Not much is known about James.
He was born on 9 May 18261 in Illinois,2 the fourth son and ninth child of Jesse BARTLETT and Frances CALLAWAY. Most likely he is named for two of his mother's brothers, James Marshall CALLAWAY (1790-1865) and John Farrar CALLAWAY (1773-1848).
He was five years old when the family arrived in Texas from Illinois in late 1831.3
He died on 14 January 1846 at age 19.4
1. Holy Bible (Philadelphia,
Pa.: M. Carey & Son, 1817), p. 678 (spelling his middle name as Farrer). This bible
was originally owned by Jesse Bartlett and Frances Callaway Bartlett and was in the
possession of Ruby Lynn Shelton, Rice, Tex., in 1974. On the flyleaf, believed to be in
Jesse's hand, is "Jesse Bartlett his Book."
