Their farm was near the Little Catholic church at Duval. He married Clara and she preceded him in death. Uncle JOe died September 1, 1972. They never had any childrenso the estate was divided between 70 heirs and being a niece I received $850.00.
[557] Uncle Joe and Aunt Clara left an endowment to the little Catholic church at Duval and had new tombstones put on Grandma and Grandpa Balza's graves. On their own graves were full length brown granite slabs and tombstones to match. They also had new stones put on Aunt Clara's parents graves, a fund for perpetual care of the graves. At the trial to settle the estate, the fund for perpetual care was discussed and the $2000.00 that had been appropriated for it was lowered as the interest would have grown in years far beyond the need for care. The fund for the church rail was changed and to be used for a paint job for the outside which they needed badly. The codicils that had been added after the death of Aunt Clara were thrown out as they had a joint will which couldn't be changed. Aunt Clara's relative that were there quarreled over the amounts they thought they should receive, but in a recess I was talking to the lawyer and I wondered why they were so divided against each other, really, we had the right of survival as Uncle Joe had outlived his wife. The lawyer agreed with me and in the end we did get more then the other relatives on Aunt Clara's side of the family. What good is a will if it isn't carried out the way you want it to be.

[395] Alice Lindstrom remembers: We originally came from a Catholic background but a priest refused to bury a baby that was still born in Dad's family and they left the church. Catholics believe you are born into this world with a sin on your soul and it must be cleased by Baptism. All the boys in Dad's family married Catholic girls who had to turn for them. There is only one of Dad's sisters who departed from the rest and that was Aunt Theresa Van Laanen.
