The Van Order Family Web Page

Welcome to the Van Order Family Web Page
For a number of years I have been trying to track members of several Van
Order households that first appear in the Federal 1810 and 1820 census in
Ulysses Township in the Finger Lakes region of New York State. Some were
farmer
and others boatman.
I have put every bit of information I could find on the Van Orders in a
computerized genealogy program. It is probable that we have corresponded by
e-mail with individual messages and that you have helped
contribute to this
database.
It often occurred to me, as these note were being written and information
passed, that there were probably others out there who would be interested in
what was being learned.

First, a bit of background. The first record I have of the VAN ORDER variant
is a handwritten transcription of the 1809 Tax Assessment Roll for Ulysses
Township, Seneca County, NY. I have not been able to
locate the original
document from which the transcript was made. The 1810 Federal Census for
Ulysses Township, still in Seneca County until 1817, shows four VAN ORDER
households; headed by a James, Henry, David and Peter. The
Peter line has
been extensively researched by Enid Eleanor Adams a Fellow, American Society
of Genealogists and a Certified Genealogist. This was her line. Enid is now
deceased, but a great deal of her research can be found in
LDS film #
1421771, item 13 "Dutch families including Van Orden, Quackenbush, and
Brinkerhoff." It consists of many pages of correspondence with George Olin
Zabriskie (1904-1988), himself a very noted genealogists. The
VAN
ORDEN/ZABRISKIE lines connect with Christyntje Zabriskie b. March 1708/09 in
Hackensack, Bergen, New Jersey and married Jacobus James Van Norden, b.
January 1705/06 (source: Page 52 of "NOTES FROM YOUR COMPILER" by Maile G. V.
HO).
Enid's Peter is your Peter Van ORDEN who married Effie (Eva) Smith.
Apparently the VAN ORDER or VANORDER variant was used after these four
households migrated to Ulysses. The taxables for Saddle River, and later
Pompton have all
three variants VAN NORDEN/VAN ORDERN/VAN ORDER. The early
Grantor/Grantees (1824-1858) Index for Ulysses lists 5 Van Orden transactions
and 79 Vanorder ones. Peter and Effie were the last generation to use the VAN
ORDEN form. From
Ulysses, many of the VAN ORDERs migrated westward to
Illinois and on to California.
I have recently set up a VANORDER List that will allow all
that are interested to subscribe and receive information. It is described
below:
"VANORDER. A mailing list for the discussion and sharing of
information
regarding the
Van Order surname and variations (VanOrder/Vanorder/VanOrden/Vanorden/Van
Orden/VanNorden/Vannorden/Van Norden/VanOrde/Vanorde/Van Orde) in any place
and at any time. You must be a subscriber to post to the
list. To subscribe
send the word "subscribe" (without the quotes) as the only text in the body
of a message to
vanorder-l-request@rootsweb.com (mail mode) or
vanorder-d-request@rootsweb.com (digest mode)."
The list will be linked to several of the most prominent genealogy sites.
This way we'll get advertising for our list and others will
join.
I expect the amount of messages to be small, at least at first. One of my
duties as Administrator for the list is to see that members do not receive
unwanted and unrelated mail (SPAM). Members can
"unsubscribe" at any time
and your delete button is always there.
If you share this interest and would like to be included, please subscribe
and pass this information along to others. If you do subscribe, you will be
sent
a message giving you more detailed information on how to use the list.
Please note that the e-mail address used to post notes and messages is
different from the one used to subscribe to the list.
Looking forward to hearing from
you!
