Hendrick (Henry, Drick) VAN LANEN was the seventh child born to Gerardus VAN LANEN and Johanna VAN DER HEIJDEN. he was born in Boekel, Noord Brabant, Holland, on August 21st, 1829.
Hendrick's first wife has yet to be identified, he did, however, father two children with her. The first was Anna Mary born in Boekel, Noord Brabant, Holland in 1842. the second was Anthony born in Boekel, Noord Brabant, Holland in 1850.
In 1849 Hendrick and his family (Gerardus, Johanna and five of their children Mary, Ariton, Bernard , Antonette and Hendrick) immigrated to the United States. Hendrick's daughters are not found in this group and may have come to the United States later on. The first time we find them with their father is in the 1860 census as follows:
- Henry Van Lanen, age 31, born in Holland
- Anna, age 18 born in Holland
- Anthony, age 10, born in Holland
His second wife was Helena VERBAKEL was born on Decemebr 18th, 1838 in Boekel, Holland. The daughter of ? VERBAKEL and Petronella KLINK.
Helena and Herndrick were married sometime after1860, and before 1867, when their first child was born. It's not clear as to exactly when or where Hendrick and Helena were married at this time. The 1880 census lists their first daughter Mary as "born in Holland" while the remaining children were born in Wisconsin. It's possible that Helena was watching over Hendrick's daughters in Holland and that he returned to get them and marry her after the death of his first wife. Together they had five children all born in the town of Scott, Brown County, Wisconsin:
- Mary born in 1867 (possibly in Holland)
- Wilhelmina (Minnie, Nellia) born in 1869 in Wisconsin. She married Willie ZEUTZIUS in 1904.
- Bernard born in 1873
- Hannah born in 1875, and
- Henry born in 1878.
The 1880 census lists the family as follows:
- Henry Van Lanen, age 51, Farmer, born in Holland
- Hellena, age 42, Wife, born in Holland
- Mary, age 13, in school, born in Holland
- Nellia, age 11, in school, born in WI
- Bernard, age 7, born in WI
- Hannah, age 3, born in WI
- Henry, age 2, born in WI.
Hendrick died on April 9th, 1920 and is buried in Bay Settlement Cemetery. Helena died soon after on November 11, 1920.

The VAN LANEN surname originates in the towns of Boekel and
Uden, Noord Brabant, Holland and means "from the
lanes". The earliest Van Lanen identified to date is Peter VAN LAANEN who was
married to Wilhelmina VAN DEN
ANKER. This couple had at least one son Gerardus VAN LANEN (1788 -
<1870) who married Johanna
Adriaan Giele VAN DER HEIJDEN (1790 - <1870).
Gerardus and Johanna had seven children (Gerardus Van Lanen Family
History). Their seventh child was Hendrick (Henry, Drick) VAN LANEN
who married first ? and later married Helena VERBAKEL. This
family is described above.
VAN DER HEIJDEN Ancestry
The VAN DER HEIJDEN surname originates in Holland, and is the
subject of on-going research. At present the oldest known Vander
Heijden is Adriaan VANDER HEIJDEN (?) who married Anna Maria
PETERS (?). They had at least one daughter Johanna Adriaan Giele VAN DER
HEIJDEN (1790 - <1870) who married Gerardus VAN LANEN (1788 -
<1870). Gerardus and Johanna had seven children (Gerardus Van Lanen Family
History). Their ?son was ? married ?. this couple is
described above.
